Competency Quarter 1

Week 7
Knowledge : Identify the major layers of the Earth.
Learning
Skills : Draw and label the Earth’s cross section.
Objectives
Attitudes : Give the importance of studying the Earth’s interior. Day 1
Duration
Topic: The Composition of the Earth’s Interior

Resources Science 10 LM, any coloring materials, long size bond paper, ruler and pencil
Needed

PROCEDURE:
Element of
the Plan
The Earth’s composition tells a story about itself. It gives us clues to its past and
Awareness proofs about the gradual and slow changes that it has undergone for over 4.6 billion
years.
Activity Draw and label the Earth’s cross section, refer to page 48 Figure 4, Science 10 LM.
Give the characteristics of each layer.
What are the major layers of the Earth?
Analysis
Compare the crust, mantle and core in terms of thickness in kilometers.
The crust is the thinnest and the outermost layer of the Earth that extends from the
Abstraction surface to about 32 kilometers below. The mantle is middle layer of the earth. It makes
up about 80% of the Earth’s total volume and about 68% of its total mass. The core
is subdivided into two layers: the inner and the outer core. The outer core is 2900
kilometers below the Earth’s surface that is mainly made up of iron and nickel moving
around the solid inner core, creating Earth’s Magnetism while the inner core is made
up of solid iron and nickel and has a radius of 1300 kilometers.
Application Why there is a need to study the Earth’s layers?
The assessment is based on the activity performed. Students rated based on the
following:
Assessment A. Concept (Based on the instruction given) – 15 points
B. Legibility – 5 points
C. Visual appeal – 5 points
