Egy ifjúsági magazinban találtam a címedet. Azt írtad, hogy egy olyan korú lánnyal sze-
retnél levelezni, mint én.
Nos, hadd írjak néhány szót magamról. Tizenöt éves vagyok és egy budapesti gimnázium-
ba járok. Öt éve tanulok angolul és mindig is szerettem volna egy olyasvalakivel levelezni,
aki Nagy-Britanniában, vagy az Egyesült Államokban lakik, de eddig nem beszéltem va-
lami jól angolul.
Koromhoz képest meglehetősen magas vagyok: 170 cm, a súlyom pedig 57 kg. Barna sze-
mem van és hosszú barna hajam. Mellékelek egy fényképet a családunkról: az apukámról,
anyukámról, az öcsémről és a kutyánkról, Jessie-ről. Megtaláltál engem? Pont középen
állok.
Az édesapám egy bankban dolgozik, az édesanyám pedig általános iskolai tanár. Csak
egy testvérem van, aki két évvel fiatalabb nálam. Most járja az általános iskola hatodik
osztályát. A család központja a kutya. Mindenki imádja. Nektek is van valamilyen házi-
állatotok?
Szabadidőmben én szalvétákat gyűjtök és nagyon örülnék, ha tudnál nekem néhányat
küldeni Nagy-Britanniából. Ha érdekel, én is küldök neked párat Magyarországról. Vagy

Dear Gillian,
I found your address in a youth magazine. You said that you would like to correspond
with a girl of my age.
Let me introduce myself. I am fifteen years old and I am a grammar school student
in Budapest. I have been studying English for five years and I have always wanted to
correspond with someone from Great Britain or the U.S.A., but so far my English hasn’t
been very good.
I’m quite tall for my age, 5ft 8ins, and I weigh 125 lbs. I have brown eyes and long brown
hair. I’m enclosing a photograph of our family; my father, my mother, my brother and
our dog, Jessie. Can you see me? I’m standing right in the middle.

My father is a bank clerk and my mother is a primary school teacher. I only have one
brother, who is two years younger than me. He is in the sixth year of primary school. The
dog is the centre of the family, everybody adores her. Have you got any pets at home?

In my free time I collect serviettes and I would be very glad if you could send me some
from Britain. If you are interested I will send you some Hungarian ones. Or could I send

Kedves David!
El sem tudom mondani, hogy mennyire örültem, amikor megkaptam a leveledet. Na-
gyon kedves volt tőled, hogy ilyen gyorsan válaszoltál. Örömmel olvastam rólad, a csalá-
dodról és a kedvenc időtöltésedről.
Én is szívesen levelezek korombeli diákokkal a világ különböző tájairól. Így sokat meg-
tudhatok a hazájukról és az életvitelükről. Mindez nemcsak élvezetes, de hasznos is, mert
időközben fejleszthetem az angol tudásom.
Olvasni és internetezni is szeretek a szabadidőmben. Imádom a szépirodalmat és sok ver-
set olvasok. Kedvencem Pilinszky J., akinek rövid, 8-10 soros versei különösen tetszenek.

Te milyen könyveket szeretsz olvasni a szabad idődben? Kinek a könyveit kedveled külö-
nösen? Van kedvenc zenekarod, vagy zenedarabod?
Ami engem illet, én nem különösebben vagyok oda a zenéért, bár négy évig tanultam
hegedülni. Manapság leginkább csak könnyű pop zenét hallgatok. Jelenleg van néhány
kedvenc zenekarom, de ez mindig változik. Most éppen a Guns and Roses és Lady Gaga
dalait szeretem. Ha netalán a kezedbe akadna róluk néhány fénykép légy szíves küldd el
őket. Nagyon hálás lennék.
Maradék szabad időmet szívesen töltöm társaságban, eljárok otthonról és jól érzem ma-
gam. Egészen sok barátom van, aminek nagyon örülök. Azt hiszem, ebben az apukámra
ütök.

Dear David,
I can’t tell you how delighted I was when I got your letter. It was very kind of you
to answer my letter so quickly. I was pleased to hear about you, your family and your
hobbies.
I’m also interested in corresponding with students of my age from different parts of the
world. This way I can learn so much about their homelands and their lifestyles. It’s both
enjoyable and useful, because I can improve my English in the meantime.
I also like reading books and browsing on the Internet in my free time. I love fiction and
I read a lot of poetry. My favourite poet is J. Pilinszky, whose short, 8-10 lined verses
especially appeal to me.
What kinds of books do you enjoy reading in you spare time? Whose books do you
especially like? Have you got a favourite band or piece of music?
As for me, I’m not particularly keen on music, although I played the violin for four years.
The kind of music that I often listen to these days is basically light pop music. I’ve got
some favourite bands at the moment, but this always changes. Now I like the songs by
Guns and Roses and Lady Gaga. If you should come across any photos of them could you
send them to me? I would be really grateful.
In the rest of my free time I love keeping company, going out and having fun. I’ve got
quite a few friends, which I’m very happy about. In this, I think, I take after my father.

Válasz Magyarország fekvése és éghajlata iránt érdeklődő levélre

Kedves Fiona!
Az utolsó leveledben arra kértél, hogy írjak neked Magyarországról, a fekvéséről és az
éghajlatáról.
Nos, Magyarország egy szép kis közép-európai ország, amelyet nyugatról Ausztria, észak-
ról szlovákia, keletről Ukrajna és Románia, délről pedig a volt Jugoszlávia utódállamai
határolnak.
Sajnos nem vagyunk tengerparti ország, de van egy gyönyörű tavunk, amelyet Balaton-
nak hívnak és amely Közép-Európa legnagyobb édesvizi tava. A tó Magyarország nyugati
részében van, kellemes, dombos vidéken. Egyébként nálunk nincsenek magas hegyek. A
legmagasabb csúcs, az ország északi részében is alig több, mint 1000 méter.
A keleti vidék sík és úgy hívják, hogy a Nagy Magyar Alföld. Gazdag tapasztalatot szerez-
hetnek itt azok, akik Magyarország múltjáról és a falusi élet hagyományairól szeretnének
tájékozódni.
Hát nem lenne jó meglátogatni ezeket a helyeket egyszer együtt? Különösen tavasszal,
vagy nyár elején, amikor az idő még nem olyan szörnyen meleg.
Erről jut eszembe, hogy most éppen egy melegfront ért el minket és 30 fok fölött van a
hőmérséklet. Tulajdonképpen nyáron ez egészen normális és nem is tart tovább két-há-
rom hétnél. Mivel mi a mérsékelt égövben vagyunk, így nem igazán tapasztalunk szélső-

Dear Fiona,
In your last letter you asked me to write you about Hungary, her location and climate.

Well, Hungary is a lovely little country in Central Europe bordered by Austria in the
west, Slovakia in the north, the Ukraine and Romania in the east and Serbia, Slovenia
and Croatia in the south.
Unfortunately, we are not a coastal country, but we have a beautiful lake called Balaton,
which is the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe. It’s in the west of Hungary, in a
nice hilly area. Otherwise, we don’t have high mountains; the highest peak, in the north
of the country, is just over 1,000 metres.
The eastern region is level and it’s called ‚The Great Hungarian Plain’. It’s a rich source of
experience for those who want to learn about Hungary’s past and traditional village life.

Wouldn’t it be nice to visit all these places together some time? Especially in spring or at
the beginning of summer when the weather is not yet awfully hot.
By the way, we are having a heat-wave right now and it’s more than 30 degrees. Actually,
it’s quite normal in summer, and usually it doesn’t last longer than two or three weeks.
Since we are in the temperate zone, we don’t have really extreme weather conditions. In
winter it can drop to minus 15-20 but rarely does it go below that.

I have heard that in America you have tornadoes, torrential rains and floods in some parts
of the country and droughts in other parts. I would be very interested to hear a bit more
about it.

Kedves Al!
Nagyon köszönöm a leveledet. Jóleső érzés volt, hogy ennyire felkeltette érdeklődésedet
országunk és annak népe. Most megpróbálom néhány mondatban összefoglalni a legfon-
tosabb dolgokat.
Az őseink több, mint ezer évvel ezelőtt telepedtek le a Kárpát-medencében. Most körül-
belül tíz millió magyar él ezen a területen, az ország határain belül. A hiedelemmel ellen-
tétben a magyar nyelv nem szláv, hanem finnugor eredetű és azt mondják, hogy nagyon
nehéz megtanulni.
A magyarokat nagyon vendégszerető nemzetnek ismerik. Azt mondják rólunk, hogy ked-
vesek és társaságkedvelők vagyunk és szívesen hívunk vendégeket az otthonainkba, hogy
finom ételekkel és italokkal kínáljuk őket. Talán az a tény, hogy mi magunk is nagy élve-
zetet találunk az evésben, járult hozzá ahhoz, hogy élelmiszer-feldolgozó iparunk olyan
híres a környékbeli országokban.
Ami a művészetek és a kultúra világát illeti, azt hiszem elfogultság nélkül állíthatjuk, hogy
Európa vezető nemzetei közé tartozunk. Sok világhírű zeneszerzővel, festővel, építésszel,
sőt tudóssal is dicsekedhetünk.
A magyar népművészet termékei pedig elsőrangúak és éppúgy elismeréssel nyilatkoznak
róluk a terület szakértői, mint az a sok-sok turista, aki ezért jön Magyarországra. Különö-
sen kedveltek a kézi hímzések és a hagyományos magyar néptánc előadások.

Az anyukám is szokott hímezgetni a szabad idejében. Ha érdekel, szívesen küldenék ne-

ked egy hímzett asztalterítőt.

Dear Al,
Thanks a lot for your letter. It was nice to hear that you have become so interested in
Hungary and her people. Now I’ll try to summarize the most important things in a few
sentences.
Our ancestors settled down in the Carpathian Basin more than a thousand years ago.
There are at present about ten million Hungarians living in this area, within the borders
of the country. Contrary to what most people think Hungarian is not a Slavonic, but a
Finno-Ugrian language and they say it’s very difficult to learn.
Hungarians are known to be a hospitable nation. They say we are kind and sociable and
like to invite people to our homes to serve them good food and drinks. Perhaps the fact
that we ourselves take great delight in eating has made the country’s food processing
industry so famous with the countries in the region.

As for the domains of arts and culture, we may, without bias, be said to belong to the top
nations of Europe. We can boast with many world famous composers, painters, architects
and even scientists.
The products of Hungarian folk art are outstanding and are very much appreciated by
experts in the field as well as the many tourists who come to visit the country as a result.
They especially favour handmade embroidery and enjoy watching traditional Hungarian
folk dances.
My mother also does embroidery when she has some free time. If you are interested I
would gladly send an emboidered table-cloth to you.

Válasz Magyarország politikai rendszeréről és a környező országokról

Kedves Gary!
Köszönöm a leveledet, amelyben olyan sok kérdést tettél fel nekem arról, hogyan is élnek
az emberek a világnak ebben a részében. Magyarország politikai rendszeréről is kérdeztél.
Úgy tűnik, tényleg nagyon érdekel, hogy mennek nálunk a dolgok.
Biztosan tudod, hogy Magyarország már jó ideje köztársaság. Igazából 1989-ben lett az,
több mint 40 évi szocialista uralom után.
Egy meglehetősen konzervatív, jobb-közép párt nyerte meg az első szabad választásokat,
1990-ben, de négy évvel később, a magyarok megint a szocialistákra szavaztak. Ez nem azt
jelenti, hogy a szocializmus visszatérését akarták, pusztán csak nagyobb szociális bizton-
ságban szerették volna érezni magukat, mint amilyenben a demokrácia első négy éve alatt
voltak. Az igazság az, hogy a magyarok még mindig nincsenek hozzászokva a kapitalizmus
kemény törvényeihez. Magántulajdont és szociális biztonságot is akarnak. A hatalmon
lévő politikai pártok azóta is váltogatják egymást, de egyik sem tudott igazán biztonságos
szociális rendszert teremteni.
Magyarországon a szokásos 40-órás munkahét mellet sokan másodállásban, sőt néha még
egy harmadik állásban is dolgoznak. Sok tekintetben még mindig jobban állunk, mint a
környező országok. Határainktól keletre száguldó infláció és rendkívül nehéz életkörül-
mények vannak, a tőlünk északra és délre lévő országok pedig szintén keményen próbálják
leküzdeni a világban előállt gazdasági nehézségeket.
Mi mindig a változások élharcosai voltunk és remélhetőleg hamarosan javulni fognak a
dolgok. Nyugodtan kérdezzél bármiről, amiről többet szeretnél hallani. Várom leveledet.

Dear Gary,
Thank you for your letter full of so many questions about how people live in this part of
the world. You also asked me about the political system of Hungary. You seem to be really
interested in the way things go over here.
I’m sure you know that Hungary has been a republic for quite a long time now. Actually,
she became one in 1989 after more than forty years of socialism.
It was a fairly conservative, centre right-wing party that won the first free elections in
1990, but four years later the people of Hungary voted for the socialists again. It doesn’t
mean that they wanted the return of socialism, it just means that they would have liked to
feel socially more secure than they did during the first four years of democracy. The truth
is that the people of Hungary are still not used to the harsh laws of capitalism. They want
both private property and social security. The ruling political parties have kept changing
ever since but none of them have been able to establish a really safe social system.

In Hungary, apart from the normal 40-hour working week, most of us have second, and
sometimes third jobs. In many respects we are still doing better than the countries around
us. To the east of our borders there is galloping inflation and extremely difficult living
conditions, and the countries to the north and to the south of us are also struggling hard
to combat the hardships emerging in the world economy.
We have always been in the forefront of these changes and hopefully things will pick up
soon. Just feel free to ask me about anything you want to hear more about. I am looking
forward to your letter.

Kedves Julie!

Nagyon köszönöm a leveledet. Sajnálom, hogy nem írtam korábban, de nagyon lekötött
a vizsgákra való készülés.
Most egy kicsit lecsendesedtek a dolgok, így több időm van másra is, így például arra,
hogy levelet írjak neked. Először is a nagy hír: minden vizsgám sikerült, méghozzá egész
jó eredménnyel. Azt hiszem, hogy megérdemeltem. Tényleg sokat tanultam.
Még nincs semmi határozott tervem a nyárra. Mindössze annyit tudok, hogy szeretnék el-
menni valahová a tengerpartra a barátommal. De az anyukámnak még nem mondtam el.
Tulajdonképpen anya nincs valami jól mostanában. Erős derékfájásokra panaszkodik.
Már sokszor mondtam neki, hogy menjen el orvoshoz, de nem akar. Azt mondja, hogy
nem szeretne betegszabadságra menni és, hogy majd magától is elmúlik a fájdalom.
Mi is történt még? Az apukám épp most jött haza egy üzleti útjáról. Prágában volt és azt
hiszem szerelmes lett a városba. Azt mondja, hogy az egész város csodálatos épületek út-
vesztője, és kellemes történelmi hangulatot áraszt. Azt nem szeretem apában, hogy olyan
sokat utazik, és soha nincs ideje arra, hogy leüljön velem beszélgetni. Valójában nincsenek
nagy problémáim, de gyakran egyszerűen hiányolom a jelenlétét.
Az öcsémnek, aki még csak 14 éves, még nagyobb szüksége lenne rá, mint nekem. Nem
tanul valami jól az iskolában és sok nógatást igényelne. A múltkor is egyest kapott matek-
ból és apa még csak nem is tud róla. Megértem, hogy pénzt kell keresnie, hogy eltartsa a
családot, de megéri-e így?
Ami engem illet, én még mindig a kézilabdának szentelem szabadidőm nagy részét. Min-
den második délutánom edzéssel töltöm, hétvégeken pedig ott vannak a meccsek. Nem
is bánnám, hogy ilyen sok időm elmegy rá, ha jól játszana a csapatunk. De nem így van.
Tudod létezik valamiféle megelégedettség, amit a sikerélmény nyújt, de ha az embert min-
dig csak megverik, egy idő után elveszíti az önbizalmát. És önbizalom nélkül pedig nincs
sport. Így aztán komolyan fontolgatom, hogy örökre abbahagyom. Te mit gondolsz erről?
Most éppen a szobámban ülök és nézem, hogy ömlik az eső. Nem is volt még igazán jó
idő ezen a nyáron. Tulajdonképpen eddig csak nedves és hűvös volt az idő. Azt mondják,
hogy ez jót tesz a veteményeknek, mert a talaj az utóbbi pár évre jellemző kevés esőzésnek
köszönhetően teljesen kiszáradt.
Egyelőre nincs több hírem. Írjál gyorsan és tudasd velem, hogy mi történik körülötted
mostanában.

Dear Julie,

Thank you so much for your letter. Sorry, I haven’t written to you earlier, but I’ve been
really busy studying for the exams.
Now things are getting a bit more quiet and so I have a little more time for other things,
like writing to you. First of all the great news: I managed to pass all my exams with quite
good results. I think I deserved it. I had been studying really hard.
I haven’t got any definite plans for the summer yet. All I know is that I would like to go
somewhere by the sea with my friend. But I haven’t told my mother about it yet.
Actually, my mother is not very well these days. She complains of strong pains in her
small of the back. I have told her several times to go to the doctor’s, but she won’t. She
says she doesn’t want to go on sick leave and that the pain will wear off by itself.
What else has happened? My father has just returned from a business trip in Prague and
I think he has fallen in love with the city. He says it’s a maze of beautiful buildings and
it has a nice historic atmosphere. What I don’t like about my father is that he travels
so much that he never has time to sit down and talk to me. I don’t really have great
problems, but very often I just miss his presence.
My brother, who is only 14 now, would need him even more than I do. He is not doing
particularly well at school and he would need a lot of prodding. The other day he got a
one in Maths and father doesn’t even know about it. I understand that he has to earn
money to keep the family, but is it worth it?
For my part, I still devote most of my free time to handball. I go to work-outs every other
afternoon and there are the matches at the weekends. I wouldn’t mind spending so much
of my time on it, if our team were doing well. But it’s not. You know there’s a certain
satisfaction which you get from the feeling of success, but if you are always beaten you
lose confidence after a while. And without confidence there’s no sport. So I’m seriously
considering giving it up for good. What do you think?
Now I’m sitting in my room and looking at the rain pouring down. We haven’t had really
warm weather this summer yet. Actually, it’s been quite cool and wet. They say it’s good
for the crops, because the soil is extremely dry due to that long period of very little rain
we’ve had for the last few years.
