Namulat at

The role of technological change in culture

July 19, 2017 Richard Van Wageningen , Digital Transformation

The human touch

We humans are social animals. Technology can’t replace human interaction. We need to combine the
human and digital elements to communicate across our borders.

Between 70 and 80 percent of our communication is often non-verbal, which is why we at Orange
believe in the importance of the human touch in digital transformation. Body language can be a
powerful tool in business communications.

In our Russian office, our meeting rooms are branded with the slogan "communication makes magic." By
this, we mean face-to-face communication. Despite all the technological marvels we have today, you
can still achieve much by actually talking to each other in person. This, for me, underlines how we can
combine digital transformation and personal communication and put the "human" into technology.

Cultural divide

The cultural divide is also dictated by the different technological possibilities available and what users
are allowed to use. In Europe, for example, the Internet is used for connecting business, and the
Internet of Things (IoT) is making rapid inroads into a number of industries already. In areas of my region
– in both Africa and Russia – there simply aren’t the connectivity speeds, or in some cases, connection
capability, to make this happen. So we have to be more innovative, while meeting the needs of the user.

Of course, we have the global leapfrogging phenomenon where technologically less-advanced countries
jump generations of legacy technologies to adopt more advanced solutions. In some cases, building
quality fixed networks was prohibitive, so regions ended up with mobile. Moscow is certainly ahead of
4G compared to many European countries, and its users pay less. Muscovites pay less than 10 euros for
unlimited 4G.

This leapfrogging changes cultural heritage; using the latest technology that previous generations did
not have changes mind sets. There are also discrepancies between developed and non-developed parts
of countries that need to be taken into account when looking at statistics. I was reading an article that
reported 52 percent of Russian people said if they did not have the Internet tomorrow, it would not
change their lives. Yet there are 900,000 software developers in Russia. This is a huge paradox.

There are initiatives, in which Orange is helping, to address this. It supports the Digital India program, for
example, which was launched to digitally empower Indian people. At the same time, Orange Healthcare
is working on m-health solutions in Africa, where 62 percent of the population resides in rural areas.
These solutions will bring critical services to the people.

Let’s talk

Technology and culture directly influence each other. As cultures change, so does the technology it
innovates. Much of this is for the greater good. It is, for example, a massive aid to global
communication. But we must not forget how to talk face-to-face and the impact it can have in crossing
the cultural divide.

Technology and Culture: A Circle of Influence

There has always been a connection between technology and culture. From the first use of stone tools
to the development of handheld Personal Digital Assistants (PDA), technology has influenced human
culture just as much as culture has sparked advancements in technology. It is a complex relationship
that forms a figurative circle of influence. There is no real starting or end points within the circle – both
technology and culture continue to influence each other as they develop and change over time. In the
19th, 20th and 21st centuries, technology and culture have significantly influenced one another. As
cultures change so does the technology they develop. With developments in manufacturing,
communications and engineering, cultures have been re-shaped around the world by freeing people
from small family farms by choice or by force, dispersing information and changing the landscape.
These technological developments have changed the cultures positively but negatively as well. Cultures
in turn drive technological development. While it is difficult to explain all of the examples of how
technology has influenced culture and vice versa, reviewing a few examples from the last few centuries
it is clear the technology developed during and after the Industrial Revolution has changed cultures from
simple farming villages to modern bustling cities and sprawling suburbs.

The American Industrial Revolution of the 19th century drastically influenced American culture.
Corporations began to manufacture goods that had previously been made in the home. Goods were
mass produced using machinery instead of people. The advances in manufacturing had four major
effects on American culture.

The first major influence of manufacturing allowed people to purchase goods in a store instead of
having to make everything from scratch. This freed up a lot of time for people because they no longer
had to spend all of their time producing food, clothing and other goods for their families. Kevin Reilly
(2004) discusses how industrialization allowed machines to mass produce interchangeable parts. This
meant that a machine could be built to make one particular item much faster than any skilled artisan
could. Machinery eliminated the need for skilled workers. “Interchangeable parts were first invented
for muskets to meet the needs of war or expected war” (Reilly, 2004). This technology also translated
into farming and household goods. Consumers could go to a store and purchase a replacement part
instead of having to make one from scratch. No longer was a taylor needed to make a suit; a seamstress
on an industrial sewing machine could be trained to sew one portion of the suit very quickly. With an
increase in production speed without skilled labor, companies were able to mass produce goods much
cheaper than a skilled artisan could and exact copies of replacement parts could be easily obtained.
Industrialization freed up individuals’ time that had previously been spent making goods by hand.

Negative effects of technology

Tech vs Traditional Stuff:

None can be dripped from the list because everyone has to move with the flow of time. We cannot say
that innovations should be avoided rather make some way to use them in the right direction. Someone
can use a camera phone all the time for selfies and others can use it for taking note’s images from fiend’
assignment. Better to find some sort of balance. For that read the working of a brand new tool and its
outcomes Cultural values and factors related to that are also essential and strong connection that can
never ever be omitted from our society. The point is innovations should have interacted with the local
culture for better working in a progressive line. For example, smartphone and computer-operated items
are much needed in current cultural and social environment to enhance the smart working so find a
better way to adopt.

We are completely covered by different diverse kind of technological instruments such as:

• Robotics and machine learning tools

• Cyberspace frameworks

• Computer-generated Human behaviors

• Else gadgets like smartphones, software applications, internet devices, and cameras are some of the
moves that are helpful for all of us.

Consequences of Smartphone usage on culture:

Coming back towards our main that is explicitly related to smartphone excessive usage and their
negative impacts on individual’s lives and broader effects on social norms. Just as an example, at the
time in your office, the use of a smartphone would slow your work, and interrupt those quiet moments
that are so crucial to develop an important structure and task. It would be difficult to focus and make
decisions with creativity and problem-solving angle. The other perspective should be to take a deep
breath and let’s move things in a steady manner.

• Vulnerable Segment

The real-time problem that has been developed in our societies is the involvement of vulnerable
segments with smartphone devices. You can’t convince your children to avoid excessive and
unnecessary usage of a smartphone if you are using such gadgets all the time in front of them. They are
always trying to copy their elders and in result lose their focus from important items.

• Social interaction

In the past, we are living in the age of darkness and after centuries of wait reached to a point where we
are using some fast and smart means. Our way of working has been improved so much and we are able
to complete our projects within few days. But the negative perspective is that we lost our connection
from family traditions. We are sitting next to each other but busy with technological gadgets like
smartphones. Our children in the past were smart in physical activities and sports but now they are
mentally sharp but physically unfit.

Technology and Its Impact on Society and Culture

By Barbara Bray September 25, 2007 -- 01:20 PM

Society has always been impacted by technology. Each invention has affected how people relate to one
another and how cultures have expanded or ended. Technology impacts how cities grow, where people
live, and who owns what. Technologies are the reason a few people are very rich, that people are more
social, and that teaching and learning is changing. We are at a crucial time in history where we as
educators can make a difference in how our students interact with one another and make a place for
themselves in society.

Historical Perspective

People developed a language so they could communicate and learn from elders through their stories.
They invented tools for agriculture, to build homes, and to create weapons for hunting and protection.
Civilizations have been impacted by natural disasters, encroachment from other civilizations, and from
problems within their own community. Technology not only increased humans’ life span but how we
live, how long we live, and how many there are of us.
