1.0 SCOPE
This specification describes the general requirements for horizontal and vertical firewater
pumps, drivers, controllers, gears, jockey pumps, starters, and accessories designed
specifically for fire protection service. Supplier shall consult the data sheets to determine if
UL/FM labeling is required. This specification supplements the data sheets on which the
operating conditions and special requirements are listed in detail for each pump. Where
conflicts exist, the Datasheet shall govern.

3.0 DEFINITIONS

5.0 SUBMITTALS
The Contractor shall submit to MARAFIQ, the following items for review and approval before
commencing the work:

Product data shall include principal dimensions, general construction and material for
each item intended to be furnished and installed.

Installation Instructions
Submit copies of the manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions for all
equipment. Include valve data and servicing instructions.
Shop Drawings
Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 20.
Submit Coordination Drawings
As-Built Drawings
Clearly indicate sprinklers, systems, locations and symbols on the Shop Drawings
and As-built plans.
Clearly indicate valves, alarms and controls locations.
Identify any variation from Contract Drawings.
Maintenance and Operating Instructions
Submit data conforming to NFPA 20 for maintenance of fie pumps.
Equipment manufacturer recommended spare parts and tools list.
Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
Test Reports
Accurately record and report the methods of testing, times and dates of the test,
witnesses to the test, and the results of the test.
Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements in NFPA
20.
7.0 PRODUCTS
All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when available,
from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products manufactured out-
of-Kingdom must be approved by MARAFIQ. All products, system components and hardware
shall be in compliance with NFPA 13. Only listed materials and devices shall be used in the
installation of automatic wet sprinkler system. Components that do not affect system
operation, such as drain valves and signs, shall not be required to be listed.
System components shall be rated for the maximum working pressure to which they are
exposed, but not less than 12.1 bar (175 psi). System components installed outside, or in the
presence of a corrosive atmosphere, shall be constructed of materials that will resist corrosion
or shall be suitably protected from corrosion.
All products, system components and hardware shall be in compliance with the applicable
NFPA standards and the Project Specifications.
All valves, sprinklers, alarms and any additional fire fighting equipment shall be UL listed
and/or FM approved.
All fire department connections, couplings and thread types shall be fully coordinated and
matched with Local Fire Department requirements. No single thread type or coupling shall be
purchased before confirming and fulfilling Local Fire Department conditions.
All valves and piping downstream of the pumps must be designed for the full working
pressure of the pump discharge.
Materials of ASTM quality or approved substitutes shall be used. Castings shall be sound
and free from shrink or blow holes, scale, blisters, and other defects. The surfaces shall be
cleaned by Supplier’s standard methods. Casting burrs shall be filed or ground flush with the
surface of the casting.
If required on the data sheet, Supplier shall furnish a flow test header for all pumps with hose
valve test head and angle valves with brass caps and chains. Items shall be in accordance
with NFPA 20 and shipped loose for installation by others.
Automatic air release valve (both jockey and main fire water pumps) is to be furnished.
Circulation relief valve for thermal minimum flow protection shall be furnished for motor driven
main firewater pump only.
Main relief valve and sizing basis shall be furnished for engine driven firewater pump only.
Relief valves for other pumps shall be furnished as required per NFPA 20.
Equipment shall be suitable for outdoor installation in a desert environment with an ambient
temperature of 500C. Site conditions will be provided on the data sheet.
If manufacturer indicates protection from the environment by a house is warranted, it shall be
included as a separate item in his quotation. Manufacturer shall provide complete details
including dimensions and separation wall between diesel engine and motor driven pumps with
suitable ventilation.
The column pipe shall be provided in interchangeable sections. Each section shall
not exceed a length of 3048 mm. The top and bottom column sections may be
unique and shall not exceed 1524 mm in length. Column piping shall be
manufactured by a Purchaser approved manufacturer. Material shall be as specified
on the data sheet. The column piping shall be of sufficient strength to support
mechanical and hydraulic loads (including when the column piping and pump bowl
assembly is lifted with water in it).
The column assembly shall be open lineshaft with cutless rubber bearings held in
place by 316 stainless steel spiders located, as a minimum, at each column flange.
The machine bolts and nuts for the column pipe flanges shall be 316 stainless steel, a
minimum of 16 mm (5/8 inch) in diameter with a minimum of 12 bolts at each flange
connection. Two nuts shall be used per bolt. When installed, the end of each bolt
shall be flush with the outer end of the nut to avoid aquatic growth collecting on the
threaded surfaces of the bolt.
Column centralizers shall be provided which shall be 316 stainless steel.
Supplier shall make a design analysis of all columns to verify their structural integrity
and all vibrating frequencies. As an alternate, Supplier may cite proven experience
with the proposed column size and length in a similar installation.
The line shaft shall have a TIR that shall not exceed 0.127 mm (0.005 inch) per 3 m
of shaft length.
The suction strainer shall be of the basket type bolt-on construction and shall have a
free area of at least four (4) times the area of the pump suction. Strainer and screen
shall meet the requirements of NFPA 20. Metallurgy shall be as specified on the data
sheet.
The discharge head (above ground type) shall be located above the top of the
structural steel baseplate.
The discharge head shall be designed for the entire support for the right angle gear,
column piping, line shaft, bowl assembly and strainer.
The stuffing box shall be removable and equipped with a high pressure head and
throat bushing. The stuffing box shall have a register fit on the discharge head.
Stuffing boxes subjected to discharge pressure shall have a bleedoff line to the
suction side in order to reduce the differential pressure across the packing materials.
The outlet flange of the discharge head shall be ANSI 150# flanges with flange face
as indicated on the data sheets. An outlet shall be provided on the discharge head to
supply cooling water to the engine heat exchanger. The discharge head shall be
mounted to the baseplate using minimum 25.4 mm (1 inch) diameter bolts.
Two access openings with guards located 900 from the discharge centerline shall be
provided in the discharge head. Guards shall be non-sparking material. Aluminum
shall not be used in near-coastal marine and offshore environments. The discharge
head baseplate shall be equipped with a 25.4 mm (one inch) 3000# coupling for
injection of suitable biocide.
The discharge head shall be equipped with two lifting lugs designed with a safety
factor of 4 to 1 based on lifting the entire assembly consisting of the column piping,
shaft and pump bowls and impellers.

Discharge head baseplate shall be equipped with one cable penetration and one thief
hatch for dropping 76.2 mm (3 inch) diameter chlorine tablets, if required.
Bowls shall be bolted type with register fits to ensure alignment. Renewable bowl
wear rings shall be furnished with an interference fit.
Impellers shall be the enclosed type. Impellers shall be secured to the shaft by a key-
and-split collar device with positive locking.
Line shaft minimum diameter shall be 38 mm. It is preferred for shafts to have key-
and-split ring couplings. Couplings shall be located a maximum of 300 mm from the
column pipe flanges.
Shaft sleeves shall be furnished at the bearing location and at the packing or seal
area. Shaft sleeves shall extend to the packing seal gland area.
9.4 Couplings
9.4.1 Engine – Gear Box Coupling

10.1 Impellers
Impellers shall be closed, dynamically balanced, of one-piece construction and shall
be keyed to the shaft. Impellers shall be individually secured against axial movement
in either direction.
10.3 Bearings
Bearings shall be oil lubricated. Ring oil hydrodynamic-sleeve radial bearings shall
be required under any of the following conditions:
For between bearing pumps where DN factors are 300,000 or greater (DN = bearing
bore diameter in inches X RPM).
Where antifriction radial bearings fail to meet the minimum AFBMA L-10 rating life of
three years or 25,000 hours.
Where the driver rated power is 300 kW or greater.
Each bearing housing shall be provided with the following:
A Trico constant level oiler secured to the bearing housing.
A housing drain plug with a visible water trap to remove condensation from the oil
sump.
A permanent indication of proper oil level, accurately located at the required oil level
line and clearly marked on the outside of the bearing housing, adjacent to the
constant-level sight feed oiler.
Skin temperatures on the bearing housing during shop testing and field operation
shall not exceed 880C. Bearing oil temperatures shall not exceed 820C at any
operating or ambient condition.
Sleeve bearings shall have provisions for shaft vibration measurements adjacent to
the bearings.
10.4 Couplings
Couplings shall be non-lubricated and shall consist of forged steel hubs and spacers
with 300 series stainless steel flexible elements. Couplings shall be keyed in place.
Disk material shall be 300 series stainless steel. Carbon steel disks are
unacceptable.
The rating of the coupling shall be equal to the maximum driver horsepower, including
the service factor.
The maximum operating torque load of the coupling shall be limited to 80% of the
coupling Supplier’s rating.
The hub bore and rim of the couplings shall be concentric within 0.0125 mm.
Spacer length shall permit removal of the pump rotor, the bearing brackets or the
mechanical seal (if provided) without disturbing the driver. Minimum spacer length
shall be 125 mm.
For horizontal pumps driven by motors rated above 75 kW, and for pumps driven by
turbines, the Supplier shall deliver a pilot-bored driver half-coupling to the driver
Supplier’s plant for final boring and mounting.
No component of the unit (or accessories) may overhang the baseplate except the motor
conduit box.
Baseplates shall have a full metal deck with provisions for complete drainage through a 25.4
mm (1 inch) NPT drain connection at the edge of the baseplate.
A minimum of two 101.6 mm (4 inch) diameter grout holes with raised lips to prevent liquid
accumulation over the grout shall be provided along with sufficient vents for complete grout
distribution, arranged to allow for grouting with all components in place, shall be included.
Where practical, use 152.4 mm (6 inch) grout holes. Data sheet shall indicate if grout will be
used in the field.
Pump and driver support pads shall be machined flat and in the same plane. Driver support
pads shall be machined to have 3.175 mm (1/8 inch) (minimum) shim space available for
horizontal pumps and drivers.
Horizontal jack screws (or Purchaser approved substitute) shall be provided to achieve
horizontal alignment on all baseplates for drivers in excess of 454 kg.
Shaft centerlines of pumps shall be of sufficient height above the baseplate to permit the
piping of all auxiliary connections.
Supplier’s pump and driver units shall be aligned, but not doweled, to the baseplate.
12.0 ELECTRICAL
Electrical components shall be tropicalized and suitable for the electrical area classification
specified on the data sheet.
Supplier shall furnish grounding provisions for all equipment. Bolted equipment shall have
separate ground lugs with ground bonding cable connected to skid structure.
Electrical end devices shall be terminated at a skid mounted equipment control panel. All
field switches (hand/off/auto; reset; etc.) and status indication lights shall be mounted on this
panel.
c) Motor starter
d) Integral pressure-sensitive switch for automatic starting of the motor. The pressure
switch shall have a calibrated dial for pressure setting adjustments over a range of
5.86 barg through 9.65 barg (85 psig through 140 psig).

e) Start / stop pushbuttons
Diesel engine-driven firewater pump controllers shall be of the combined manual and
automatic type. Adequate bracing and suitable vibration isolators shall be provided by the
Supplier. Control devices required for automatic operation shall be within locked cabinet with
break glass panel with provisions for releasing lock for emergency opening of door. It shall
include, as a minimum, the following:
a) Main control selector switch
b) Integral pressure sensitive switch for automatic start of diesel engine. The pressure
switch shall have a calibrated dial adjustment for pressure setting over a range of
5.86 barg through 9.65 barg (85 psig through 140 psig).
c) Provisions for automatically alternating dual storage batteries for cranking and
control power.
d) Intermittent cranking of engine with lockout, if engine fails to start within 90 seconds.
e) Visual indication for the following, as a minimum:
Power available battery #1
Power available battery #2
Power available in starting circuit
a) Visual and audible alarms for the following, as a minimum:
Engine failed to start
High engine jacket water temperature
Low oil pressure
Overspeed (shutdown)
Low fuel oil day tank level
Battery failure
a) Remote alarms (see below)
b) Provision for remote start

c) Automatic battery charger at its rated voltage shall be capable of fully restoring the
batteries within a 24 hour period.
d) For the air start system, the controller shall be of an “air to start/positive action (air)
to kill” design. Once the engine is started, no air or electrical power shall be required
to keep the engine running. Low pressure sensors for air cylinders (if provided) shall
be supplied in the controller by Supplier.
The overspeed shutdown device shall operate via a fuel control valve and an air
intake shutoff valve, if furnished.
Fuel filters shall be per Supplier standard with 10 micron nominal replaceable
cartridge elements, easily replaced.
Fuel overflow line shall be piped to the skid drain pan.
Flame arrestor shall be located a minimum of 3048 mm above the fuel tank fill nozzle.
Current carrying parts shall not be less than 305 mm above the floor level.
All remote pressure switches, flow switches and control stations in classified
locations shall be explosion proof.
Maintenance free, permanently filled batteries shall not be used.
Electrical equipment not kept inside heated buildings (such as automatic starter
relays or battery chargers) shall be installed in stainless steel watertight NEMA
type 4X enclosures.
16.0 STRUCTURAL
Supplier shall furnish structural steel skid. Skid shall have full depth load bearing members
running both longitudinally and transversely.
Supplier shall provide four (4) adequately sized lifting attachments for proper handling of the
equipment during transporting, handling and installation. If pad eyes are used, they shall
have a safety factor of 3.
Lifting attachments shall be located to maintain a package at near level altitude while lifting it
(maximum allowable tilt shall be 5% from horizontal). Equipment and ancillaries on the skid
shall be located such that they will avoid interference with slings during lifting. If this is not
able to be accomplished, a spreader bar shall be furnished by Supplier.
17.0 PAINTING
A standard finish paint is acceptable only if it is suitable for the site environmental conditions
and the component design temperature. Supplier shall submit the painting specifications for
Puchaser’s review.
Stainless steel surfaces, internal and finished surfaces (such as flange faces, shafts and
couplings) shall not be painted.
Final color shall be red for fire water service.
19.1 Engine
Supplier shall guarantee all work to be free from defects in design, workmanship,
materials and equipment in accordance with the purchase order requirements.
19.1.1 Operating Under Load
Engine performance shall be guaranteed for ¼, ½ and full load operation at
the ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. Engines shall be

20.0 INSPECTION
Supplier shall furnish the Purchaser copies of Supplier's inspection and quality control plan.
For equipment to be inspected by Purchaser, inspection hold or witness points and
communication and notification procedures shall be established prior to the start of
fabrication.
Materials and workmanship shall be subject to inspection by the Purchaser in the shop and/or
in the field.
Purchaser’s inspector will check, as a minimum, equipment components, dimensions, and
quality of workmanship against certified drawings, data, and purchase order documents.
Supplier's weld inspector shall be qualified to AWS D1.1-CWI.
Purchaser reserves the right to inspect fabrication and welding of all components prior to start
of coating operations. Supplier shall provide five business days notification prior to initiation
of coating operations for inspection of unit.
Supplier shall facilitate Purchaser inspector’s work by furnishing copies of specified
certifications for materials, shop test data, etc. to verify compliance with specifications.
Supplier shall maintain for the inspector’s review such other records as are needed to ensure
compliance with material and fabrication specifications.
Purchaser shall be notified of all deviations from the original approved manufacturing
drawings. Any deviation shall be subject to Purchaser’s approval.
Any work which does not conform to the requirements of this specification shall be rejected
and replaced or redone at the Supplier’s expense to the satisfaction of the Purchaser.
21.0 TESTING
Supplier standard operational tests, in accordance with NFPA 20, Hydraulic Institute
Standards, and acceptable to the approving authority (UL or FM) shall be performed at the
Supplier’s facility to provide detailed performance data and to demonstrate that the pumps,
drivers, piping and controllers are in compliance with this specification, NFPA 20 and with
other applicable standards and codes.
Supplier shall provide individuals qualified to perform the tests assigned.
At least four (4) weeks in advance, Supplier shall provide a detailed testing procedure and
checklist for Purchaser’s approval for all tests.
Notification for testing shall be given to Purchaser a minimum of 10 business days prior to
testing.
The following types of testing are to be conducted in the Supplier shop:

Hydrostatic testing
Performance testing
Controller testing
A field acceptance test is required to confirm proper performance and shop test data. It shall
be witnessed by the authority having jurisdiction.
Calibrated test equipment shall be used for all tests. Calibrated gauges shall bear a label with
the latest date of calibration. They shall have been calibrated within the last year of the test
date.
22.0 DOCUMENTATION
Supplier shall supply the type and quantity of drawings and documentation for Purchaser’s
authorization or information as listed on the Supplier Drawing and Data Commitment Form.
Shipping saddles, bracing, supports, and rigging connections shall be provided to prevent
damage during shipment, lifting, or unloading.
Bearings and seal assemblies shall be fully protected from the entry of moisture and dirt.
Exposed unpainted surfaces, including bolting, shall be given a heavy coating of rust
inhibiting compound.
Pumps, drivers, and all furnished auxiliaries shall be shipped fully assembled except as
noted herein. Coupling spacers with bolts and other items, such as minimum flow orifices
which are not part of the pumping unit assembly, shall be separately boxed and securely
attached to the pump.
Horizontal pumps and drivers shall be mounted on the skid for shipment.
Vertical pumps along with gearboxes, motors and/or engine drivers shall be shop
mounted, aligned, match marked prior to disassembly for shipment. Vertical pumps,
gearboxes, and their motor drivers may be shipped separately from the skid.
Separate, loose items and spare parts shall be completely boxed. All pieces of equipment
and spare parts shall be identified by item number and service and marked with
Purchaser’s order number, item number, and weight on a packing list located both inside
and outside of each individual package or container. Supplier is required to send to
Purchaser these packing lists in advance of shipment.
One complete set of installation, operation, and maintenance instructions shall be packed
in the boxes or crates and shipped with the equipment.
Supplier shall provide 6 mm thick metal closures for all untapped and flanged openings
and bolt these in place with a minimum of four bolts and full rubber gaskets.
For shipping purposes, disconnect and plug all tapped openings using solid, long-shank
steel plugs.
Plug all tapped openings normally open during service using solid, long shank steel plugs
coated with anti-seize compound. Cast iron, brass, plastic and Teflon tape are
unacceptable for plugs. Plug all tapped openings in stainless steel valves, such as
needle valves and gauge valves, with type 316 stainless steel plugs.
Any items which can be damaged by water shall be securely wrapped in waterproof paper
or plastic before being placed in wooden crates.
