Letter Dd My Phonics - Review the previous lesson through the ‘Memory

skills – p.14 & 15

Listening, Materials - Ask students to memorize the order of these cards
Speaking,  CD - Ask students to close their eyes, remove one

2. Presentation & Practice
Sight 1. Listen, point and repeat. Colour (Track 20):
words Introduction of letter Dd, its sound and how to
it, is, a pronounce the words beginning with Dd (7mins)
Use a card with letter Dd (or write on the board
the letter Dd) to introduce to the students the new
lesson.
- Instruct students how to pronounce the letter name
and the letter sound by saying: “This is the letter Dd
/di/. The letter d says /d/.”
- Play the CD and ask the students to listen
- Ask the students to repeat several times and check
students’ pronunciation (letter Dd /di/ and its sound
/d/)

- Use the phonics cards with dog, drum, and


dragon read the words out loud and ask students to
repeat.
- Use gestures (hand actions) to help students to
understand the meanings of the three words.
- Check students’ understanding: Teacher says the
words, all students do actions and vice versa.
- Call some students to say the words out loud and
correct their mistakes (if any)
2.Activity: Where’s the Letter (3mins)
- Ask students to work in pair
- Hand out photocopies of pages from some story
books
- The students find and circle the letter Dd on these
pages in 2 minutes
- The pair that has circled the most Dds will be
winners
(This game can help the students understand the
link between the letter sounds and words in
books.)
3. Listen and point. Colour. (Track 21): Read the
statements with preceding “It is a” (5mins)
- Have students look at the books and listen to the
drill: It is a
- Point to the picture of dog and say: It is a dog. Ask
the students to point to it and repeat
- Follow the same procedure and present the rest of
pictures
- Play the CD. While the CD is playing, ask the
students to point to the corresponding picture and
repeat
- Ask students repeat by using the phonics cards of
dog, drum, dragon combining with gestures
- Then ask students to colour the drum using any
colour they like.
- Go around the classroom, asking students to name
the items they are coloring
4. Chant and show! (Track 22) (5mins)
- Put up the lyrics of the chant on the board

students to sing the chant with dog. Do the same


with drum and dragon.With music, the whole class
sings the whole chant.

Activity: (5mins)
- Divide the students into 3 groups (dog, drum,
dragon)
- Each group say the appropriate chant while the rest
of the class claps
- Ask the groups to show their corresponding picture
cards while they chant
OR
- Divide the students in 3 groups (dog, drum,
dragon)
- Play the chant again
- Each group mimes the corresponding actions
2. Production (5mins)
Activity 1: Writing in the air
- Show the letter Dd again, have students write the
Dd in air with their fingers.
Activity 2: Write the words in notebooks
- Ask students write down: Dd, dog, drum, dragon into their
notebook

Letter Dd Phonics - Choose 4 students

- Point to and say the sight words: look, at, the

Activity: Word Chain Game (5mins)


- Put phonics cards on the board in a given order, e.g.
dog, drum, dragon
- Invite the first student. He/ she says the first word in

the sequence, i.e. dog


- Invite another student. He/she says the next word in
the sequence, i.e. drum
- Continue with each student saying the next word in

- Remove one phonics card. Ask students repeat the
sequence, including the missing word
- Continue the same procedure until students can say
the whole sequence from memory

5. Song (Track 24) (5mins)


- Put the dog, drum and dragon phonics cards up on the
board.
- Point to the dragon, the drum and say: “It is a dragon
with a drum, boom, boom-boom”. The students repeat
- Follow the same procedure and present the rest of the
song. Students can turn to page 72.
- Play the CD. The students listen and sing along
- Play the CD again. The students sing and do
corresponding actions
Activity: Correct the Teacher (5mins)
- Hold up the phonics cards, one at a time
- Ask individual students to correct teacher’s statement
e.g. Teacher: (holding up dog phonics card) It is a
cat!
Student 1: No! It is a dog! etc.

7. Listen. Point and repeat. Colour the pictures of

7.1 Listen, point and repeat (5 mins)
- Show the students the doll phonics card. Point to it
and say: /d/ - doll. Ask them to repeat
- Mime holding a doll and say /d/, doll
- Encourage the students to do the same
- Say the letter and ask students do the action
- Play the CD
-Ask students to listen, point and repeat the word
7.2 Colour the pictures of the words that start
with the d sound. Say the d words (7 mins)
- Point to pictures and have students name them
- Name some colours and ask the students to repeat
- Ask the students to colour the pictures which have
Dd in them
- Give the students 4 minutes to colour in the ‘drum’
and ‘dog’. Go around the classroom providing any
necessary help
Activity: Craftwork (10mins)
- Ask the students to take out their notebooks
- Ask them to choose one word and then draw the
letter and the picture in their notebooks
- Tell them to colour the letter and the picture
- The three first students who finish will show their
picture to the class
OR
Activity: Speed Race (10mins)
- Put 3 chairs in front of the board
- Divide the students into 3 teams of 5, A, B and C
- Have a student from each team stand up
- Put a phonics card on each chair
- Call out one of the phonics cards
- The student standing tries to be the first to sit on the
chair with the corresponding phonics card

- Tell the students that you are going to write the

- Draw lines to the correct pictures that correspond
to each letter
