4. Read the Ukrainian passage below, identify the culturally based notions in it
and translate it into English.
Iran lives by its own countdown and has its own calendar (solar Hijra), which sets the new
year on March 20 - the day of the transition of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to
Medina in 621. Although Iran is one of the Muslim countries, the celebration of the New
Year (Nouruza) dates back to pre-Islamic times. Nowruz (literally "new day") falls on the
period of the vernal equinox, which means from ancient times in many nations the awakening
of nature. Our ancestors, dazhbozhiteli, also associated their new summer with spring.
According to Iranian custom, there should be seven things on the holiday table, the names of
which begin with the letter "c" (according to the Persian spelling): garlic, money (so that next
year would be rich), apples, and so on. Be sure to have a mirror (so that only good can be
seen in it), live fish in the water (symbol of life), the Koran (the holy book of Muslims) and a
bowl with green wheat sprouts.
