SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN MY COMMUNITY

Barangay Sapang is one of the enermous barangays

located in the northern part of the town of Bayambang
situated on the southern portion of the province of
Pangasinan. It is about 3.5 kilometers away from the town
proper and bounded by on the north- Brgy. Duera, on the
south by, Brgy. Asin, on the east part is by Brgy. Tamaro
and Brgy. Nalsian and on the west is by Brgy. Ligue and
Brgy. Amanperez. A tree called “Sapang” grew in
abundance in our place during the early days. This tree is
relatively tall with broad leaves and reddish bark, which
the early barangay folks used in rope making. This was
where name of our barangay the Barangay “Sapang”
evolved. Our barangay’s name was never been changed
even the
colonizers settled in this place. Barangay Sapang has
transformed from many generations; from having only few
people living in their nipa huts to a larger living in many
concrete houses; from narrow grassy footpaths to a wide
concrete roads; from animal pulled cart to tricycles,
jeepneys, vans and even buses as means of tranportations;
from t`he use of kerosene and oil lamps was tranformed
into electricity; and from many unschooled would already
transformed into a greater number of literates,
professionals and skilled workers, and many more. Because
changes is the only thing that change, our barangay is
already transformed into its changes as time passes by and
it would take again its changes into the near future. Sapang Elementary School established in 1931,
Sapang Catholic Chapel, the Barangay Hall, the day Care Center, the Barangay Plaza and Auditorium are
but some of the manifestations of transformation and progress in Barangay Sapang. These are the
landmarks of our barangay.

Barangay Sapang is having an overall

land area of 184.84 hectares which includes the
agricultural lands, barangay center land, school
land area and evacuation land area to make
complete the Barangay Sapang land areas. The
agricultural land is about 102 hectares ,while
the 71 hectares which is from household land
areas and the rest land areas will fall under the
landmarks of Barangay Sapang, which includes
Barangay Elementary School, Barangay Hall, Barangay Chapel, Barangay Evacuation Center, Barangay
Plaza and Barangay Multi-purpose Hall. According to our Barangay Admin, the population of Barangay
Sapang is about 1747 population including the senior cetizens, adults, teenagers, and childrens. There
are 435 households in our barangay. The number one source of income in our barangay is agriculture
which they plant rice grains, corn grains and even onions in order to have the salary ranging from 200-
400 pesos a day. Agricultural works can support the daily needs of every family. Education is the key or
their way to be employed and have a better job and salary as well. Because the number of people in our
barangay starts with the agriculture before they become successful as literates and confirmed as skilled
workers.

The community of Barangay Sapang had improve with the help of science. Barangay Sapang
identify the different things which includes science within our community. First thing that they had is the
different herbal medicines that the community had made. Herbal medicine are the first remedy of
Barangay Sapang in terms of their sickness for the past years and until now. Origanos, lagundi, guava,
katakataka, aloe vera, lemon grass, and etc. are some of the examples of different herbal medicines
found in our barangay. Lagundi is using for the
remedy of some illness like cough and other
respiratory diseases. They use the leaves of lagundi
for their treatment. Guavas are effective in a disease
which is diarrhea, it stimulates the digestive systems
to perform better and to be comfortable. This time,
they use the sprout leaves of guavas and take extract
in oder to get the guava sap. Guavas are also a
remedy for the wounds of an i njured or wounded
person. They take the extract of guavas by the
process of boiling and it is called “decoction” of guava
leaves. Origanos are effective as a treatment of fever.
It is mix with a hot water to rinse the origanos the leaves of origanos are must be applied in the
forehead of the fevered person in order for fast relieve while, the hot water may use to apply at the
arms and legs of the person who has fever. These are
the few examples for it has only one purpose that is
healing of every illness or sickness. Another thing arise
that science have been involved is the practical
massage of people in the community. From the early
times, one of our culture is to make massage the body
of our family in order to relax the muscles that made
them hurt. People in our community tend to practice
this manner not just as a part of a culture but also for
the remedy/solution for body aching. But for
nowadays, some students just like my brother who
accomplish the TESDA for massage service. He use his
learnings in order to have a job and being a massage
therapist, it gives him the better life for now. The science principle of medicine and massage activities
are focus on the health of the people within our community. It gives the comfortability and health
consciousness of every person in our community. By this given scientific principle of medicine and
massage activities, it helps the people in the community to decrease the possibilities of having them in
the hospital.

This 21st century which more improved

technologies are born, it would help alot to us.
Our community are representing some
technologies in each areas. Those areas are;
areas of family, areas of work, areas of
education, areas of social services and areas of
communication. From the areas of family the
technology they may be use is the improved type
of telivision like 32 inch telivision that have
higher specs. I mention the telivision because
telivision is one way of socialization of every
family which they can laugh, amaze, share thougts of what they had watched. From the areas of work,
they use transportation in order to go to the neighborhood barangay or municipalities just like
construction workers who uses motorcycles or tricycles to go to different barangays or municipalities
which they had work. Otherwise, because our barangay has a lot of agricultural land that tend to use
them the agricultural transportation like tractors, and kuliglig. New inventions has arise of what we
called “Kubota” an all in one corn and
palay harvester. Next, is the areas of
education which they use laptops to have
the information and stock information
documents that is with also help of
DLP/Pojector in dessiminating ideas and
informations. Other schools made use of
tablets as their materials in learning. Then,
the areas of social services would talks
about community services in our
community. These includes the services of
Barangay tanods or CVO’s and the Baragay
Health Workers (BHW). Some of our CVO’s are using walkie talkie telephone for their immediate
response. Lastly, the areas of communication deals with the gadgets like cellphone/smartphones. We all
know that we are in technological generation now, so that spreading of information is so easy. Because
of ICT (Information Communication Technology), we can easily say that Information can be transferred
through Communication with the help of Technology. All the technologies that are mentioned are
having different functions but it has only one goal that is to make life much easier and better.
Technologies have a great impact to us, it made us to be more progessive in all of our works. Because of
technology we are on our own place now.
 Modernization of our living generation
has a greate impact to all of us. Technology is
one of the instrument of our modern
generation. As I reflect, all of the technologies
change our lives. My community gain learnings
as the emerssion of science and technologies
occurs on us. We are now ready to face the
next generation because we all know that
science explains all the happennings in life but
with also the help of technology it made us to know more than what is explains in science.
