Course Title 1

NAME: BINWAG, LYKHA MAE G. DATE PERFORMED: 12-04-2020

INSTRUCTOR: ENGR. JESSICA
GROUP NO.: CABOTAJE

FIELDWORK NO.
TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEY
INTRODUCTION
The methods of determining the relative locations of points (places) on the earth’s
surface by measuring horizontal distances, differences in elevation and directions. This is used
to identify and map the contours of the ground and existing features on the surface of the earth
or slightly above or below the earth’s surface.

I. LEARNING OUTCOME
To be able to prepare a topographic map using and applying the characteristics of
the contour lines.

II. EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS
Total Station
Stadis Rods
Measuring Tape

III. PROCEDURE
1. Establish the required corners of the lot or use the data from the previous
fieldwork.
2. Consider the bench mark one, as established from previous fieldwork, which is
located outside the lot, and consider its elevation, serving as a basis for
determining the elevations of contour lines to be located.
3. Set and orient the instrument at T1, and take a backsight reading on BM-1 to
get the height of instrument, H.I.
4. Take foresight readings, FS = HI – elevation of contour lines, thus locating
several points backward or forward movements depending upon the slope of
the ground surface.
5. The instrument man should keep field notes, numbering the side shots
consecutively and stating the elevation of contour to which each belongs.

Course Title 2

6. If the stadia rod cannot be sighted, transfer the BM-I thus establishing BM-II and
take the same procedure.
7. Use data from a any surveying book except by Laputt.

STA BS HI FS ELEVATION
BM1 8.90 100.00
TP1 1.50 108.90 3.60 105.30
TP2 6.20 106.80 2.75 104.05
TP3 3. 25 6.80
BM2 5.30
SUM Σ= 22.85 Σ= 18.45

IV. Troubleshooting/Reflection
In solving for the height of the instrument and elevation, I realize that u need to
compute them properly to be able to have a correct output. Also, I got to know that
the BS and FS are very important to be able to get the HI and elevation. Because of
this, it is necessary to keep a good and correct values so that there will ot be a
problem in solving for the HI and elevation.
V. COMPUTATIONS
a. Difference in elevation

DE = BM2 elev – BM1 elev

b. Height of instrument

HI = Elev + BS
100.00 + 8.90 = 108.90
105.30 + 1.50 = 106.80

c. Elevation

ELEV = HI – FS
108.90 – 3.60 = 105.30
106.80 – 2.75 = 104.05

Arithmetic Check

(BM1 ELEV + ΣBS)
