Question 1))

Looking Good- Is it a liability for the world? (If we use just one unit each of shampoo, cream, soap
and toothpaste every month, you would have discarded close to 500 pieces in 10 years. Isn’t it
quite a number?)

2))Possible strategies to implement

‘Building and beautifying for the future’

1. Design

DIY the skincare according the individual’s needs

- Base serum in refillable packaging and smaller concentrates that can be bought  according
to usage, requirements and
blended proportionately during application.
- Anhydrous base serum (Carrier Oils - Squalane, Argan Oil) with Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA - Oil
soluble)
- Base serum contains brightening agents suitable for all skin types like Vitamin C and
Arbutin

Fragrance free products

Normalize the use of fragrance-free products as they do not contain chemicals harmful to
environment as well as the skin.

2. Sourcing

The sustainable ingredients

 The active ingredients can be sourced and extracted from various parts of the plants.
 Creating the product’s active ingredients using plant stem cells developed in their
lab, without ever harvesting actual plants, to preserve land, water resources and
biodiversity

Circular Line of skincare

Making products out of the organic waste

 Used coffee grounds, the main ingredient of the line’s shampoo, are turned into oil that can
be used to make different products such as soap, emulsifiers or cleaners.
 The shampoo bottle, also made from coffee grounds and other biodegradable materials, can
be “planted” — put the bottle in the ground and half a year later you’ll have the opportunity
to grow two coffee trees

Bio-based packaging material

Make the Packaging out of Shrimp Waste

 2-4g of chitosan extracted from shrimp cells is enough to make 3 bio-plastic bags.
 6-8 mil. tons of shrimp waste is generated every year
 2 pounds of shrimp waste = 15 bio-plastic bags
 Cost of bags Rs.2-5 depending on the size
 Use of fruits and vegetables waste in chitosan extraction process
3. Manufacturing

Formulation
 A cream-based formula contains 60-85% of water whereas a lotion contains up to
90%. Water based serums can contain up to 80% aqua. Anhydrous products don't
require preservatives and emulsifiers to increase shelf life. Water based serums
evaporate quickly leaving skin exposed again.
 Anhydrous serums can therefore be used in lesser quantities and provide protection
for longer time. Using Anhydrous Serum will reduce the water print.

Let the Tube Guide you

Scale on packaging to guide usage and enable pre-planning of repurchase.

4. Distribution

1. The staff will commute on electric vehicles and will be paid only per delivery like Swiggy
and Zomato.
2. Extra incentive will be given if bicycle is used to deliver the products
3. Central Information System to collate info about products to be delivered in same area so
that they can be delivered together in one trip

5. Consumer use phase

AWARE Consumer, HAPPY Consumer

- Colour coded secondary packaging. 75 % sustainable product has 75% green colour
translucent packaging.
- Acts as visual cues during point of purchase
to make consumers aware & showcases the
sustainability initiatives by Nykaa

Less is More
Frequent repurchase of only smaller concentrates will reduce product wastage (unused and
expired) and packaging required.
Anhydrous serums have longer shelf life in comparison to water-based serum

6. Post-consumer use phase

The Sustainability Flower ‘7 petals = 7 aspects of sustainability’

 A symbolic petal will be given inside the packaging of the product. On purchase of 7 Nykaa

 Nykaa will take an initiative to plant 7 plants symbolizing the 7 petals of sustainability flower
on 5th June World Environment Day.
 Redeemable sustainability points on every serum refill from Nykaa salons or kiosks.
