Verbals retain the characteristics of a verb but do not assert action and add variety and
picturesque was by their use as noun, adjective, or adverb.

Gerunds
A gerund is a verbal noun that ends in -ing.

Infinitives
An infinitive is a verbal made up of to plus the simple form of a verb.

Gerunds and Infinitives may be used interchangeably after certain verbs such as like, dislike,
hate, dread, plan, and intend. For verbs such as enjoy, despise, detest, soothe, and remember,
gerunds should be use.

Participles
A participle is a verb form used as an adjective to describe nouns and pronouns. It has two
forms:

1. The present participle which ends in -ing.


Example: living room

2. The past participle which ends in -ed, -d, -en, or -n.


Examples: loved one fallen leaves broken branches

Irregular verbs form their past participle with a different spelling of the verb as in the case of
brought, gone, sung, and swum.

A. A gerund may be used as a subject in a sentence.


Example: Training to be a computer engineer is not easy.

Selection
Becoming a saint does not happen overnight. It takes long years and extreme self-
sacrifice to earn that accolade. Mother Teresa is an example. In her lifetime she was known the
world over as "the living saint" or "the saint of the gutter". However, it took her years to sacrifice
the hard work before people started referring to her as the "living saint". She was one of the
world's greatest humanitarians. She lived a life of meaning through her concern for others.
Mother Teresa was the world's adopted mother.
