0.001 = 1125𝑘𝑁
∴ 𝜱𝑵𝒕 = 399𝑘𝑁 < 𝑁 ∗ = 950𝑘𝑁
𝜱𝑵𝒕 = 𝛷0.85𝑘𝑡 𝐴𝑛 𝑓𝑢 = 0.9 ∗ 0.85 ∗ 1 ∗
NOT OK!
3900 ∗ 410 ∗ 0.001 = 1223.2𝑘𝑁
This means that the gusset plate will fail.
∴ 𝜱𝑵𝒕 = 1125𝑘𝑁 > 𝑁 ∗ = 950𝑘𝑁
However, since the gusset plate of the

magnitude 150*12 will fail, we are to
substitute a new plate that is more robust to
the axial load.
Step 2: Check the Bolt Capacity Step 4: Checking Edge Distance, ae.

Conclusion
The above axial tension is not required as
bolts are not in tension. Although, the 8M20 8.8 bolts and the EA 2-
200*200*16 connections checks out under
OR, Calculating total Shear the axial load, the gusset plate given (i.e.,
150*12 – plate) did not. However, though
𝛷𝑉𝑓 = 2 ∗ 92.6 ∗ 8 = 1481𝑘𝑁 > 𝑁 ∗ =
the iterative method of trail and error by
950𝑘𝑁
running tests of different plate size, we have
OK! managed to obtain a new gusset plate size
of 200*25 – plate. Hence, the tie EA
connections of the plate as well as the bolt
checks out.
