Q.3(a) An RCC circular columns have a diameter of 300 mm and it is reinforced with 8 steel
bars. The total area of steel bars is 2513 mm2. The column carries a load of 250 kN. If the
modulus of elasticity for steel is 18 times that of concrete, find the stresses in concrete and steel.
[10 Marks]

Solution: Steel bars

Given,
300 mm
Diameter of column (D)=300 mm
2
Total area of steel bars (As)= 2513 mm

Load carried by the column (P)= 250 kN

Concrete
Now,

Cross-sectional area of column (A)= = = 70685.83 𝑚𝑚

∴ Area of concrete (AC)=A- As=70685.83 − 2513 = 68172.834 𝑚𝑚

Since, the steel bars and concrete shorten by the same amount under the compressive load,

∴ 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑖𝑛 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑙 𝑏𝑎𝑟𝑠 = 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑖𝑛 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑒

𝐸
𝑜𝑟, 𝜎 = ∗𝜎
𝐸

𝑜𝑟, 𝜎 = 18 ∗ 𝜎 (𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑒, 𝐸 = 18𝐸 )

Also, Load shared by steel bars + Load shared by concrete by concrete= Load applied to column

𝑜𝑟, 𝑃 + 𝑃 = 𝑃

𝑜𝑟, 𝜎 ∗ 𝐴 + 𝜎 ∗ 𝐴 = 250 ∗ 10 𝑁

𝑜𝑟, 18 ∗ 𝜎 ∗ 2513 + 𝜎 ∗ 68172.834 = 250 ∗ 10 (𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑒, 𝜎 = 18 ∗ 𝜎 )

𝑜𝑟, 113406.834 ∗ 𝜎 = 250 ∗ 10

HIST_SOM_CH_4_Lecture 22

250 ∗ 10 𝑁 𝑁
𝑜𝑟, 𝜎 = = 2.204 = 2.204 = 2.204 ∗ 10 𝑁/𝑚
113406.834 𝑚𝑚 1

∴ 𝜎 = 2.204 𝑀𝑝𝑎 (𝐴𝑛𝑠. )

Also,

𝜎 = 18 ∗ 𝜎

𝑜𝑟, 𝜎 = 18 ∗ 2.204

∴ 𝜎 = 39.672 𝑀𝑝𝑎 (𝐴𝑛𝑠. )

Q.2(b) A compound bar consists of circular rod of steel of diameter 15 mm rigidly fitted into a
copper bar of internal diameter 15 mm and thickness 5 mm. If the bar is subjected to a load of
200 kN, Find the stresses developed in the two materials. 200 kN [10 Marks]

E for copper = 120 kN/m
[Ans: stress in steel=547.63 N/mm^2,

Q.2(b) Two brass rods and one steel rod together support a load as shown in figure. If the stress
in brass and steel are not to exceed 60 N/mm 2 and 120 N/mm2, find the safe load that can be
supported. [10 Marks]
Take,
Esteel =2*105 N/mm2, X-sectional area of steel=1500 mm2
Ebrass=1*105 N/mm2, X-sectional area of brass=1000 mm2

Brass Steel Brass 1000 mm

700 mm

Solution:

Each rod will be compressed to the same extent. Let each rod contract by ∆𝐿, then

∆𝐿 = 𝑒 ∗ 𝐿 = 𝑒 ∗ 𝐿

(𝑒 and 𝑒 being strains in steel and brass respectively)

𝑒 ∗𝐿 =𝑒 ∗𝐿

𝑒 𝐿 1000
𝑜𝑟, = = = 0.588
𝑒 𝐿 1700

Let the stresses in steel and brass be 𝜎 and 𝜎 respectively. Then,

𝜎 = 𝑒 ∗ 𝐸 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜎 = 𝑒 ∗ 𝐸

𝜎 𝑒 𝐸 2 ∗ 10
= ∗ = 0.588 ∗ = 0.588 ∗ 2 = 1.176
𝜎 𝑒 𝐸 1 ∗ 10

∴ 𝜎 = 1.176𝜎

Given that,

Permissible stress in brass (𝜎 , ) = 60 𝑁/𝑚𝑚

HIST_SOM_CH_4_Lecture 22

Permissible stress in steel (𝜎 , ) = 120 𝑁/𝑚𝑚

If the steel is permitted to reach its safe stress of 120 𝑁/𝑚𝑚 .The corresponding stress in brass
will be

= = 102.04 𝑁/𝑚𝑚 which exceeds the safe stress of 60 𝑁/𝑚𝑚 .

.

Therefore, Let brass be allowed to reach its safe stress 60 𝑁/𝑚𝑚 .The corresponding stress in
steel will be =60*1.176=70.56 𝑁/𝑚𝑚 (Which is less than 120 𝑁/𝑚𝑚 ,Hence OK)

∴ 𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑠𝑎𝑓𝑒 𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑 (𝑃) = 𝐿𝑜𝑎𝑑 𝑜𝑛 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑙 + 𝐿𝑜𝑎𝑑 𝑜𝑛 𝑏𝑟𝑎𝑠𝑠

=𝑃 +𝑃

=𝜎 ∗𝐴 +𝜎 ∗𝐴

= 70.56 ∗ 1500 + 60 ∗ 2 ∗ 1000

= 225840 𝑁

= 225.84 𝑘𝑁 (𝐴𝑛𝑠. )

Hence, the safe load that can be supported is 225.84 𝑘𝑁.
