Final Self Reflection

First day of my internship at Ekaimai International School was full of excitement. I was

ready to learn everything I could. My homeroom teacher is Mrs Emilene, Math teacher is Mrs

Shihara and Language Art teacher is Mrs Ethel. My home room teacher teaches Health class and

Science class. As I was doing internship for three months at Grade 5. I learned so many things

such as how to be firm with students and manage the classroom, and the time. Each teacher has

their own ways to take control the classroom and materials. Every week I have to go each

different class to teach different subjects. So I learned different strategy from different teachers.

Teachers and students are using Plus Portal for grading and taking notice from students or

teachers.

Before I started teaching, I was assisting and observing what teacher are doing. What I

learned from Mrs Emilene was taking care of students and handle the misbehave students. And I

also learned how to use my voice firmly without shouting. When I was with Mrs Ethel, I learned

how to maintain teacher’s dignity with students. She told me that first day and first lesson of the

class was very important for teacher. Teacher should be firm and should act like respectful

person who know how to keep their word. I learned how to use Socrative.com to give the quiz

and tests. It’s easier to make assessment; it can see everything what students are doing and

teacher can monitor the students to log out when the time is up.

Health was the first subject that I started teaching in my internship. Every morning I

started with reading devotional thought. Then I started the lesson. I was always so and nervous
excited in my first lesson, so my voice was not very loud. And students were also observing me.

However, I felt confident after teaching 15 minutes because I was able to engage with students

by using questions and answer strategy to interact with student. When I was teaching, two or

three students were very active and they always want to talk and disturb other, so I had to remind

the classroom rules and gave punishment if they were still talking. In Grade, they had the rules

like they should not speak in the class unless teacher allowed or students need to raise their hand

to get permission. If they don’t follow those rules. They need to pay fine which would spend for

the farewell party at the end of the year. That is a reason students followed the rules in every

class. Another thing that I have learned in Health class was creating quiz and marking the test

and quiz papers.

In Language Art class, I taught writing paragraph such as narrative, expository,

descriptive and persuasive paragraph. Actually writing was not my favorite subjects, but when I

taught I felt like I can tach it too. It might be because I was well planned with my lesson and I

can interact well with what students already known. And I could give activity which students

enjoy. And I usually focus on what student had learned and what students need to remember and

understand. And I also reviewed previous lesson before I started the new. First class was always

made me nervous because I worried that what I had planned the lesson for students might be

easier and students already learned. Fortunately, students were not aware of the lesson and I can

ask different questions to interact with students.

As Math was my favorite subject, I could manage well to plan the lesson and engage with

students. However, I did not have enough time to do other activities because teacher had her own

schedule to finish the lesson and give classwork in the class. What I did was asking questions for

their prior knowledge what they had already learned and known about it when they are studying
in Grade 4. I noticed that students knew how to solve the problem when I gave the questions

with numbers, but they are struggled when they got word problems. Therefore, I usually used

word problems for the lesson as an example and let students to use strategy and find the solution.

Then I explained everyone. For Math teacher, she used Khan academy for giving extra exercise

for students. As she taught me how to give quiz or test to students, I was able to organize the

exam. What I did was I told students to sit alphabetically and brig their pad paper to take the test.

Then students draw the line by the center of the pad paper. Students list down the numbers for

answer according to the numbers of questions on left side of pad paper. Students solve the

problems on right side of the pad paper. After they took the test, students pass the answer paper

to the front and put the question papers between the board for the next class. Students who are in

the front line arrange the answer paper according to numerical order. Submit the answer paper to

the teacher. By submitting numerical order, it helped me a lot when I copied the score to the

scorebook after marking because it was arranged by the numerical number. One more thing that I

learned in Math class was creating questions on Google classroom which I learned it when the

online class started again. Outside of the class time, I also assisted teachers like creating

PowerPoint for Health lessons, creating quiz and tests, and creating course outlines for Math.

I felt satisfied with teaching Grade 5 in Eakaimai International School because I had

learned different ways to manage the classroom and present the lessons in effective ways. For

myself, I need to improve in lecturing because my tone was always low. In addition, I need to

manage my time to finish my lesson on time because when I was reviewing previous lesson, it

took times and when I taught new lesson, I felt like it was not enough to include every lesson that

I planned. Hopefully, what I learned in the University and internship will help me when I teach

in my old school called Minmahaw school.
