II. Project Summary

Project BASS-SLK was born out of the proponent’s desire to help improve the academic
performance of the learners across grade levels through self-learning kits. These materials
can be used to remediate, enrich, and reinforce learning. Aligned with the essential
competencies, SLKs will be developed following DepEd prescribed format.

Teachers will be enjoined to take part in this project by contributing their resources.
Quality assurance will be done to check on the content, language, and layout of the learning
kits.

This project will be done year-round as the needs of the pupils are all throughout the
year. SLKs will be distributed among the pupils in needs of them and will be accomplished by
the children with the aid of their home-based teachers, their parents.

Sources of funds will be the PTA, alumni, and private individuals. Considering the
number of the target beneficiaries, this project would need PhP 25,000.00 for the
reproduction of the SLKs.

III. Project Background

This new normal period of education truly poses unique, distinctive and one of a kind
learning experiences for the school-aged children. This is because of the sudden shift in the
learning methods into the use of learning delivery modalities. The traditional and time-tested
face to face instruction has been temporarily disallowed to give way for safety and security
measures and practices. Suddenly, home becomes the temporary learning setting and
environment for the learners who are adversely affected by the global and educational crisis.
With all these huge and serious adjustments in the education system, the usual and
typical instructional practices of teaching basic and fundamental literacy, numeracy, and
scientific skills have been temporarily replaced by the use of various learning modalities. These
competencies provide the foundation of the early cognitive and academic development of the
early grade learners. All these fundamental abilities need to be taught, trained and honed
among these young learners in the earliest schooling stage and levels possible in order to
provide for their early literacy, numeracy, and scientific foundation and academic readiness.
With the presence of this global and educational crisis, the proponent realizes the
possibility of further increase in the academic problems and difficulties among learners,
particularly in this period of education when face to face reading instruction, tutorials, trainings
and mentoring offered by the teachers are temporarily restricted and limited for disease
prevention and safety purposes. But just like the other educators, the proponent is driven by the
unfading commitment and motivation to foster education through this project which will
provide accessible and quality materials to address learning gaps among young learners. This
advocacy is believed to be highly attainable through the relevant utilization of the learning
delivery modalities most especially the modular learning modality.
The project proponent realizes that there is one thing that needs to be ensured in order
to make this work effectively for the elementary graders and it is the meaningful partnership
and collaboration of teachers with the parents. Parents are believed to serve as the major and
direct sources of mentoring services in teaching the children subjected to home-based, distance
learning system and use of modular learning tools. These parents only need proper and
sufficient guidance, advice and support from the teachers in order for them to attain the best
parental mentoring practices and services that the children need in order to cope well with
challenges of new normal approach to instruction. Hence, self-learning kits will be designed with
all these factors in mind.

IV. Project Objectives

Project BASS-SLK has the following objectives:
1. Craft and reproduce quality-assured self-learning kits.
2. Address concerns on least mastered skills in the different learning areas through SLKs.
3. Promote collaboration among teachers through sharing of resources and expertise.
