“Dad, what did you tell them? Did you scold them?”
“Ah hija, I just told them to talk to you in English.” Ang mahinang
sabi ng Don.
“Oh, no… hija, Filipino is just for the ignorant, for the poor but not
for the rich like us who belong to high society,” ang pagmamataas na sabi
ng Senyor.
Lumipas ang mga araw at isang umaga, nakita ni Christine ang mga
batang kasinggulang niya sa harap ng kanilang mansiyon.
“Hi, do you like to play? I have many toys. Come, let’s play.”
Natutuwang anyaya nito sa mga bata.
“Pe-pero senyorita……”
“Oh! This is a nice place. Look at the rice fields, Totoy, they sway to
and fro as the wind blows. The air is so cool and fresh. Oh! What a lovely
place!”
“The water is cool but the current is very strong. And the stones are
slippery,” sabi nito habang naglalaro sa tubig.
“Help! Help! Help! Help me, Totoy! The current is carrying me!” ang
malakas na sigaw ni Christine. Hindi tuminag si Totoy sa tinatayuan nito sa
pag-aakalang labis lang ang katuwaan ni Christine. Sa kabutihang palad
dumating pala si Senyor Leon at hinanap ang anak. Humahangos itong
tinulungan si Christine dahil narinig pala niya ang paghingi nito ng saklolo.
Nang umahon ang mag-ama sa tubig ay binalingan ng Senyor si
Totoy.
