Let Us Learn

A wonderful day to you little scientist! In this module, you will learn the
concepts of simple electrical circuits. You shall learn how to determine the
effects of changing the number or types of component in a circuit.

Specifically, you are expected to:

• Describe the effects of changing the number or type of component in a
circuit;
• Construct series and parallel circuit.

Let Us Try!

Choose the letter of the correct answer and write this on a separate sheet of
paper.

1. What happens to a circuit if wires are cut off?

A. The circuit will still work.
B. The circuit will not work.
C. The circuit is still complete.
D. None of the above

2. What will be the result if we add another bulb to a parallel circuit?

A. all the light goes off
B. the flow of electricity will be stopped
C. the wires in the circuit will become hot
D. all the lights will have the same brightness.

3. What happens when wires in a circuit are long?

A. the bulb will explode
B. the bulb will not light up
C. the bulb will still light up
D. it will make the battery weak

4. What would happen if we remove one bulb from a three-bulb series

circuit?
A. The battery will become stronger.
B. The other bulbs will get dimmer.
C. The other bulbs will get brighter.
D. The other bulbs will go out.

1
5. Which of these will make the light bulb glow brighter?
A. double the length of the wires
B. add more batteries in the circuit
C. remove the battery from the circuit
D. make another circuit with complete components

Let Us Study

Observe each illustration and answer the questions that follows.

What do you think will happen when one bulb of the series Christmas light
is busted? Why?

__________________________________________________________________________

Living Room Kitchen

What happens to the lighted bulbs in our house when we switch off one lighted
part only? Why?

___________________________________________________________________________

2
In this lesson, you will be asked to check and look around your house and
write down your observation by answering the questions below.

1. How many appliances do you have?

2. How many are currently plugged into the outlets?
3. How does electricity flow to your appliances?

The number of appliances you have at home shows how important electricity
is. To understand better how electricity flows/works, let us explore together
and learn more about circuits.

Now that you have done the preliminary activity, please be prepared for the
new lesson.

Below are illustrations of 2 circuits. Study and compare the two types of
circuits.

In the first illustration, bulbs are connected one after the other in one
chain. This shows a series circuit. In a series, electric current flows through
a single path, so when one bulb is loosened or busted, all the other bulbs
in this circuit will not light anymore. The loosened or busted bulb breaks
or opens the pathway, so electricity cannot flow through.

3
In the second illustration, it shows light bulbs with different loops. Each
bulb is a part of a different circuit. This is an example of a parallel circuit. In
a parallel circuit, its parts are arranged in several paths. So when one bulb
is loosened, taken or burned out, the other bulbs still light up. This is
because each bulb has its own pathway. A break in one pathway does not
make all the lights go out because electricity can still flow through the other
pathways.

You may ask your parents what kind of circuit you have in your home. You
may also ask them the reason why.

If you use series circuit in your home, what do you think will happen if you
turn off one bulb? All the other bulbs will be turned off because, in a series
circuit, there is only one path of electricity. Thus, the most appropriate circuit
for homes is the parallel circuit. In such circuit, each light and electrical
device has its own path of electricity that, if you turn off one of them, the
others will still function.

Let Us Practice
At this point, you will construct a simple circuit. Read and understand the
instructions below and be sure to prepare the needed materials before doing
the activity.

Precautionary Measures:
• Guidance of parents or any adult in the house is needed.
• Be extra careful in handling the bulbs and other materials.
• Use battery for the source of your circuit.
• Avoid water when working with electricity.
• Never use damaged material.

Activity 1: Circuit Making

Materials Needed:
• 4 small light bulbs
• batteries
• two 1/8 illustration board
• electrical tape
• two 1.5V batteries
• pieces of electrical wires

4
Procedures:
1. Design a series and parallel circuits as shown in the diagram below.

2. Lay the circuits on the illustration boards. You now have two set ups.
(Setup 1 and 2). Label the first board as Series Circuit and the other one
as Parallel Circuit.

3. Try doing the changes as asked on the table and observe what happens to
the bulbs in both setups. Record your answer on the table below.

Changes to do on both setups Setup 1 Setup 2

1. Remove one bulb from the two setups.

2. Add another bulb to both of your setups
3. Double the length of the wires in both setups

Questions:
1. What may happen if the filament of one of the bulbs in your first setup
melts? Why?
2. What may happen if the filament of one of the bulbs in your second setup
melts? Why?
3. What can you conclude from the activity about the effects of changing the
number or type of components in a circuit?

In making a simple circuit, it is important to observe strictly the

precautionary measures for one’s own safety.

A circuit is composed of the bulb, the battery, the switch, and the wire that
connects all the components. As you change the number or type of
components in a circuit, the brightness of the bulb is affected.

Let Us Reflect

Imagining a world without any use of electricity is very difficult these days.
Small things like a study lamp to big things like a plane, requires electricity
to operate. Thus, making electricity very important anywhere.

Even in our own household, many appliances which are simple to use and
made for the convenience of our day to day activities, use electricity to
function.
