Composite material

Composition of composites
Most composites are made up of just two materials. One material (the matrix or binder) surrounds and
binds together a cluster of fibres or fragments of a much stronger material (the reinforcement). In the
case of mud bricks, the two roles are taken by the mud and the straw; in concrete, by the cement and
the aggregate; in a piece of wood, by the cellulose and the lignin. In fibreglass, the reinforcement is
provided by fine threads or fibres of glass, often woven into a sort of cloth, and the matrix is a plastic.
ประเภท composites
1. Metal-matrix composite
2. Ceramic-matrix composite
3. Polymer-matrix composite Laongdaw Techawinyutham 45
Composite material
A composite, in the present context, is a multiphase material that is artificially made, as opposed to one that occurs or
forms naturally. In addition, the constituent phases must be chemically dissimilar and separated by a distinct interface.
Thus, most metallic alloys and many ceramics do not fit this definition because their multiple phases are formed as a
consequence of natural phenomena.
In designing composite materials, scientists and engineers have ingeniously combined various metals, ceramics, and
polymers to produce a new generation of extraordinary materials. Most composites have been created to improve
combinations of mechanical characteristics such as stiffness, toughness, and ambient and high-temperature strength.

Why use composites?
The greatest advantage of composite materials is strength and stiffness combined with
lightness. By choosing an appropriate combination of reinforcement and matrix material,
manufacturers can produce properties that exactly fit the requirements for a particular
structure for a particular purpose.
It is common now to find wing and tail sections, propellers and rotor blades made from
advanced composites, along with much of the internal structure and fittings. The airframes
of some smaller aircraft are made entirely from composites, as are the wing, tail and body
panels of large commercial aircraft.

Laongdaw Techawinyutham 53
Composite in aircraft applications
The composites are less likely than metals (such as aluminium) to break up completely under stress. A
small crack in a piece of metal can spread very rapidly with very serious consequences (especially in the
case of aircraft). The fibres in a composite act to block the widening of any small crack and to share the
stress around. The right composites also stand up well to heat and corrosion. This makes them ideal for
use in products that are exposed to extreme environments such as boats, chemical-handling equipment
and spacecraft. In general, composite materials are very durable.
A composite such as carbon fiber is stronger and lighter than aluminum, but it also is more costly and has a lower
conductivity; aircraft parts prone to lightning strikes need a lightning protection mesh or coating. Composites also are
more damage-tolerant than metals, but internal defects and damage are harder to detect. Fiberglass is often used for
smaller components such as fairings or wing tips. Carbon fiber, which is stiffer and stronger than glass fibers, may be used
for structural components such as stabilizers, flight controls, or wings—even the fuselage.

Composite material
• Another advantage of composite materials is that they provide design flexibility.
Composites can be molded into complex shapes – a great asset when producing
something like a surfboard or a boat hull.
• Additionally, a lot of work is currently being directed towards development of composite
materials made from waste products, such as agricultural waste, building materials or
plastic drink containers.
• The downside of composites is usually the cost. Although manufacturing processes are
often more efficient when composites are used, the raw materials are expensive.

Classification of composites
Laongdaw Techawinyutham 56
Particle-reinforced composites
1. Particle-reinforced composites (วัสดุผสมเสริมแรงด้ วยอนุภาค)
• Dispersion-strengthened composites
• Large-particle composites
2 Fiber-reinforced composites (วัสดุเสริมแรงด้ วยเส้ นใย)
3. Structural composites (วัสดุผสมชนิดโครงสร้ าง)
Laongdaw Techawinyutham 57
วัสดุผสมทีเ่ พิม่ ความแข็งแรงโดยการกระจายอนุภาค
1.1 Dispersion-strengthened composite
- Metals and metal alloys may be strengthened and hardened by the uniform
dispersion of several volume percent of fine particles of a very hard and inert
material. Diameters between 0.01 & 0.1 µm
- Dispersion phase may be metallic or nonmetallic: oxide
- The strengthening mechanism interactions between particles and
dislocations as precipitation hardening. Inhibit dislocation motion
Arts of mechanism interactions between particles and dislocations
• The dislocations in a material can interact with the precipitate atoms in one
of two ways.
• If the precipitate atoms are small, the
dislocations would cut through them. As a
result, new surfaces of the particle would
get exposed to the matrix and the particle-
matrix interfacial energy would increase.
• For larger precipitate particles, looping or
bowing of the dislocations would occur
and result in dislocations getting longer.

1.2. Large-particle composites
1.2. Large-particle composites (วัสดุเสริมแรงด้ วยเม็ดผงหรื ออนุภาคขนาดใหญ่ )
o วัสดุผสมที่เป็ นเม็ดผงจะประกอบไปด้วยอนุภาคขนาดใหญ่ ที่ไม่มีผลต่อการเกิดหรื อการเลื่อนผ่านดิส

1.2. Large-particle composites
CERMETS
• Ceramic-metal composites
• Most common cermets is the cemented carbide
Particles Matrix
CONCRETE
A common example of large particle composite in which both matrix &
dispersed phases are ceramic materials.
It composed of;
Cement (the matrix: the binding medium)
Sand and gravel (the particulates)
Laongdaw Techawinyutham 62
1.2. Large-particle composites
Example for Large-particle composite
Concrete: cement is a matrix, sand and gravel are the particulate.
Another well-known composite is concrete. Here aggregate (small stones or gravel) is bound
together by cement. Concrete has good strength under compression, and it can be made stronger under
tension by adding metal rods, wires, mesh or cables to the composite (so creating reinforced concrete).

Fiber-reinforced composites
The fiber phase
Fiber can be divided into 3 groups
1. Whiskers
- very thin single crystals that have extremely large
length-to-diameter ratio
- have a high degree of crystalline perfection or
defect free
- have high strength
Example: graphite, silicon carbide, aluminium oxide
2. Fiber
- either polycrystalline or amorphous
- have small diameter
- either be ceramics or polymer
3. Wire
- have relatively large diameters
Example: wires- steel, molybdenum, tungsten: used as a
radial steel reinforcement in automobile tire.
The matrix phase can be a metal, polymer or ceramic

These sandwich composites combine high strength, and particularly bending stiffness, with
low weight. Other methods involve simply laying down several alternating layers of
different substances (for example, graphene and metal) to make the composite.

Choosing materials for the matrix
• For the matrix, many modern composites use thermosetting or
thermosoftening plastics (also called resins). The plastics
are polymers that hold the reinforcement together and help to
determine the physical properties of the end product.
• Thermosetting plastics are liquid when prepared but harden and
become rigid (ie, they cure) when they are heated. These plastics
also resist wear and attack by chemicals making them very durable,
even when exposed to extreme environments.

Choosing materials for the
reinforcement
• Carbon fibre composites are light and much stronger than glass fibres, but are also more
expensive. Of the two, graphite fibres are cheaper and easier to produce than carbon
nanotubes. They are used in aircraft structures and in high performance sporting equipment
like golf clubs, tennis rackets and rowing boats, and are increasingly being used instead of
metals to repair or replace damaged bones.
• Even stronger (and more costly) than carbon fibres are threads of boron. Nanotubes of boron
nitride have the additional advantage of being much more resistant to heat than carbon fibres.
They also possess piezoelectric qualities, which means they can generate electricity when
physical pressure is applied to them, such as twisting or stretching.
• Polymers can also be used as the reinforcement material in composites. For example, Kevlar,
originally developed to replace steel in radial tyres but best known for its use in bullet-proof
vests and helmets, is a polymer fibre that is immensely strong and adds toughness to a
composite. It is used as the reinforcement in composite products that require lightweight and
reliable construction (eg, structural body parts of an aircraft). Even stronger than Kevlar is a
substance made from a combination of graphene and carbon nanotubes.

Choosing materials for the
reinforcement
Fibreglass are very strong under
tension but they are also brittle and
will snap if bent sharply. The matrix
not only holds the fibres together, it
also protects them from damage by
sharing any stress among them. The
matrix is soft enough to be shaped
with tools, and can be softened by
suitable solvents to allow repairs to be
made. A thin sheet of fibreglass is very
strong. It is also quite light, which is an
advantage in many applications.

• The latest Airbus and Boeing passenger jets flying today are made primarily from
advanced composite materials such as carbon fibre reinforced plastic — extremely
lightweight, durable materials that reduce the overall weight of the plane by as much as
20% compared to aluminium-bodied planes. Such lightweight airframes translate directly
to fuel savings, which is a major point in advanced composites’ favour.
• But composite materials are also surprisingly vulnerable: While aluminium can withstand
relatively large impacts before cracking, the many layers in composites can break apart
due to relatively small impacts — a drawback that is considered the material’s Achilles’
heel.
• MIT aerospace engineers have found a way to bond composite layers in such a way that
the resulting material is substantially stronger and more resistant to damage than other
advanced composites.
• The researchers fastened the layers of composite materials together using carbon
nanotubes — atom-thin rolls of carbon that, despite their microscopic stature, are
incredibly strong. They embedded tiny “forests” of carbon nanotubes within a glue-like
polymer matrix, then pressed the matrix between layers of carbon fibre composites. The
nanotubes, resembling tiny, vertically aligned stitches, worked themselves within the
crevices of each composite layer, serving as a scaffold to hold the layers together.

30% stronger, withstanding greater forces
before breaking apart. It may lead to stronger,
lighter airplane parts — particularly those that
require nails or bolts, which can crack
conventional composites.

turbine-blades/

• Fraunhofer researchers have partnered with industry experts to develop highly durable thermoplastic
foams and composites that make the blades lighter and recyclable.
• Offshore wind turbines are becoming ever larger, and the transportation, installation, disassembly and
disposal of their gigantic rotor blades are presenting operators with new challenges. it is essential to
develop lightweight systems with high material strength. By improving the design and materials used,
they hope to reduce the weight of the blades and thus increase their service life.
• These days, rotor blades for wind turbines are largely made by hand from thermosetting resin systems.
These, however, don’t permit melting, and they aren’t suitable for material recycling. At best, granulated
thermoset plastic waste is recycled as filler in simple applications.
• For the outer shell of the rotor blade, as well as for segments of the inner supporting structure, the
project partners use sandwich materials made from thermoplastic foams and fibre-reinforced plastics. In
general, carbon-fibre-reinforced thermoplastics are used for the areas of the rotor blade that bear the
greatest load, while glass fibres reinforce the less stressed areas. For the sandwich core, Rapp and his
team are developing thermoplastic foams that are bonded with cover layers made of fibre-reinforced
thermoplastics in sandwich design. This combination improves the mechanical strength, efficiency,
durability and longevity of the rotor blade.
• The ICT foams provide better properties than existing material systems, thus enabling completely new
applications – for instance in the automotive, aviation and shipping industries. In vehicles,
manufacturers have been using foam materials in visors and seating, for example, but not for load-
bearing structures.
• Yet another advantage is that thermoplastic foams are more easily available than renewable sandwich
core materials such as balsa wood. Laongdaw Techawinyutham

• This special commemorative series has been created to honour the centenary of its. The
body of the Centenario is made completely from carbon fibre composites. All the
sections from the front bonnet, scissor door panels and open top roof line are super
lightweight and are designed for aerodynamic superiority. Air flows through ducts within
the front headlight casings and others in the side-skirts and around the wheel arches,
improving airflow to the rear radiators and providing optimized cooling.
• The Pirelli ‘pzero’ tyres have been specially developed for the rear-wheel steering
system, sit on front/rear rims in forged and milled aluminium. The spokes’ fan shape,
accented in carbon fibre, mask ducts extracting hot air from the carbon ceramic brakes,
finished with a central-locking wheel nut sporting the Lamborghini shield. Post-test
