Experiment # 5
Title: Iodine test
I. Learning Objectives:
 To test for the presence of starch.
 Observe how the iodine test works.
 Determine the purpose of iodine tests.

II. Material:
A. Chemicals/Reagents:
 Starch
 Iodine reagent
B. Glasswares:
 Test tube
 Test Tube rack
 Dropper
III. Procedure:
1. Put the starch sample in the test tube and place it in a test tube holder. Mix it well.
2. Fill the dropper with the iodine reagent.
3. Put one drop of iodine reagent into the test tube. Observe.

IV. Result and Observation:

The test tube is filled with a sample with the starch present. Then, the iodine
reagent was added to the mix and it turned into a dark blue color.

V. Discussion:
The dark blue color that the solution of starch and iodine reagent turned into
indicates the presence of starch.

VI. Conclusion:
The presence of starch in a sample may be determined using an iodine test. Starch
may be distinguished from monosaccharides, disaccharides, and other polysaccharides
using the iodine test. To differentiate between starch, glycogen, and carbs, the iodine test
is utilized. The molecule of starch is coiled due to its structure. Iodine reagent, which
forms a blue-colored complex when it interacts with these coiled molecules. The
presence of starch is indicated by a positive iodine test, therefore if the color changes to
dark blue, blue, or light blue, it is a positive result.
