Students must be able to solve problems efficiently and accurately. These word problems may require one
or two steps to solve using addition and/or subtraction. The students must be able to represent the problem in a
diagram and justify that their solution is reasonable.
For example:
There are 45 pupilsin the school library. After an hour, 9 pupils left, then 12 pupils walked in. How many
pupils are in the library now?
Let us solve the problem together and follow the steps:
UNDERSTAND
a. What is being asked?
-- HOW MANY PUPILS LEFT THE LIBRARY?
PLAN
What operation will you use?
1. Subtraction- to find out how many pupils left?
2. Addition- to find how many pupils are in the library.
SOLVE
35 -pupils in the library
- 9 -pupils left
26 - total number of pupils in the library
CHECK
We are going to use the opposite of the operations we used here: 38 - 12 = 26 and 26 + 9 = 35. So, the
answer is correct. Therefore, there are 38 pupils in the library.
