LEARNING PLAN ON EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE

Grade 11 – Core Subject
I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard The learners demonstrate an understanding of the Earth’s
internal structure
B. Performance Standard The learners shall be able to conduct a survey to assess the
possible geologic hazards that your community may
experience.
C. Learning Competencies The learners will be able to:
(Write the LC Code for 1. Identify the layers of the Earth (crust, mantle, and
each) core). (S11/12ES-Ia-e-7)
2. Differentiate the layers of the Earth. (S11/12ES-Ia-
e-8)
D. Learning Objectives At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
1. identify the different layers of the Earth;
2. design a simple model of the layers of the Earth; and
3. appreciate the importance of knowing the layers of
the Earth.
II. CONTENT
Content Origin and Structure of the Earth

IV. PROCEDURE
A. Reviewing previous  Review of the Previous Lesson focusing on the Sub
lesson or presenting the layers of the Earth using the KAHOOT GAME
new lesson (ELICIT) APPLICATION

Instructions: Using the smartphones of the students, the

teacher will give the game pin (indicated by the image
below) to the students and the virtual game shall
commence:

B. Establishing a purpose Activity 1: Color My Egg (Group Activity)

for the lesson
Materials:
(ENGAGE)
Hardboiled egg
Coloring materials
Image Map of the Province of Capiz
3 pieces of metastrips with pentel pen
(http://www.capiz.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=art
icle&id=76&Itemid=76 )

Procedures:
1. Illustrate the image of the given map in the egg
shell. Highlight the bodies of water that surrounds
the province.
2. Answer the following questions in the metastrips:
a. What structures have you drawn?
b. What are the representations of those
structures?
3. Afterwards, break the shell and slice it up at the
center. What are your noticeable observations?
Write this on the metastrips.

C. Presenting Process the following previously set questions in the

examples/instances of “Color My Egg” Activity:
the new lesson a. What structures have you drawn
(EXPLORE) b. What are the representations of those structures?

Focus the processing in the concept of geosphere as one of

the subsystems that comprised the earth. Afterwards,
show to the class the picture of the geosphere.

D. Discussing new Priming Question: The Earth is made up of 3 main layers.

concepts and practicing What are those?
new skills #1
(EXPLAIN)
E. Discussing new Crust
concepts and practicing • Thinnest layer of the Earth that ranges from only 2
new skills #2 miles in some areas of the ocean floor to 75 miles
(EXPLAIN) deep under mountains
• Made up of large amounts of silicon and aluminum
• Two types of crust: oceanic crust and continental
crust
• Composed of plates on which the continents and
oceans rest

Fig. 1: Image of the Crust in the Slide Deck

Mantle
• Solid but capable of flow (like hot asphalt or fudge)
• Thickest layer of the Earth (making up 70% of the
Earth’s mass)
• The hot material (magma) in the mantle rises to
the top of the mantle, cools, then sinks, reheats, and
rises again. These convection currents cause
changes in the Earth’s surface

Fig. 2: Video Presentation of the Mantle

Outer Core
• Molten (liquid) metal that is about 4,700°C
(8,500°F)
• Located about 1,800 miles beneath the crust and is
about 1,400 miles thick
• Composed of the melted metals nickel and iron
Inner Core
• Solid sphere composed mostly of iron
• It is believed to be as hot as 6,650°C (12,000°F)
• Heat in the core is probably generated by the
radioactive decay of uranium and other elements
• It is solid because of the pressure from the outer
core, mantle, and crust compressing it
tremendously

Key Concept: Temperature, Density and Pressure increases

as depth increases

F. Developing mastery Activity 2: Your Face Looks Familiar! (Group Activity)

(leads to Formative
Assessment 3) Materials:
Any clean locally found materials in your place
Adhesives
Coloring materials/art materials

Procedures:
1. Using the materials brought, conceptualize your
own model of the layers of the Earth.
2. Construct your earth’s layer model. Make sure that
the difference between each layer will be clear in
your own model.
3. Choose one reporter to present the model in the
class.

Note: The rubric below will be used in evaluating the

output of the students
G. Finding practical Elaborate and explain to the class the importance of
applications of concepts knowing the different layers of the Earth. Relate the
and skills in daily living formation of some significant landforms found in the area
(ELABORATE) such as Mt. Panginraon in Dumalag, Capiz and significant
geologic activit(ies) such as the occurrence of earthquake
to the layers of the Earth. Let the students share their own
experiences during an earthquake.

H. Making generalization Ask the learners the following questions:

and abstraction or
about the lesson  Identify the 3 layers of the Earth.
 Differentiate the 3 layers of the Earth

I. Evaluating learning Activity 3: My Journey to the Center of the Earth

(EVALUATE)  This is given individually to students. The following
is the instructions given:
Imagine you are going to take a journey to the
center of the earth (like the trailer you have watched
but more accurate). Write a short story below
describing your journey. Include the layers of the
earth and description of each layer as well as its
importance. Write your answer in a one whole sheet
of paper.

output of the students:
J. Additional activities for Instructions: Answer the following in your assignment
application or notebook.
remediation
(EXTEND) 1. What is a Mineral?
2. How can you classify a matter to be a mineral?
3. State the physical and chemical properties of
minerals

V. REMARKS
VI. REFLECTIONS
A. No. of learners who earned
80% in the evaluation
