Answer Key
1. What two properties of a material comprise density?

Correct answer: mass and volume

2. Which of the following are units of density?

a. g/mL b. g/cm3 c. kg/L d. g/mol

The only requirement for something to be counted as a density measurement is that it be a

unit of mass divided by a unit of volume.
Correct answer: a, b, and c are all masses divided by volume. Remember: cm3 is a
measurement of volume (1 cm3 = 1 mL).

3. Calculate the density of the following. Report your answer in g/mL.

a. 50.0 kg in 25.0 mL
Since we need to report our answers in g/mL, we need to convert 50 kg to grams.

50.0 kg 1,000 g = 5.00 x 104 g

1 kg

!"##
Density =

).++ - .+! /
Density =
0).+ !1

Correct answer: 2.00 x 103 g/mL

7

b. 85.0 g in 50.0 cm3
!"##
Density =
$%&'!(

2).+ /
Density =
)+.+ 3!"

Correct answer: 1.70 g/mL (remember 1 cm3 = 1 mL, so no need to convert anything!)

4. Which one of the following has the highest density?

a. 5.0 g in a 100 mL container

b. 120.0 g in a 1,000mL container
c. 450.0 kg in a 15 L container

To solve, we’ll need to convert everything into the same units. Let’s do g/mL.
a. 5.0 g/100 mL = 0.050 g/mL
b. 120.0 g/1,000 mL = 0.120 g/mL
c.
450.0 kg 1,000 g = 450,000 g (4.500 x 105 g)
1 kg

15 L 1,000 mL = 15,000 mL (1.5 x 104 mL)

1L

Density = 4.500 x 105 g/1.5 x 104 mL

Density = 30.00 g/mL
Correct answer: c. 450 kg in a 15 L container has the highest density

5. Chlorobenzene has a density of 1.11 g/mL.

a. How many grams are in 25.0 mL of chlorobenzene?

Mass = Density x Volume
Mass = 1.11 g/mL x 25.0 mL
Correct answer: 27.8 g

b. How many mL are in 150.0 g chlorobenzene?

4"##
Volume =
5(6#789

Volume =
.... //!1

Correct answer: 135 mL

6. Phenol has a density of 1.07 g/cm3.

a. How many grams are in 545 mL of phenol?

Mass = Volume x Density
Mass = 1.07 g/cm3 x 545 mL

Correct answer: 583 g

b. How many L are in 258 g of phenol?
4"##
Volume =
5(6#789
0)2 /
Volume =

Volume = 241 mL

241 mL 1L = 0.241 L
1,000 mL

Correct answer: 0.241 L

7. Hexane has a density of 0.655 g/mL. What mass of hexane occupies a 450.0 mL?
Mass = 0.655 g/mL x 450.0 mL
Correct answer: 295 g

8. Challenge: The density of ice is 0.9340 g/mL. A particular cube of ice measures 5.0 cm by 2.0
cm by 4.0 cm. What mass of ice is in the cube in mg?
Mass = Density x Volume
We need to first calculate the volume. To do this, we just multiply the three lengths
together (since volume is just l x w x h).
Volume = 5.0 cm x 2.0 cm x 4.0 cm = 40.0 cm3
Mass = 0.9340 g/mL x 40.0 cm3
Mass = 37.4 g
37.4 g 1,000 mg = 37,400 mg (3.74 x 104 mg)
1g

Correct answer: = 37,400 mg (3.74 x 104 mg)

9. If the density of ethyl acetate is 0.902 g/mL, what mass is in 400.0 mL of ethyl acetate?

Mass = density x volume

Mass = 0.902 g/mL x 400.0 mL
Correct answer: 361 g

10. A 0.50 L flask is half occupied by ethanol, which has a density of 0.789 g/mL. What is the
mass of ethanol in the flask?

0.50 L 1,000 mL = 500 mL

1L

Only half of this is occupied by ethanol, so the volume is 250 mL.

Mass = density x volume
Mass = 0.789 g/mL x 250 mL
Correct answer: 197 g

11. Challenge: A 250 mL flask of benzene was left out on a lab bench. After a while, only half
the liquid was left. If the density of benzene is 876 kg/m3, what is the mass of benzene
remaining in grams?

We need to convert the m3 into mL. We have a couple of options.

Option #1: Convert m3 to cm3, since we know that 1 cm3 = 1 mL

876 kg (1 m)3 = 0.000876 kg/cm3
m3 (100 cm)3

0.0000876 kg 1,000 g = 0.876 g/cm3

cm3 1 kg

Option #2: Conversion factor: 1 m3 = 1,000 L, so the density becomes 0.876 kg/L.
876 kg 1 m3 = 0.876 kg/L
m3 1,000 L

0.876 kg 1,000 g 1L = 0.876 g/mL

L 1 kg 1,000 mL

Only half the 250 mL remained, so 125 mL is the volume we’ll use.
Mass = Density x Volume
Mass = 0.876 g/mL x 125 mL
Correct answer: 110 g

12. A flask containing 300.0 mL of water is mixed with 200.0 mL of ethanol. The resulting
mixture has a mass of 510.0 g. What is the density of this mixture?

Volume of mixture = 500.0 mL

Density = Mass/volume
Density = 510.0 g/500.0 mL

Correct answer: 1.020 g/mL
