- Phonetics is the branch of linguistics that deals with the sounds of speech and their
production, combination, description, and representation by written symbols.

 - Phonology is the study of the categorical organisation of speech sounds in languages how
speech sounds are organised in the mind and used to convey meaning.

- Vowels are commonly described and identified according to the following characteristics:
 The portion of the tongue that is involved in the articulation: front, central or back.
 The tongue's position relative to the palate: high, mid or low.
 The lip rounding: rounded or unrounded.
 The length of tongue: short or long.

–Diphthongs are long vowel sounds that start in one position of the mouth and end in another
within the same syllable. There are eight primary diphthongs in the English language.
