Carr’s Argument on IT Doesn’t Matter

In his article IT DOESN’T MATTER (HBR, 2003), Nicholas Carr argues that

information technology (IT) has eventually transformed into a ubiquitous and cheap commodity.

The article argues that IT can no longer be considered to be competitively advantageous for

enterprises. According to Carr, by all means, IT cannot be ignored even if most of its strategic

benefits have been diminished. The message that is directed to the readers in this article is that

they should think and make more calculations before investing in it as like a differentiator (Carr

et al, .2003). The article claims that most companies are driving into overspending risks without

analyzing different cheaper alternatives and their investments returns.

Is Carr’s Argument Defensible?

The views represented by Nicholas Carr were carefully constructed therefore making it

defensible and agreeable. While he purely aims at the nervousness that a majority of individuals

have developed regarding technology many people may rise to criticize his work, but the fact

remains, people have nervousness regarding technology. Carr argues that as a writer, he spends a

lot of his time reading on the web with the most significant challenge of writers being the

interpretation of the texts (Carr et al, .2003). It can be argued that all which Carr tables across are

facts, therefore, issues that are by all means defensible. Apart from Carr’s article, there have

been several debates on the impacts of technology. For such reason, it is evident that the author

has hit the nail on the head by articulating such factual concerns about IT.

Factors Evident in Carr’s Article

Strategy in entrepreneurship is the most critical concern that is unveiled from Nicholas

Carr’s article. He tries to point out a message that before setting up a business, individuals

should consider information technology’s role before installing it into the firm. Few jobs have

taken into consideration the process of tampering and identifying their vulnerability. Carr argues

that there are more risks to be made than advantages with IT, especially when the resources are

vital to competition and insignificant to strategy (Carr et al, .2003).

Carr’s discussion is a useful one as it goes around the roles of IT as a strategic

differentiator of business. The debate is quite essential to new entrepreneurs or businesspeople

who intend to use IT in their businesses. The discussion is equally important as it analyses the

competitive advantages of IT in various enterprises. It points out that individuals should not

invest wildly in IT services and products as they would not have employed any proper strategies

in their businesses.
