5. WELDING PROCEDURE SPECIFICATION:

5.1 The Welding Engineer prepares a proposed Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), ensuring
that all sections of the forms are completed and all Code / Client requirements are satisfied. Where
a particular section of the form is not applicable, this is to be stated on the form.

5.2 Under normal circumstances, all WPS are prepared in accordance with the requirements of ASME
IX supplemented by any additional requirements of the Client’s Specifications.

5.3 The WPS are submitted to the Client for approval, and the WPS are not to be used for any
production welding until such approval has been granted by Client.

6. WELDING PROCEDURE QUALIFICATION:

6.1. The Welding Engineer ensures that the material for the test piece is the correct size to enable all
required test specimens to be obtained upon completion of welding. He also ensures that the
material is the correct type / grade and size for the desired qualification and that all necessary
identification numbers have been marked on the material.

6.2. All stages of the preparation, welding, Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT), inspection, Non
Destructive Examination (NDE) and mechanical testing are made available for witness by the
Client, whenever this is a requirement.

6.3. The material is prepared for welding, by machining or flame cutting and grinding (as specified on
the WPS) and is to be free from oil, grease, rust, mill scale, paint, etc.

6.4. Prior to welding, the Welding Engineer ensures that

▪ The welding consumables have been given the correct pre-issue processing (where
applicable)
▪ The welding consumables are as specified on the WPS
▪ The pre-heat (if required) has been correctly applied
▪ The set-up of the parts to be welded is within the specified tolerances.
6.5. The test piece is welded, observing the requirements of the WPS at all stages. The actual values
of amperage, voltage, travel speed, PWHT time and temperature, etc. are recorded on the
Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) sheets on similar formats of an approved, independent
Third Party Inspection Company.

6.6. Upon completion of welding, the following actions take place in the sequence stated (as
appropriate)

▪ Visual inspection
▪ NDE
▪ PWHT (if required)
▪ Visual inspection after PWHT
▪ NDE after PWHT
▪ Machining
▪ Mechanical testing

Note1: Where PWHT is a requirement, stages (a) and (b) are for BQ control only.

i. The appropriate test specimens are to be machined from the welded joint, ensuring that
the size of each of the specimens is within the specified tolerances. The specimens are
mechanically tested in accordance with the requirements of the Code / Client’s
Specifications.

ii. The mechanical testing of the specimens is carried out by an independent third party
laboratory. The Welding Engineer ensures that the Client witnesses all mechanical testing,
whenever this is a requirement.

iii. Upon completion of all inspection (including NDE) and testing, the results are recorded on
the PQR sheets. The Welding Engineer reviews the PQR sheets before being submitted
to the Client for approval, together with all necessary back-up documents (mill certificates,
PWHT record, etc.), as appropriate.

iv. An additional WPS are prepared and submitted for approval, for any changes in non-
essential variables (joint design, electrode size, position, etc.) that do not require an
additional PQR. Any change of essential variables is requiring re-qualification of the
Welding Procedure (this includes welding process, notch toughness, thickness, preheat,
PWHT and gas backing).

Note 2: The satisfactory qualification testing of the Welding Procedure also qualifies the
welder if he is not already qualified for that process and / or welding position. In such
circumstances, a Welder Qualification Record shall be issued for the welder who carried out
the welding of the test piece and the qualification shall be recorded on the List of Qualified
Welders.

Note 3: All welding procedures shall be prepared as per the requirement of SAEP-352.

For applications not listed or not requiring CSD/PMT DWR review in Table 1 the qualified
welding procedures shall be available at the fabrication/welding site (e.g., vendor shop, field
fabrication, etc.) for review by the Inspector, if requested. The procedures shall be included
in the project or shop documentation record books.

Each fabricator/vendor awarded a contract or purchase order will compile all CSD revised
previously approved welding procedures and any welding procedures, intended to be used
in Saudi Aramco projects.

Revised previously approved welding procedures must be submitted in new forms, unsigned,
and the approved copy is attached to compare welding parameters between the two copies.

The PQRs must be originals, certified/stamped copies, or colored copies of the originals. The
qualification tests must be performed by independent testing agency approved by Saudi
Aramco (Contact CSD Welding Group to get the updated list of the approved independent
test agencies).

7. PROCEDURE QUALIFICATION RECORD:

7.1 The Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) is the documentation produced when qualifying the
WPS by the welding and testing of a Welding Procedure Test Coupon.

7.2 A summary of all welding procedures qualified is maintained on the Welding Procedure
Specification Register.

7.3 The master file of all BQ WPS and PQR (original documents) are maintained by the Welding
Engineer and copies are issued for reference, as required, to the responsible project personnel.
