It is without a doubt that English nowadays plays an irreplaceable role in our modern world. Its
significance has led to the fact that many countries deem necessary to have English as a compulsory
subject within their schools. When it comes to learning English, pronunciation is considered to be a vital
part (Cakır, I. & Baytar, B., 2014). Failures to pronounce English words correctly results in problems in
various areas, especially in communication.

Ngày nay, tiếng Anh là ngôn ngữ không thể thay thế trong cuộc sống. Rất nhiều quốc gia xem ngôn ngữ
này là môn học bắt buộc trong trường học. Trong đó, khi nói đến việc học Tiếng Anh, phát âm là một yếu
tố quan trọng, bởi lẽ phát âm Tiếng Anh sai sẽ dẫn đến nhiều vấn đề khác nhau, đặc biệt là về giao tiếp.

Pronunciation is important, yet some students, including the Vietnamese, struggle with vowels when
learning it (Nguyen et al., 2021). Nguyen (2014) pointed out two problems of Vietnamese speakers
when learning vowels relating to their habitual Vietnamese vowels’ production, as well as the difficult
distinction between different types of vowels. Furthermore, students nowadays do not receive enough
pronunciation teaching. This is due to several problems, such as the dearth of pronunciation lessons in
the educational program or the lack of training for teachers. The situation therefore provokes the need
of finding a suitable approach towards learning pronunciation.

Mặc dù phát âm quan trọng, một số học sinh nói chung và học sinh Việt Nam nói riêng gặp khó khăn
khi học nguyên âm. Nguyen (2014) đã chỉ ra hai vấn đề của người Việt khi học nguyên âm, bao gồm
thói quen phát âm nguyên âm tiếng Việt khi nói tiếng Anh và khó khăn khi phân biệt các loại nguyên
âm. Dù vậy, học sinh hiện không được học phát âm một cách trọn vẹn do nhiều nguyên nhân, có thể
kể đến việc chương trình đào tạo không chú trọng phát âm hay sự thiếu hụt các đợt tập huấn dạy
phát âm cho giáo viên. Điều này làm dấy lên sự cần thiết một cách tiếp cận phù hợp đối với việc học
phát âm.

Fortunately, with the help of advanced technology, teaching and learning pronunciation seem to
be more exciting and effective (Bakar, A., Z. & Abdullah, L., T., R., M., 2015). Many attempts to
apply technology for improving pronunciation have been carried out in order to deal with the current
scene of pronunciation teaching. Much research investigating different systems resulted in positive
results towards learning pronunciation (see, e.g., Hirata, 2015; Noviyanti, 2020; Rogers et al., 1986).

Những cải tiến trong công nghệ đã giúp việc dạy và học phát âm thú vị và hiệu quả hơn. Việc tích hợp
công nghệ đã giải quyết các vấn đề liên quan đến dạy phát âm. Nhiều nghiên cứu áp dụng các hệ
thống khác nhau đều cho ra kết quả tích cực đến việc học phát âm.

In terms of technological application, ELSA Speak has proved its efficiency as a supportive tool for
promoting pronunciation, using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR).
Considering the effectiveness of integrating technology in teaching pronunciation, as well as the positive
feedbacks from its users, this study is carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of ELSA Speak in teaching
and learning pronunciation within the context of Vietnamese students. The study will focus on
addressing students’ English vowels as these sounds play a vital part in pronouncing English, and many
people find it uneasy to deal with the issues regarding vowels.
ELSA Speak - Một trong những ứng dụng hỗ trợ phát âm tiêu biểu nhất - đã cho thấy tính hiệu quả của
mình, sử dụng trí tuệ nhân tạo và tính năng nhận diện giọng nói tự động (ASR). Sau khi xem xét tính
hiệu quả của việc tích hợp công nghệ vào giảng dạy phát âm, cũng như những phản hồi tích cực của
người dùng ELSA Speak, bài nghiên cứu này được đưa ra nhằm đánh giá tính hiệu quả của ELSA Speak
trong việc dạy và học phát âm, trong bối cảnh học sinh là người Việt Nam. Nghiên cứu sẽ tập trung
vào nguyên âm tiếng Anh của học sinh vì chúng đóng vai trò quan trọng trong việc phát âm tiếng Anh,
đồng thời có nhiều vấn đề khó giải quyết liên quan đến nguyên âm đối với người học.
