Abderrahmane Dedeche Quest time! How we contextualize SDGs framework and student agency to guide English C1-45 No
our learning journeys
Session Description:
Academyati has blended ideas from Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and the self-directed learning movement to develop a powerful model for early childhood learning, one that is unique in both Qatar and the broader Middle
East. This year, Academyati has started its Phase 3 - for children aged 10 to 12 years old. For this phase, learners engage in individual or team open-ended projects which we call Quests. The quests are learner-led but are
guided through a learning cycle. Every learning cycle is characterized by an overarching theme of one (or more) of the SDGs which are contextualized to Qatar's Grand Challenges (QGCs).The children are entrusted to lead
their learning journeys and are supported by educators to achieve the goals they set for themselves at the beginning of each learning cycle which can last between 4 to 6 weeks. The learning cycle is composed of an
Exploration phase. Followed by a round of Goal Setting. Then a lengthy Creation phase; and finally, it concludes with a learning festival where learning is celebrated by the community. These Quests take our learners
everywhere! From cleaning the Singing Sand Dunes to thinking and planning sustainable interventions for Qatar to fulfill the QNV2030 among other examples. Service learning in Academyati is rooted in our 5
Competency framework which includes Agency, Communications, Critique and Feedback, Inquiry, and Awareness for Well-being.

community.

Charles Schnuman, Aisha Al-Ammari and Dhoha AL-Malki Learning Through Doing English C1-23 No
Session Description:
In this presentation, educators are invited to learn more about Qatar University’s College of Law and the experiential learning initiatives that it has pursued over the past several years. This presentation will focus on three
unique programs, all of which incorporate aspects of experiential learning coupled with service components. The College of Law’s Externship Program is an experiential course that has been specially designed to expose
QU students to different models of legal skills related to specific areas of law while allowing students to acquire greater insight into the process of lawyering in a supportive environment. Moot Court introduces students
to fictitious, albeit real-world legal cases that have been crafted by legal experts and academics. Students study the facts of these cases, draft memos and briefs, and then argue against opposing parties in real courtroom
settings. Last but not least, the College of Law Legal Clinic Provides legal aid to vulnerable groups in Qatari society through legal representation. Elements of these three programs can be useful in educating students of all
ages. Replication of the “Learning Through Doing” approach can take several forms - from flipped-classroom techniques to actual community outreach and support. “Learning Through Doing” encourages students to
utilize their various skills to solve problems that provide immediate feedback and recognition. Moreover, when properly implemented, these activities help build student confidence and esprit de corps.
