 1. 독해력(reading comprehension)이란?
 Understanding a written text = extracting the required
information from it as efficiently as possible.
 독해력 향상을 위한 기본요소
1) 기본적인 문법 지식 이외에 어휘력을 늘려야 한다.
2) 문장 형성에 사용되는 기본적 원리를 알아야 한다.
3) 다양한 주제에 관한 글을 많이 읽어야 한다.
4) To need different reading strategies for diverse cases such
as when looking at a notice board, when reading an article in a
scientific journal.

 영어 독해란?

• 영어로 된 문장을 읽고 이해하는 것을 의미

• 글의 전체적인 맥락을 정확하게 파악하는 것이 중요
• 영어 독해의 경우에는 영어권 사회/문화 전반에 걸친
다양한 지식이 뒷받침 필요
• 영문 독해의 접근 요령을 익히는 것이 필요

 독해의 기본 단위
v 영어 문장의 기본적인 단위
단어 => 구 => 문장(sentence) => 단락(paragraph)

 영문 독해의 기본 단위
• 주어 + 동사가 존재하는 독립된 하나의 문장
• 경우에 따라서는 하나의 단락(paragraph)
• 특정한 주제를 중심으로 하나의 주제문(main sentence)
과 여러 개의 보조 단락(supporting sentence)이 구성

 2. 독해력 향상을 위한 접근법

 어휘력과 문법을 바탕으로 다양한 글을 접하기!

 영문 독해는 영문 구조를 제대로 파악하지 못한다면
접근이 불가능 문법(grammar)은 독해의 기본
 어휘력(vocabulary)이 독해를 좌우
- 가능한 한 많은 어휘를 쓰임새나 활용을 정확하게
익히는 것이 중요
- 영어를 영문 그대로 이해하고 받아들이는 습관과
매일매일 학습하는 습관을 통해 실력 향상

 2. 독해력 향상을 위한 접근법

 글 전체(줄기(trunk))를 보는 것이 필요
- 독해력이란 주어 + 동사 + 그 외 요소로 구성된 문장
들의 뼈대를 파악하면서 글의 중심 사상(main idea)을 파악
하는 능력이며 이를 위해서 각 단락(paragraph)의 화제
(topic)를 찾고, 화제문(topic sentence)을 찾는 연습 필요

 한국어를 잘해야 영어도 잘 할 수 있다.

 3. 영문 독해를 위해 알아야 할 용어

1) 영문 독해 관련 용어
단락(paragraph): A paragraph is a group of closely related
sentences dealing with a single topic or idea.
<Supporting sentences를 통해 단락을 전개하는 방법>
- 화제와 관련된 사실(facts)을 나열
- 각종 통계자료를 제시
- 구체적인 보기를 제시
- 사건(incidents)이나 일화(anecdotes)를 소개
- Comparison 이나 contrasts 방법 활용
- Cause과 effect를 제시

 3. 영문 독해를 위해 알아야 할 용어
화제(topic): A topic is a subject for conversation, talk, or writing.
화제문(topic sentence): A topic sentence states the main idea of the
paragraph.
주제(subject): 주제, 제재이며 main subject
중심사상(main idea)(요지): 작가가 글을 통해 전달하려는 생각, 주로
의도, 목적으로 표현
보조문 (supporting sentence): 화제문을 세부적으로 보충, 설명하여
중심사상을 뒷받침해주는 구체적인 진술문들, for instance, for
example, in addition, besides, in fact, in practice 등의 표현이 포함된 문장
일관성/통일성 (unity): 하나의 단락을 구성하는 여러 문장들은 상호
밀접한 관련성이 있어 글의 전개 흐름상 일관되어야 함

2) 영문 구조와 관련된 용어
 병치법(Parallelism): 서로 비슷한 관계에 놓여 있는 둘 이상의 문
장요소(단어, 구, 절)의 문법상의 균형을 의미, 등위접속사나 상관
접속사에 의해 연결, 즉 동일한 문법적 성질을 지닌 것으로 병치
He was intelligent, honest and he had courage. (X)
He was intelligent, honest, and courageous. (O)
He is not only charming but also a good athlete. (X)

 현수 수식(Dangling Modifier): 준동사구나 생략절에서 주
어가 생략됨으로써 주절의 주어와 논리상 일치하지 못하여 그 문
장의 내용을 파악함에 있어서 혼란을 초래하는 구문

In waiting for Ted, he saw many students. (O)
To run for public office, certain requirements must be met. (X)

 조각난 문장(Sentence Fragment): 완전한 문장이 성립
되기 위해서는 최소한의 기본 요건인 주어와 동사가 있
어야 하고 내용상으로는 그 구문 자체로서 논리적으로
의미(sense)가 통해야 하는데 이 두 가지 요건을 충족하
지 못하면 문장 (글의 강조 효과나 경제성 고려하여 생
략되는 문장도 있음)

After a had day of work. He often went to the park. (X)

After a hard day of work, he often went to the park. (O)

 종속의 법칙(Subordination): 형식적인 면에서 종속접
속사, 관계대명사, 의문 대명사 따위로 연결되는 종속절
은 반드시 주절에 종속되어야 하고 내용적인 면에서 주
절의 내용만으로 부족할 때 종속절을 통하여 보충적인
내용을 추가해야 한다. 종속의 법칙은 문장의 구조상,
표현상 나타나는 문제로서 어떤 하나의 절(clause)이 문
장 중에서 명사, 형용사, 부사 등의 역할을 하는 복문
(Complex Sentence)에서 나타나는 현상

 콤마의 남용(Comma Splice): 콤마의 오용이라 함은 독
립된 두 개의 절이 접속사 없이 콤마로만 연결된 경우
이며 상관접속사, 세미콜론(semicolon), 마침표(period)
따위를 사용하여 보충해 줌으로서 자연스런 문맥 형성
이 가능하다.

 4. 영문 단락의 구성
 하나의 단락에는 구성적인 측면에서 하나의 화제와 연
관되어 있는 여러 개의 supporting sentences로 결합되
어 있으며, 내용적인 측면에서는 화제와 관련성을 두고
통일성(unity)을 갖춰야 한다. 단락에서 화제나 중심사
상은 구별되어야 하며 첫 문장과 마지막 문장에 제시되
는 경우가 일반적이다.
 보조문을 서술하여 단락을 전개하는 방법들
- 화제와 관련된 사실(facts) 열거 - 각종 통계자료(statistics) 제시
- 구체적인 보기(specifics) 예시 - 사건이나 일화(anecdotes) 소개
- 비교(comparisons) 또는 대조(contrasts) 사용
- 원인(cause)과 결과(effect) 분석

 5. The Importance of Grammar in Reading
Comprehension
 Knowing how a sentence is put together can help tremendously
with reading comprehension.
 Knowing about sentence structure helps you see the relationships
between ideas in sentences and paragraphs and can help you
determine main ideas and details.
 “Untangling” complex sentences is critical to help you understand
more complex texts.
 Knowledge of sentence structure helps you be able to expand and
rearrange items in written sentences to make your writing clearer
and more sophisticated.
 Learning about different types of sentence structure helps you be
able to combine simple written sentences into more interesting

• - Novels, short stories, tales; other literary texts and passages (e.g. essays, diaries,

stop press, classified ads, weather forecast, radio /TV/ theatre programs),

Recipes, advertisements, travel brochures, catalogues, Puzzles, problems, rules for

 7. Why and How do we read?
 There are two main reasons for reading:
Reading for pleasure
Reading for information (in order to find out something or in order to do
something with the information you get).
 The main ways of reading are as follows:
Skimming: quickly running one's eyes over a text to get the gist of it.
Scanning: quickly going through a text to find a particular piece of
information.
Extensive reading: reading longer texts, usually for one's own pleasure.
This is a fluency activity, mainly involving global understanding.
Intensive reading: reading shorter texts, to extract specific information.
This is more an accuracy activity involving reading for detail.

• 영어 원서를 읽을 때는,
• 영어 단어들을 머릿속에서 바로 이미지로 전환,
• 전환된 이미지를 조립해서 이해
• 영어 어순의 중요성(한국어와의 차이)

- 이중 번역 습관 제거

 How to increase Reading Comprehension?
The first step in increasing your reading comprehension is to
learn how to get the basic information. Like a good detective,
start with the basic facts.
As a reader faced with a text, you go through a similar process.
The first thing you should do is establish the facts. What does
this piece of writing tell you? What happens? To whom? When,
where, and how? If you can answer these basic questions, you’re
on your way to really comprehending what you read.
You can hone your reading comprehension skills by answering
these six essential questions after reading articles in the daily
newspaper: ■ Who? ■ What? ■ When?
■ Where? ■ Why? ■ How?

• The following brief passage is similar to something you

might see in a newspaper. Read the passage carefully, and
then answer the questions that follow.

On Friday, October 21, at approximately 8:30 a.m., Judith
Reynolds, owner of The Cupcake Factory, arrived at her
establishment to find that it had been robbed and
vandalized overnight. The front window of the shop at 128
Broad Street was broken, and chairs and tables were
overturned throughout the café area. Additionally, the cash
register had been pried open and emptied of money. The
thieves attempted to open the safe as well, but were
unsuccessful. Ms. Reynolds used her cell phone to report
the crime to the police. She also phoned the proprietor of
Primo Pizza, located at 130 Broad Street, as she noticed
that the door of that restaurant showed signs of forced
entry. The police department is asking anyone with
information to call 555-2323.
