Directions: Read the conversation between Ed and Luna then answer the
questions that follow.

Ed: Hey, Luna! What costume did you bring with you?
Luna: Hi, Ed! I brought my favorite Tinker Bell costume. I really like to become
a beautiful fairy. I like to fly and float in the air. I always imagine myself that I
could talk
to the flowers. I want to have unlimited pixie dust for everyone
who wants to be beautiful like me. How about you? What do you have?

costume. I always pretend that I
am a hero. I like to run, climb and
jump like Robin Hood. I also want
to help the poor people. Most of
all, I want to fight my enemies
with my weapon and then I always
win.
Luna: I think our teacher will like
our costumes. Come on let’s get
inside our classroom.
Questions:

TUESDAY Mathematics 1. Adds and subtracts Arrange the jumbled letters

9:00 – 11:00 simple fractions and RAFCITON-FRACTION
mixed numbers without NOITIDDA-ADDITION
or with regrouping. A fraction is defined as a portion of a whole that can be represented with
M6NS-Ia-86 numbers.
Fractions are parts of a whole. Example, ¾ in which 3 is the numerator and 4
is the denominator. It is divided by a bar. There are different types of fractions.
Similar fractions are fractions which have the same denominators like
2/5,4/5,3/5 and so on.
Dissimilar fractions are fractions which have different denominators like
3/4,5/6,2/9 and so on.
Mixed Numbers are made up of a whole number and a fraction like 2 1
3 4/2,7 7/4 and so on.
Mixed numbers can also be expressed as an improper fraction and vice versa.
2 2/3=8/3,1 2/5=7/5
To express mixed numbers to improper fraction multiply the denominator by
the whole number then add the numerator.
To express an improper fraction to a mixed number divide the numerator
by the denominator. Make the remainder the numerator then copy the
denominator.
8/3= 2 2/3, 7/5= 1 2/5
Let us try to read and analyze these word problems.
Problem 1
Jose jogs regularly. He jogged 1/5 kilometer then rested for a while. He jogged
another 3/5 kilometer then stopped. How many kilometer did he jog?

What kind of fraction are they?

They are similar fractions. Since they have the same denominator, directly add
the numerators then copy the denominator.
Add 1/5 and 3/5, 1/5+3/5=4/5 km. he jogged
Other Example:
2/8+ 4/8=6/8 =3/4
Add the numerators then copy the denominator. Simplify the answer by
dividing the numerator and the denominator by their GCF(greatest
common factor)

Problem 2
The Scouting Club hiked ¾ of a kilometer to the lake and another 5/8 of a
kilometer to the campsite. How far did they hike in all?

What have you noticed? They are dissimilar fractions. Do you think we can add
them directly?
To add dissimilar fractions, we express them into similar fractions using their
Least Common Denominator ( LCD) then perform the operation. The LCD of
dissimilar fractions is the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of the denominators.
Add: ¾ and 5/8
We change them into similar fractions using the least common denominator
(LCD).
The LCM of 4 and 8 is 8. Find the equivalent fractions whose denominator is 8.
6/8+5/8= (8/4=2x3=6/8) copy the denominator then add 5/8
6/8=5/8=11/8, 1 3/8.
Simplify the answer.
Add just like similar fractions. Add the
numerators then copy the denominator.

Directions: Find the sum. Express your answers to lowest term.

1.1/4+2/4= n
2. 1/6+3/6=n
3.6/10+2/10=n
4. 2/4+3/4=n
5. 1/8+2/8=n
6. 3/4+ 1/8= n
7. 3/5+ 1/2=n
Directions: Read each item carefully and do what is asked.
1.Find the total of 2/8 and 2/3=11/12
2. 2/3 and 5/8=1 7/24
3. Add 9/12 and 15/6=3 ¼
4. Find the sum of 2/4 and 5/8=1 1/8
2. Adds and subtracts Read and analyze this word problem.
simple fractions and Problem 1
mixed numbers without Ana is a seamstress. Someone ordered a complete set of beddings. She went
or with regrouping. to the store to buy the cloth she needed. In one store she bought 3 5/8 meters,
M6NS-Ia-86 in the second store she bought 2 4/8 meters. How many meters of cloth did
she buy in all?

What kind of fractions are they?

They are called mixed numbers. To add mixed numbers by mixed numbers
we...First add the wholes which are 3 and 2.
Add 3 5/8 and 2 4/8
2+3=5
Then the fractional part, 5/8 and 4/8. So the answer is 9/8 or 1 1/8.
To simplify an improper fraction to a mixed number, divide the numerator by
the denominator. = 6 1/8 meter of cloth
Problem 2
Samantha prepared orange juice. She mixed 1 2/3 liter of liquid juice and 1 4/5
liters of water. What is the total number of liters that she mixed?
They are dissimilar fractions. We cannot add them directly. We change them
into their equivalent fractions using their least common denominator (LCD).
Add: 1 2/3+ 1 4/5
1+1=2
2/3=10/15
4/5=12/15
10/15+ 12/15=22/15=1 7/15 = 2 + 1 7/15= = 3 7/15 liters
Add them like similar fractions. Add the whole numbers then the numerators
and copy the denominator. Simplify if necessary.

Add the following.

1.4 3/12 and 2 9/24=6 3/8
2. Add 2 4/6 and 2/3=3 6/18= 3 1/3
