contributed in changing the landscape of the world

and its inhabitants. Amid this growth
and advancement in technology, the environment
seems to bear and suffer the consequences. Every
day, we are confronted with issues and problems
related to the environment. The issue on climate
change is one concrete manifestation and realization
that the age of globalization and the rapid industrial
and technological advancement has taken its toll on
the natural environment.

Climate Change

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in

temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may
be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have
been the main driver of climate change, primarily due
to the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil and gas),
which produces heat-trapping gases.

Global warming is the long-term heating of Earth's

surface observed since the pre-industrial period
(between 1850 and 1900) due to human activities,
primarily fossil fuel burning, which increases heat-

trapping greenhouse gas levels in Earth's

atmosphere.

PRODUCTION PATTERNS
Production refers to how people generate and
manufacture the products they need to use, sell, or
consume. Almost everything comes from natural
resources which are depleted every time they are
used.

If production pattern is characterized by heavy

dependence on coal, the problem of climate change
will be more aggravated. China, for instance, has
large coal mines and relief on them for its energy
requirements. This makes China one of the most
polluted countries on Earth. Dependence on
petroleum in the manufacture and production of
goods makes U.S. produced 23 percent of global
carbon emission.

CONSUMPTION PATTERNS
Consumption refers to the use of economic or
consumer goods and resources. Consumption
patterns can be categorized as individual, family,

company and government consumption. It is the

main reason why we need to use our resources.
Ecosystem has the ability to regenerate, sustain and
adjust what is lost, but with the excessive use of land
resources, ecosystem will be destroyed.

In economics, the more consumption, the more

demand, the more demand the more production, the
more production the more extraction to natural
resources, the more extraction the faster for the
resources to destroy. There sources in our
environment are limited but the need for production
and consumption is unlimited

GREEN HOUSE EFFECT

transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation

7 EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE YOU’RE ALREADY

SEEING
Climate change isn’t something that’s happening in 10 or
20 years. It’s happening now. Here are seven effects of
climate change you’ve already seen.

1) LONGER, MORE INTENSE ALLERGY SEASONS.

Warming temperatures in some areas, like the northern
United States, are extending the periods when plants
release pollen. This affects not only people who already
have allergies, but those who don’t. This means that
people who have pollen allergies might experience more
intense symptoms, and people who don’t normally have
allergies might begin to experience them. This pollen can
induce allergic asthma.

2) FOODS YOU LOVE ARE BECOMING LESS NUTRITIOUS

AND COST MORE AT THE GROCERY STORE.
The same CO2 accumulating in our atmosphere thanks to
fossil fuels is actually changing the composition of fruits
and vegetables that we eat, making them less nutritious.
Extra CO2 is speeding up photosynthesis and causing
plants to grow with more sugar and less calcium, protein,
zinc, and important vitamins.

Not only is food becoming less nutritious, but it could

soon cost more too. Beginning in 2006, drought in major
wheat-producing countries was a key factor in a dramatic
spike in food prices around the globe. And as the world
keeps getting hotter, we can expect to see this kind of
drought more and more often.

3) MORE COMMON, MORE SEVERE, AND MORE LONG-

LASTING HEAT WAVES.
Extreme heat and heat waves have happened since the
beginning of time. But across the board, climate change is
making heat waves more common, severe, and long-
lasting. Heat waves can become so intense that our
roads actually melt.

4) WILDFIRES CAUSING DAMAGE TO OUR LANDSCAPES

AND OUR COMMUNITIES – AS WELL AS OUR HEALTH.
Wildfires are devastating communities around the world.
From the billion-dollar destruction they cause to the costs
of lost plant, animal, and even human life, these
devastating natural disasters are scarring our landscapes.

5) HURRICANES ARE BECOMING MORE LIKELY AND

MORE DANGEROUS.

DEPEDK12 RESOURCES HIGH SCHOOL

Around the world, average sea surface temperatures are

rising. As seas gets warmer, they add more water vapor
and heat energy into the atmosphere. This extra heat and
water, just happens to be the perfect fuel for hurricanes
and in the right conditions, can make dangerous storms
even more powerful.

6) MORE CLIMATE-RELATED MASS MIGRATION.

Climate change is already prompting an increase in
migration, with people being forced to leave their homes
because of drought, flooding, and other climate-related
disasters.

7) DISEASES ARE SPREADING MORE EASILY.

Disease-carrying insects thrive with warmer-than-average
temperatures, extreme heat waves, and heavy rains.
These vectors live longer lives in extended periods of
warm weather. Fly into new areas that were previously
too cold. And reproduce in water deposits left by the rain.
Climate change is also creating ideal conditions for
waterborne pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and
protozoa, which flourish in warmer waters.

C. ABSTRACTION
10 Possible Solutions for Climate Change Madaan (2018)
suggested that there is a solution to each problem, and
suggested possible solutions to climate change namely:

1. Stop Cutting down Trees: Believe it or not, cutting

down trees is the prime reason of the climate change.
Planting new trees can quickly scale back the speed of the
emission of gases.

2. Control Population: Yes, if the population is controlled,

then climate change can also be controlled. How? Putting
in simpler words, a greater number of individuals
suggests that additional demand of resources like food
and shelter resulted in additional usage or utilization of
the earth.

3. Less use of Fossil Fuels: The high discharges of the

greenhouse gases are diminishing the ozone layer which
gives global warming. It is then one of the major causes of
climate change.

4. Unplug your Devices: In almost every house, there are

at least a dozen of appliances which includes air
conditioner, television, microwave, washing machine and
others. These devices lead to global warming, hence the
climate change.

5. Focus on Renewable Energy: Fossil fuels are going to

be finished in an exceedingly few decade and it's time to
maneuver towards the renewable energy. In several
elements of the globe, several cities are using the energy
from the renewable sources of energy which incorporates

wind, solar, tidal, ocean and many more.

6. Control of Methane Leaks: Surprisingly, methane is a

more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Every
month, there is a huge quantity of methane leak from
pipeline, storage tanks, other infrastructure, garbage
dumps and coal mines.

7. Tougher Emissions and Efficiency Standards: Most of

the harmful gases are released either by automobiles or
power plants. Many countries have already put strict
rules in controlling the emissions.

8. Experimenting the Earth: There are many experiments

being done on Earth which might control climate change.
Some ideas like, Geo-engineering, radical interventions to
either block sunlight or reduce greenhouse gas are
probably the last options to control the climate change.

9. Upgrade in infrastructure: Buildings require cement

and it is produced by heating limestone giving rise to the
carbon dioxide level. Upgrade in infrastructure like,
making the roads perfect, improving cement-making
processes and investing in new infrastructure or radically

upgrading existing highways and transmission lines would

cut emission of greenhouse gas and control climate
change.

10.Personal Solutions to Global Warming: There are

many steps which everyone can take in order to control
the climate change. A small step by anyone can make a
big difference.
 Drive less and cycle more while going to school or work.
 Upgrade your refrigerator and air conditioner,
especially if they are more than five years old.
