ASSIGNMENT QUESTION

Part 1 (90%)

OBJECTIVES:
The purpose of this assignment is to enhance the learner’s ability to:
1. Analyse trade unions in Malaysia.
2. Evaluate relevant practices related to the dispute in Malaysia.
3. Recommend harmonious industrial relations.

REQUIREMENT:

There are 2 tasks for this assignment. Answer BOTH.

TASK 1 (50%):
1. Trade unions in Malaysia are regulated by the Trade Union Act 1959. You are
required to select at least 3 articles (empirical research papers) from refereed
journals pertaining to the trade union movement in Malaysia.

("Refereed" means that the article has been formally reviewed by a group of peer
researchers).

2. Write a review for each article (3 reviews) according to the following format:

Grading.

The assignment will be graded based on both contents as well as the presentation. You
may receive low marks due to poor presentation, even if the content is adequate. The
presentation includes spelling, grammar, sentence and paragraph structure, continuity and
transitions between paragraphs, headings, and other mechanics of expository writing.

TASK 2 (40%):

What is a workplace dispute?

A workplace dispute is when a conflict emerges in the workplace between employees,


managers, and customers. While most conflicts are one-time occurrences that resolve
themselves, intervention is vital if the matter is ongoing or escalates. Disputes in the
workplace come in all forms. Some disputes occur due to a simple misunderstanding or
disagreement while other disputes can arise from a much deeper underlying issue, such
as a conflict in personality, political views, religious beliefs, and more.

It is an employer’s responsibility to have a clear, written procedure in place for airing


grievances and resolving workplace disputes to ensure the process is fair and the matter
is resolved peacefully. All organisations must have their own model dispute resolution
clause.

Based on the above scenario, you are required to do the following;

1. Select one organisation of your choice. Examine the selected organisation’s current
dispute administration practices.

2. Discuss in detail current guidelines or procedures of dispute resolution used by the


selected organisation.

3. Discuss four (4) challenges that the selected organisation encounter in order to reduce
the occurrence of a trade dispute.

4. Recommend ways to promote harmonious industrial relations in an organisation.
