C. Lesson Proper Teacher Student

Our lesson for today is all about

Different types of Learner-centered
philosophies.

Let me as you first, who did most of the

talking inside the classroom? Was it the
teacher or was it the students?
Well, it is very important for you to know
who did most of the talking inside the classroom
so that you can easily identify
and reflect the importance of learner-centered
philosophies in your life as a future educator.
For many years, we all know that the teacher
did most of the work inside the classroom and those will
include planning, disciplining, educating and evaluationg
the students. So that, this student spends most of the time
sitting in charge of observing the teachers and also participation
in the questions of the students is just limited because the
teachers did most of the work inside the classroom.
Now do you have any ideas about Learner- Yes Ma’am.
Centered Philosophies? Learner-Centered
Philosophies
It focus more on training in
individual students, it place
more emphasis on the
individuality of students and
helping them to realize their
potential.

Thank you very much for your

answer. Indeed, learner-centered
philosophies are another essential
philosophy that educators should be
aware of. By focusing on the needs of
students, teachers are able to assist
and teach the students within the classroom
ensuring a higher level of student success.

There are different learner-centered philosophies

namely Progressivism, Humanism,Constructivism
and Existentialism.

Progressivism is based on the positive

changes and problem-solving approach
that individuals with various educational
credentials cna provide their students.
The progressivist classroom is about exploration
and experience. Teachers act as facilitators in a classroom where
students explore physical, mental, moral, and social growth.
Thus, common sights in progressivist classroom might include
small groups debating,custom-made activities and learning
stations. Teachers typically walk freely among the groups, guiding
them using suggestions and thought-
provoking questions.

Example:
It is indeed that education should be a process of ongoing
growth, not just a preparation for becoming an adult. An obvious
example of progressivism would be our class, we are in groups a lot
and we actively learn through discusssion.

Humanism is a learner-centered philosophy that

focuses on enhancing one’s innate goodness,
rejects the idea of group-oriented education and
uphold the idea of enhancing individual development.
In humanism it is a humane approach to education
One that helps the students and themselves and their potential
that encourage compassion and understanding that fosters
self-respect and respect for others. It is a learner-centered
philosophy which transfer the power from the teacher and to the
students. Humanism is about self-directed learning in which
students takes responsibility for their own learning by creating
their own realistic goals and deciding the best way to achieved
them.
Thus, humanism is promoting cooperative learning and small
group learning instead of competitive large group learning.

Example:
Techers can help students set learning goals at the beginning
of the year, and then help design pathways for students to
reach their goals. Students are incharge of their learning and
teachers can help steer them in the right direction.
Constructivism is a student learner-centered philosophy that
emphasizes hands-on learning and students actively participating
in lessons. Constructivists believe that students should be able to
discover lesson on their own through hands on activity because
it is the most effective way of learning and considered through
learning . So, constructivism is a knowledge that constructed as
learners makes sense of their experience we can encounter
something new, we have to reconcile it with our previous ideas
and experience. Maybe changing what we beleive or maybe
discarding the new information as relevant.

Example:
An elementary teacher presents a class problem to measure the
length of the “bondpaper” rather than starting the problem by
introducing the ruler, the teacher allows studesnts to reflect and to
construct their own methods of measurement.

Existentialism is an approach that emphasizes that existence

of the individual perosn as a free and responsible agent
determing their own development through acts of the will.
Existentialists believe that every individual is unique and education
must cater to the individual differences. Therefore, the objective
of education is to enable every individual to develop his unique
qualities, to harness his potentialities and cultivate his
individualities.

Example:
You identify yourself as an athlete and have a promising
career. Then, you have a severe injury and your career is over. At
that point, you would have an existential crisis because you have
defined yourself as an athlete.
Those are the learner-centered philosopies that we
need to understand as a future educator.
