ACTIVITY SHEET IN SCIENCE

Grade: 9 Week: 3 Quarter: 3

I. Objective: Illustrate how energy from volcanoes may be tapped for human use.

II. Presentation of the Lesson:

ENERGY FROM THE VOLCANO

Since our country is a home to more than a hundred volcanoes, energy has been tapped
from them. Actually, the Philippines ranks second in the world’s production of geothermal
energy. According to the Department of Energy, 14.4% of the country’s total power generation is
produced from geothermal energy. The production of electricity from geothermal energy is
cheaper than the electricity production using natural gas, coal, and hydropower.

Geothermal energy

Hot water and steam from deep underground can be used to drive turbines: this is called
geothermal energy.

Volcanic areas

In volcanic areas, the rocks may heat water so that it rises to the surface naturally as hot
water and steam. The steam can be used to drive turbines and electricity generators.

Geothermal power stations are located in places such as Iceland, USA, Italy, and Philippines.

Hot rocks

In some places, the rocks are hot, but no hot water

or steam rises to the surface. In this situation, deep
wells can be drilled down to the hot rocks and cold
water pumped down. The water runs through
fractures in the rocks and is heated up. It returns to
the surface as hot water and steam, where its
energy can be used to drive turbines and electricity
generators. The diagram shows how this works.

Advantages

 Geothermal energy is a renewable energy

resource and there are no fuel costs.
 No harmful polluting gases are produced.

Disadvantages

 Most parts of the world do not have suitable areas where geothermal energy can be
exploited.

COOL FACTS

 Looking to the past. People have used geothermal energy for thousands of years. Ancient
Romans, Chinese, and Native American cultures used hot mineral springs for bathing,
cooking, and eating.

 Hot stuff! Most people in Iceland use geothermal energy to heat water and buildings.

 Ring of Fire. Many of the best locations for geothermal energy are found in the “Ring of Fire,”
a horseshoe–shaped area around the Pacific Ocean that experiences a lot of earthquakes
and volcanic eruptions. That's because hot magma is very close to the Earth's surface there.

III. EVALUATION:

True or False. Write TRUE if the statement is true, FALSE if false.

1. The Philippines ranked second in the world in generating electricity using geothermal energy
since it is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire and has many volcanoes.

2. The hot steam from deep within the ground is used to turn turbine-generator system in a
hydroelectric power plant.

3. In a geothermal power station, deep wells are drilled down to the hot rocks and cold water is
pumped up, while hot steam goes down to the other deep well.

4. Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source which means it is sustainable and will not
easily run out.

5. Most countries in the world are now easily using geothermal energy as a source of electricity
since they can simple dig a hole in the ground to reach hot rocks.
