• Pay attention and make eye contact when someone is speaking to you
• Ask questions when you are unsure

• Be honest when you do not understand and ask questions when you need help

ACTIVITY 1: MEETING YOUR SUPERVISOR


1. When you first go to the workplace be prepared to meet your supervisor.
• Practice your introduction before you go
• Introduce yourself with a smile and a firm but not too tight handshake and say:
o “Hello my name is _____________________. I am here for my work experience.
o Can I please speak with _________________?”

2. A good handshake
• Practice your handshake with the rest of the class
• Your handshake should be firm, but not too hard or you will hurt the other person’s hand
• Your handshake should not be weak and floppy
• Practice your introduction with other students, teachers and family so that you get used to it

3. Making conversation
Below are some other examples of when you may need to communicate in the workplace. What would
you say?

• Asking a question to understand your job


• Asking where to find a workplace facility / equipment / person you need to speak with
Reporting a problem – For example, a hazard you might see at your workplace or something that may be
unsafe

ACTIVITY 2: PRACTICE – HOW TO LOOK AND SOUND FRIENDLY


4. Assess yourself with the following. Check those which you think you are good at
already and can confidently do. Do not put a check if you think you (somehow)
are not yet good at it. (*Medyo nahihiya pa.)
 Uses a friendly voice
 Uses eye contact
 Uses a firm handshake
 Has a smile on his or her face
 Speaks in a clear voice
 Is keen to learn
 Is happy to be at work
 Treats fellow workers/customers/supervisor with respect
 Has friendly ‘body language
 Keeps still and pays attention

5. What are some of the things you do well? What are some things you would like to
improve?

Keep practicing with different people when you get a chance. The more you practice the easier it will
become!
