Budget (noun) – an amount of money available for spending that is based on a plan for
how it will be spent
Budget (verb) – to plan to spend; to allocate funds
Allocate – to divide and give something for a special reason; to allot
Expenses – refers to the money paid by the family for goods and services that they get

Ask: Who usually do the budgeting?
Why do we have to budget the family income properly?
(To meet the needs of the family & to know where the income goes.)

Show this pie graph to the learners.

Have the class analyze the graph. Tell them that this is where the family income goes, we
call these expenses. This is how a family divides/allocate the family income for their needs.

1. Discussion
In budgeting family income, the following factors must be considered.
• Size of the family
• Family income
• Kind of work each family member does
• Talents and abilities of every individual
• Where the family lives

(Elaborate the discussion. Make sure that there is an interaction between the learners &
the teacher.)
Components of Family Budget
• Food
• Shelter – rent, taxes, repair & maintenance
• Clothing
• Education
• Household operations- things needed in the house
• Utilities – electricity, water & telephone bill, internet, salary of helper
• Medical & dental
• Recreation – family outings, outside dinning, watching movies
• Savings
• Social & moral obligations – attending weddings, birthdays, baptismal

2. Activities
A. Activity 1
Divide the class into 4 groups. Each group will have a manila paper and a marker.
Tell them to draw a pie graph showing the budget allocation of Family Cruz.
*Mrs. Cruz has divided their monthly income to the following components:
Education 13% Household operations 14%
Food 35% Savings 5%
Shelter 15% Clothing 3%
Utilities 12% Dental 3%

B. Activity 2
Group Activity (Same Group)
Pretend that your group is your family. Allocate your family income/budget using a pie graph
or a chart. Don’t forget the factors to be considered when budgeting.
(Each group will have a representative to explain their output before the class.

To avoid wasting of money, wise budgeting is needed.
Call one or two learners to explain the sentence.
