Praxis Core Exam Analysis

In Nevada, it is required to pass the first Praxis core exam before taking any education

courses at any of the universities in Nevada. The exam requirements are composed of three

subjects, math, writing, and reading. The passing score for the math section of the first praxis

exam is 157. The passing score for the reading section of the first praxis exam is 156. The

passing score for the writing section of the first praxis exam is 162.

It was difficult for me to properly prepare because of my full-time school and job

schedules. I did check out the style of the questions from Khan Academy to give myself an

insight of what type of questions will be on the exam. Fortunately, I was taking Math 120E this

semester, which helped me improve in math.

In math, I scored in the 55% range. This surprised me because math is my weakest

subject, and this means I still need more time to improve. I feel that was a great score for a

practice test for me because I scored extremely low for my math placement test at CSN. In

reading, I scored in the 39% range, which I am shocked at, because reading is usually one of my

strengths. In writing, I scored in the 63% range, which again, I am shocked to see. I was very

nervous because I was not expecting to type two essays, and for the two essay prompts I

struggled to think of enough information.

My plan is to finish most of my courses before investing time and money for a tutor.

Currently, I am working five days a week as an autism teacher’s aide, attending two courses

through big blue button after work twice a week, along with taking two other courses, which

means I do not have the free time now to prepare myself for a practice praxis exam. I really need

to concentrate on studying for more practice praxis exams. However, I must wait for the summer

when school (my job) is finished and my courses this semester end. I am aware that I will need

to pay for those extra practice tests and tutoring sessions, which I don’t mind doing. I need to be

mentally prepared and not stressed out over my busy schedule. I also plan to purchase updated

praxis preparation books.
