Production Diary

Tuesday 23rd May 2023

Today I was put in a group who will be the production crew of our short-film. I was
placed in a group with Will Hoggarth. To begin the pre production stage me and Will
started a mindmap on the qualities that are needed for a production crew to create
the best product, to do this it is necessary to have qualities such as good
communication skills. My role in the group today was to come up with short-film
ideas with Will Hoggarth and create them into a document and come up with multiple
ideas with explanations. Also today I worked with Will on the Treatment document
where we went in depth on the idea that we picked and checked with the teacher.
We discussed the beginning, middle and end.
What went well was that we completed the mindmap of the qualities a production
crew needs to create a good product. Also the ideas for a short-film was completed
today and one was picked to be used as well as this me and Will Hoggarth began on
the treatment document.
What didn't go well today is that it was difficult to come up with ideas for a short-film
and that was the only hurdle.
If i was to do something differently i would have done the mind map document
differently by this I mean change the format to look like a mindmap.
Today I learned what is necessary for a production crew to work well together.
On this day i worked safely as i followed all safety measures included within my risk
assessments, location recce’s and legal and ethical such as watching cables on the
ground so i do not trip up.

Wednesday 24th may 2023

Today My role was finishing the Treatment document with Will Hoggarth. In the
document I finished the middle section of the short-film synopsis. I also started on a
document about the BBFC and managed to get most of it completed as well as
adding the finishing touch to the treatment sheet which was adding the classification
of our short-film. And finished the location recce and risk assessment at home.
What went well today is that I and Will Hoggarth managed to finish the treatment
document very quickly and that I managed to nearly complete the BBFC document
as well, I also believed that me and Will Hoggarth worked well together.
Today the only thing that didn't go well is that I wasn't able to finish the whole BBFC
document, however getting it almost done was good.
There is nothing I would have done differently but if I had to I would have written a bit
more detail on the Treatment document.
Today I learned an in depth definition of each age classifications for films and what
mine and Will's short-film classification should be which happens to be a PG.
I worked safely today following my risk Assessments while I was working in the
media editing room. I also followed the location recce's and legal and ethical.
Monday 5th June 2023
I was not in on this day

Tuesday 6th June 2023

Today me and Will both worked on the shot list together putting in 50 shots each
ready for the production of the short-film. I worked on one half and worked on 50
different shots and Will Hoggarth also did this. I thought that during this it went well
because I managed to get most of it done in one day, however what did not go well
is that I wanted it to be completed in one day. If I was to do it again I would have
made sure to take more care and think what shots would look best. I learned what is
necessary to be able to start film production and what shots and angles look best in
certain situations. We worked safely by following all the information given on the
location recce's, risk assessments and legal and ethical.

Wednesday 7th June 2023

On this day my role in the group was to try and finish off the shot list with Will
Hoggarth doing his half as well. What went well is that I had put effort and thought
into what shots would fit each scene well. What did not go well is that we did not
finish the shot list on this day and will have to do it a different day. What I would do
differently is I would spend more free time to complete this. What I learned today is
that I need to do good quality work quicker. Today I followed the safety measures
fully to avoid any mishaps.

Thursday 8th June 2023

Monday 12th June 2023

My role in the group today was to finish my half of the shot list. What went well is that
I managed to finish off the shot list today and I could start work on the storyboard.
What went well is that I finished the shot list as well as starting the storyboard. What
did not go well is that I did not manage to finish off all of the information needed on
the storyboard. What I would do differently is I would have started the drawings first
and then written down the information afterwards. What I learned today is that to
create a short film a storyboard is necessary to be able to film. I followed the safety
measures on the location recce and risk assessment so no-one could get injured.

Tuesday 13th June 2023

On this day my role was to get my half of the storyboard finished while Will finished
off his half of the shot list. What went well is I managed to get most of the storyboard
information wise complete and Will managed to finish the shot list. What did not go
well is that I still had to finish off the information side of the storyboard and still
needed to do the drawings. What I did learn is that a massive amount of Information
is needed before the filming of a film can begin. What I would do differently is I would
have worked on the drawings first. I followed the risk assessment by minding where I
was going to not injure myself, i also followed the location recce to know where
things within college are and followed the laws in legal and ethical.
Wednesday 14th June 2023
On this day my role was to finish my half of the storyboard while Will did his half.
What went well was I managed to complete most of it including the drawings. What
did not go well is that this work was supposed to be completed fully today.what I
learned is that I needed to work quicker to be able to keep up with the production of
a film. What I would do differently is I would have done the drawing first so it would
be done quicker. I followed the risk assessment by minding where I was going to not
injure myself, i also followed the location recce to know where things within college
are and followed the laws in legal and ethical.

Thursday 15th June 2023

On this day my role was making sure that the story board was completed as well as
the legal and ethical. What went well is that I managed to complete both pieces of
work today. What did not go well is that I was not ready to film as Will had not
finished his half of work. What I would do differently is I would have completed legal
and ethical earlier on in the course.What I learned today is that the legal and ethical
side of film production is similar to radio productions legal and ethical. I followed the
risk assessment by minding where I was going to not injure myself, i also followed
the location recce to know where things within college are and followed the laws in
legal and ethical.

Wednesday 21st June 2023

On this I came in and found out me
and Will had a new member of the
group which was Nicole. Will and
Nicole the day before managed to
record some shots for the film. On
this day it was my role to help out
with the production of the film by
filming shots. What went well was
that we managed to get most of the
shots filmed. What didn't go well is
that I struggled to use the camera
at first as I had never used that exact camera before. What I would've done
differently is I would. What I learned is that the shooting side of film production is fun
and creative as you have to use different ways to get the right angles. Me and the
production crew followed the risk assessment by minding where we were going to
not injure ourselves, i also followed the location recce to know where things within
college are and followed the laws in legal and ethical.

Thursday 22nd June 2023

My role in the production crew today was primarily filming different shots and working
with the production crew to decide what looks best. I used the camera previously so i
knew how to set up the tripod easily and the tracking set
and the camera as a whole. What went well is that today we
managed to finish the filming of the short film meaning we
were able to start on a sheet that same day called the
logging sheet and managed to get it done the same day.
What didn't go well is that we did not have all the shots in
order beforehand as we filmed without going in order which
made the task more tedious.
What I learned is that you have to log every shot that was
done and write what happened in each one.

On this day my role was to complete my own editing

decision list. What went well was I managed to do most of it in
a few hours. What did not go well is that you needed to
complete this to be able to start editing of the short film and could not. What I would
do differently is that I would film the short film in order so it makes this process
easier. What I learned is that you have to create a sheet for what shots you are
going to edit and what edits we're going to make. I followed the risk assessment by
minding where I was going to not injure myself, i also followed the location recce to
know where things within college are and followed the laws in legal and ethical.

Monday 26th june 2023

On this day i still had to complete
the Editing decision list which i
managed to get completed by
the end of the day and this is a
solo task. What went well today
is that I finished the editing
decision list and managed to
carry onto the editing process. What did not go well is that I should have started
editing sooner than I did. What I would do differently is I would have done more work
at home so I would have started editing sooner. What I learned today is that more
editing techniques are needed for Short films than radio advertisements. I followed
the risk assessment by minding where I was going to not injure myself, i also
followed the location recce to know where things within college are and followed the
laws in legal and ethical.

Tuesday 27th June 2023

On this day my role in the
group was to edit my
version of the short film
which I managed to
complete quickly. I did this
by putting everything in
order and cutting certain
sections of each shot to
make them link better
together. My role was also
to complete the PDP sheet
and swot sheet . What
went well was I completed
all of these as I worked hard and fast to get them all completed.What didn't go well is
that I should have finished the day before. What I would do differently is I would have
done more work at home to give me more breathing room in college to get things
completed. What I learned today and throughout every other day is that the
production process of creating a short film is difficult but really fun and rewarding. I
followed the risk assessment by minding where I was going to not injure myself, i
also followed the location recce to know where things within college are and followed
the laws in legal and ethical.
