METHODOLOGY:
Methodology established per DCM C-58 Rev. 0 (Auxiliary, Turbine & Containment Building
Floors: Structural Analysis & Evaluation of Building Floors Subjected to Accidental Drop of
Heavy Loads) will be used to qualify the concrete slabs for impact loads due to accidental
Heavy Load Drop.
ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA:
Concrete at elevation 140 ft of containment building in heavy load exclusion zone area within
the load path must satisfy requirements of accidental load drop per DCM C-58 Rev. 0 (Auxiliary,
Turbine & Containment Building Floors: Structural Analysis & Evaluation of Building Floors
Subjected to Accidental Drop of Heavy Loads).

CALCULATION:
Structural Response by Energy Balance Method
The strain energy required to stop the target missile combination is the sum of the kinetic energy of the
missile and the target masses at the end of the duration of the impact.
Where:
Mm= mass of missile, lbs = W weight of item, lbs / 32.2 ft/sec 2
The effective target mass during impact varies from a low value at initial contact and generally increases
to an upper limit during or at the end of the impact duration. The average effective mass can, however,
be estimated using the following formula:
Where:
Dx= maximum missile contact dimension in the x direction (longitudinal axis for beams or slabs), ft
Dy= maximum missile contact dimension in the y direction (transverse to long. axis for beams or slabs), ft
Per reference 23, page 4-1; the average moment of inertia I for cracked concrete calculated as follows:
Where:
; ; ; ; ;
;
I g = moment of inertia of gross concrete section about its center (neglecting steel areas), in 4
The yield displacement value for a slab with fixed or free supports on all four sides and a load at
the center is:
Where:
(M u) + = (M u) - = )
X e = yield displacement,
The yield displacement value for a beams/one-way slabs with fixed or free supports:
For simply supported beam:
Refer to attachment “A”, Palfinger components will enter the heavy load exclusion zone over the Steam
Generator cubical concrete wall (top of the wall at elevation 151 ft) and will be carried over concrete
cubical walls to their final destination. Maximum lift height (bottom of lifted component) will be at
elevation 190 ft. Therefore we will postulate a load drop of 22000 lbs from height of 191-151 = 40 ft on
top of the wall to envelope all of the Palfinger components.

Refer to drawings 438233 & 438234 & referenced concrete lift drawings, the most critical case for
cubical walls is for the wall in N-S direction which is mainly supported by a 7 ft deep concrete beam at
elevation 140 ft. This 7 ft deep concrete beam is 4.25 ft wide with 18 # 11 reinforcing rebars at the
bottom and 5 # 11 bars at the top. We will consider a simply supported span of 30 ft for this beam.
SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAM
BEAM DATA
T: depth of beam, ft 7
d: Inches 76
f'c: psi 6330
Fy (reinforcing):psi 74890
Ec(concrete):ksi 4535
Span: ft 30
width: ft 4.25
Installation of Palfinger crane between RCP 1-1 & RCP 1-2 is acceptable compared to above calculation.
To envelope the accidental drop of concrete snubber block on concrete at elevation 140 ft we will
conservatively investigate the following heavy load drop/slab condition :

To envelope all of heavy loads for all slabs, the following load, height of drop, impact diameter and slab
thicknesses will be considered:
CONCLUSION:
Based on results of these calculations; areas described blow are adequate for accidental load drops as
described in summary table below:
For Palfinger crane assembly consists of:
Enter the heavy load exclusion zone inside the polar crane rails over the concrete areas only.
Maximum lift height (bottom of lifted component) not to exceed elevation 143 ft
MARGIN ASSESSMENT
All ductility ratios are below the allowable ductility limits, therefore there is no impact on the design
margins.
