ADOPT A STRUGGLING READING PROGRAM

Accomplishment Report

APRIL 2023
The Sta. Lucia North Central School fully supports the Department of Education's ADOPT A
STRUGGLING READER PROGRAM. Through the leadership of our good principal Mrs. Joan G.
Toquero, she gathered us to talk and get our opinion and strategy on how we can help our learners
improve their reading and writing. All of us teachers agreed that we would use our free time to train
slow learners. We thought of strategies and materials that can be used to engage learners. One of
the things we thought of using was the pop-up that contained words and pictures. Besides the
pictures and words, the pop-up is also colorful so that the learner can appreciate reading it.

All Teacher Advisers identified learners who are relatively slow readers. As a relieving teacher, I
joined for this program. I spend my free time at noon to practice reading with identified learners using
the pop-up.
The learners are excited to come to me to practice reading. There were even days when they arrived
ahead of me at noon. This month of April, I have seen my reading students improve in identifying
letters, syllables and words.

reading the said words.
On the other hand, the teacher focused her attention to the very slow readers. She
administered one on one reading to the Very slow readers to find out how far the reading

ADOPT A STRUGGLING READING PROGRAM

Accomplishment Report
Sta. Lucia North Cenral School conducted a Remedial Reading Program for struggling readers. The program is
designed to provide the learners the reading opportunities especially those who were marked as non-readers, very slow
readers and slow readers as shown in the the result of the pre-assessment conducted in each grade level.

In this connection, as a result of the reading assessment conducted by the teacher, there were 5 learners in
Grade Five Mapagmahal who were assessed as very slow readers and 2 slow readers.
The teacher address it by giving reading remediation for these learners. Through this reading remediation, the teacher
found out that there were lots of improvement on the part of the struggling readers.
This April, the teacher used again the same interventions she did the previous month. She let the learners to
circle or find certain words that they could not understand every time they appear on the page. These words were put
by the teacher in the Pop Up Book, which is one of the reading materials she used for the learners to read until they can
read them correctly. By using the Pop Up Book, there is a great improvement in the reading level of the learners.

ADOPT A STRUGGLING READING PROGRAM

Grade 5- MAPAGMAHAL

Accomplishment Report for the Month of May

The best way to get better at reading is just to do it! As they always say, “practice makes perfect”, right? This is
the reason why Grade Five Mapagmahal continues the reading remediation for very slow and slow readers.

The remedial reading was conducted 30 minutes every week from Monday to Thursday to ensure the concept of
consistency, continuity, and conditioning of the learners. At same time, varied reading texts were provided by the
teacher. After the session, the learners were provided of another set of reading materials that they can bring home, so
they can practice reading at home. The said materials will be read the next day, therefore, the learners need to practice
reading them. Moreover, varied instructional materials were utilized like charts and pop-up book. Through these
interventions, the learners are now confident to read sentences and simple paragraphs right after the session.

The giving of various remedial reading materials that the learners can bring home and practice reading them is a
good intervention to consider.

Accomplishment Report for the Month of June

Listening and watching the correct pronunciation of words and sentences is very helpful for learners to learn
how to read properly.

For this month, the teacher used the auditory and visual learning style. It allows the learners the opportunity to
visually experience the reading material by having learners practice correct reading to retain in their minds. They were
able to hear excellent reading, gaining an understanding of what excellent reading feels like. The learners followed along
with the teacher in the video as he/she reads the words and sentences aloud.

Another strategy adopted by the teacher is the use of pop-up books for the learners to have drill as to some
words that they can encounter in the reading text. The drill method through pop-up book stimulates the mind by making
them give quick and immediate responses. The use of pop-up book helps the leaners to read familiar words
independently. It is now easier for the leaners to read the text they are reading because they can already read those
difficult words they find in the text.
