1. Language meaning can be analysed at several levels.

Ý nghĩa của ngôn ngữ có thể được phân tích ở nhiều khía cạnh.

2. Semantics concentrates on the meaning that comes from linguistic knowledge,

while pragmatics concentrates on those aspects of meaning that cannot be
predicted by linguistic knowledge alone and takes into account our knowledge
about the physical and social world.

Ngữ nghĩa học tập trung vào ý nghĩa được bắt nguồn từ hiểu biết ngôn ngữ, trong
khi đó nghĩa dụng học tập trung vào những khía cạnh ý nghĩa có xem xét đến hiểu
biết của chúng ta về tự nhiên và xã hội mà không thể chỉ suy đoán bằng hiểu biết
ngôn ngữ.

3. The focus of pragmatic analysis is on the meaning of speakers’ utterances rather

than on the meaning of words or sentences.

Trọng tâm của phân tích nghĩa dụng học là về hàm ý trong phát ngôn của người nói
thay vì ý nghĩa của từ hoặc câu.

4. Utterances need not consist of complete sentences. Each utterance is a unique

1. Anh/ chị hãy đưa ra nghĩa ngữ nghĩa và nghĩa ngữ dụng cho câu nói: “It’s
cold in here” trong 2 ngữ cảnh dưới đây:

(Provide a semantic meaning (semantic paraphrase (SP) and a pragmatic meaning

(pragmatic paraphrase (PP) for “It’s cold in here” in 2 diferent contexts, (a) and (b)
below)

(a) Mike and Annie are in the living room. Mike asks Annie whether she’d like to
eat dinner in the living room or the kitchen. Annie replies: It’s cold in here.

(b) The Queen and her butler, James, are in the drawing room. The window is
open. The Queen says: It’s cold in here.

=> The semantic meaning in context (a) and (bi) is the temperature in the living
room and in the drawing room is frigid.
=> The pragmatic meaning:
- The implied meaning of The Queen in context (a) really means: Let’s eat in the
kitchen because it is cold in the living room, or it can be that let shut the windowif
they eat dinner in the living room.
- The implied meaning of Annie in context (b) really means: She or he should
shut the window

2. Anh/ chị hãy tạo ra ngữ cảnh thứ 3 cho câu nói “It’s cold in here”để có
nghĩa ngữ dụng khác với các nghĩa ngữ dụng ở mục (1).

(Now provide a third context for “It’s cold in here” which would yield a third and
different pragmatic meaning from the 2 contexts in the first execise.)

=> Mary and James are in the greenhouse. Mary wonders why her pleasure fihshes
dead. James replies: It’s cold in here.
