• Pogrom is a Russian word which, when directly translated, means “to wreak havoc.”
• The term came into widespread usage after the riots of 1881 and 1882 in the Russian
Empire.
Pogroms
• It was mostly carried out in Russia in the 19th Century. Sites of major pogroms in Ukraine
during the Russian Civil War, 1918–
• First Pogram was reported back in 1821 in Odessa 1921
• 14 Jews were killed in response. The initiators of 1821 pogroms were Local
Greeks
• Between 1918 and 1921 an estimated 100,000 Jewish people were killed, maimed or
tortured in pogroms in Ukraine.
• Hundreds of Jewish communities were burned to the ground and hundreds of thousands of
people were left homeless and destitute, including orphaned children.
• A number of groups were responsible for these brutal attacks, including the Volunteer Army,
a faction of the Russian White Army.
Influence Of Pogroms
• Two million Jews fled the Russian Empire between 1880 and 1920, with many going to the
United Kingdom and United States.
• They changed perceptions among Russian Jews and indirectly gave a significant boost to the
early Zionist movement.
• In reaction to the pogroms and other oppressions of the Tsarist period, Jews increasingly
became politically active.
• Jewish self-defense leagues, which stopped the pogromists in certain areas led to a strong
embrace of Zionism, especially by Russian Jews.
Balfour Declaration
Background:
• Several months earlier to the fall of Beer Shaba (city in south of Jerusalem), talks between a
Jewish research chemist, Chaim Weizmann and the British Foreign Secretary, Arthur James
Balfour, aimed to facilitate the establishment of a ‘National home for the Jews in Palestine’
• Several drafts of a declaration drawn up at Balfour’s request were made in the summer of 1917
• After 5 years, Herzel convened the First Zionist Congress to promote idea of Jewish
settlement in Palestinian Land but failed to convince Europe.
• The Turkish Sultan Abdul Hamid, the absolute ruler of the decaying and poor Ottoman
Empire, rebuffed Herzl in following words:
“I cannot sell one square foot of Palestine. Palestine is the patrimony of Muslims, and I will not sell it
for the gold of the world. Let the Jews keep their millions. If the Empire is divided, maybe the Jews
will get it for nothing, but only on our dead bodies”.
Sykes-Picot Agreement 1916:
• An agreement between French and British
diplomats to carve out respective spheres of
influence in the eastern part of the Arab world.
• At the same time, diplomats Mark Sykes and Francois Georges Picot were meeting in secret talks to divide the
Middle East.
• Allied planes were dropping leaflets on Arab towns and cities, reaffirming Allied support for Arab independence.
British Mandate
• On the evening of 31 October 1917, with overwhelming force, the British army over-ran the small
Turkish garrison in the town of Beer Sheba in a surprise attack from the south and east.
• The British invading army was known as the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) led by General
Allenby.
• The British invading army consisted of 150,000 soldiers from the British Dominions, which included
British, Australian, New Zealand and Indian regiments.
• The Turkish flag opposite the mosque was lowered and the Union Jack was raised.
Anglo-French Declaration of 1918
• The British Foreign Secretary brushed aside the 1918 Anglo-French Declaration to set up
free and independent governments in the liberated Arab region in favor of the
establishment of a Jewish national home in Palestine.
• Balfour was convinced that supporting Zionism was a sound colonial enterprise and the
Jews would be its best managers.
Mass Immigration / Settlement Of Jews In
Palestine
• First Aliyah (1882-1903): approximately 35,000 Jews immigrated to the Ottoman Palestine.
• Third Aliyah (1919-1923): 40,000 Jews, mainly from Eastern Europe arrived in the wake of World
War I.
• Fourth Aliyah (1924-1929): 82,000 Jews arrived, many as a result of increasing anti-Semitism in
Poland and throughout Europe
• Fifth Aliyah(1929-1939): with the rise of Nazism in Germany, a new wave of 250,000 immigrants
arrived.
• Aliyah Bet (1933-1948): he British government limited Jewish immigration to Mandatory Palestine
with quotas, and following the rise of Nazism to power in Germany, illegal immigration to
Mandatory Palestine commenced
Arab – Israel War 1967
Causes
1. Israel was not all content with the land it got in 1948.
2. It had long borders(981km) with Arab “enemies”, and some of its major cities
were only 15 km away from the borders, making it more vulnerable to any
attack.
3. Israel was looking for more land in order to absorb more settlers.
• Israel considered it as an act of war and started to deploy huge forces along Syrian
borders in May 1967.
The Six-Day War Of 1967 And Its Consequences!

Bigotry of World in the light of International Laws &
The Backlash of Supporting Palestinian Cause in the
West
For those protesting against Israel’s war in Gaza, free speech is becoming more
and more dangerous.
1. In the US, pro-Palestinian rallies during the past week have faced heavy
blowback from critics who have accused organizers of justifying Hamas
violence
3. A 6 year old Palestinian American boy killed in anti Muslim attack in Illinois
state by a 71 year old instigator.
Bigotry of World in the light of International Laws &
The Backlash of Supporting Palestinian Cause in the
West
1. A Chicago chapter of Black Lives Matter (BLM) has been criticized for a Social Media Post in
the wake of the Hamas attacks that depicted a parachuter with a flag of Palestine. The post has
since been taken down.
2. A group of students at Harvard published a pro-Palestinian letter in which the writers held the
“Israeli regime entirely responsible for all unfolding violence.” The university took several days
to address it.. The student statement, posted on Saturday, was swiftly rebuked by some
professors as well as former Harvard president Larry Summers, who wrote in a post on X,
formerly known as Twitter, that he was "sickened" by it.
Bigotry of World in the light of International Laws &
The Backlash of Supporting Palestinian Cause in the
West
1. Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt told CNN in an interview this week that the
response of corporate America had been “disappointing at best, disastrous at worst”.
2. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year, the corporate world’s
response was loud and clear. The response of big business to the Israel-Hamas conflict has
been muted in comparison. Many household name brands that adopted a vocal stance on the
Ukraine war have declined to weigh in on the Middle East conflict.
US Military aid to Israel
• US President Joe Biden pledged in Congress to boost military aid to Tel Aviv and declared his
“unwavering support for Israel’s security, today and always” following his visit to Israel, the largest
recipient of US foreign aid, amid the Israel-Gaza conflict.
• Tracking US military aid to Israel over the years, US has sent Israel more than $120bn military aid over
the past seven decades
Overview of top Military support given by US to Israel
• Fighter Aircraft: Israel has received advanced fighter aircraft from the United States, including
variants of the F-16 and F-15. These aircraft are equipped with sophisticated avionics, weapons
systems, and electronic warfare capabilities, making them some of the most advanced fighter
planes in the region.
• Tanks: Israel has received M1 Abrams main battle tanks from the United States. The M1 Abrams
is a highly capable and heavily armored tank, which has provided Israel with a significant
advantage in ground warfare.
• Missiles and Missile Defense Systems: The United States has supplied Israel with various missile
systems, including the Patriot missile defense system and the Iron Dome, a short-range missile
defense system designed to intercept and destroy incoming rockets and artillery shells
Overview of top Military support given by US to Israel
• Artillery and Artillery Systems: Israel has received artillery pieces and systems, which enhance
its firepower and long-range strike capabilities.
• Naval Vessels: Israel has acquired naval vessels, including missile boats and submarines from
Germany, with financial support from the United States, which enhance its naval capabilities.
• Precision-Guided Munitions (PGMs): The U.S. has supplied Israel with precision-guided
munitions, such as laser-guided bombs and GPS-guided missiles. These munitions improve the
accuracy of Israel's airstrikes and reduce collateral damage.
• Electronics and Intelligence Equipment: Israel has benefited from U.S. technology and
intelligence-sharing, which includes advanced electronic warfare equipment and intelligence
assets that enhance its situational awareness and electronic capabilities.
This policy is based on the belief that a militarily strong Israel contributes to regional stability and
security
“Israel is Apartheid” by Amnesty International
• Apartheid is a violation of public international law, a grave violation of internationally protected human
rights, and a crime against humanity under international criminal law.
• Amnesty International’s new investigation shows that Israel imposes a system of oppression and
domination against Palestinians across all areas under its control: in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian
Territories, and against Palestinian refugees, in order to benefit Jewish Israelis. This amounts to apartheid
as prohibited in international law.
• The international organization Human Rights Watch accused Israel and its Western allies of hypocrisy and
the use of double standards regarding issues related to the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli crisis.
• This statement is given by the deputy head of Human Rights Watch, Tom Porteous, in which he emphasizes
that while the United States and the European Union sharply condemned Russia’s actions in the Ukrainian
crisis, there was not the slightest criticism of the Israeli leadership in connections with IDF actions in the
Gaza Strip.
Ukrainian Situation vs Palestine ‘Double Standards’
• How does Israel have an "unquestionable right" to "defend itself" from the
Palestinians whose territory it occupies and controls? How does Russia then not
have an equal claim to be "defending itself" when it hits Ukrainian cities in
“retaliation” for Ukrainian strikes intended to liberate its territory from
Russian occupation?
• 43 of those vetoes were used to shield Israel from accountability for similar war crimes and
human rights violations, each of those being the sole veto against the proposed resolution.
• However, the United States has continually screened Israel from global condemnation and
intermittently interrupted international efforts to hold the Israeli government accountable
for genocidal crimes under the UN Charter and international law.
• US administrations have time and again defended Israeli atrocities on Palestinians in the
name of ‘Israel’s right to defend itself’ when Israel is the encroacher on the Palestinian soil.
• The two drastically antipodal narratives are the manifestation of American duplicity.
Stance of Pakistan on Gaza-Israel Conflict
Pakistan’s caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani has condemned the Israeli bombing
on the besieged Gaza Strip, equating the actions as “genocide”.
He said:
• Pakistan does not recognize the state of Israel and has historically said that the occupied
Palestinian territories must be vacated in line with the UN resolutions on a two-state
solution.
