5.4 STEEL BEAM THEORY

.We have seen th~t the total moment of resistance of a doubl
=-"orced beam
reuu' .
consists
.
of two terms : the moment
.
of res1stance
. Y
Mi of the comp!ess10n concrete and the. corresponding tensile steel
(A,1) to balance 1t,h and the.moment
. of. resistanceM2ofthecompress·ton '
steel (Ase) and ·t e remammg tens1I.e steel (Asrz) to balance it: In
the steel beam_ theory,_ the concrete 1s completely neglected and the
moment of ~es1st.an.ce ·1s t~:n equal ~o t~e moment of steel couple,
taking the perm1ss1~1~. value :>f s1resses m compressive steel equal
10 permissible value m tensile steel, a 1,. . . \

· M =Asr,t(d-dc) =An,O'n(i~dc) · ... (5.8) ·

Thus, in the steel beam theory, the concrete serves only as .:
a web\and the ,co~pressive and tensile steels as the flanges of an I
imaginary steel jois~ ·having equal area of both the flanges. However, . .
there seems to be no justification in neglecting the compressive area '·
·of concrete and .permitting the stress in compressive steel equal. to I .
· stress in tensile steel, as the stress in concrete would pass the limit
of the safe working stress. However, ·the method can be used to
find the approximate value of the moment of resistance of the section
specially when the area of compression steel is equal to or more
than the area of the tensile steel and when these areas are within
2 to .3 percent of the _cross-sectional area. ·
