- Class, do you have an assignment? - None Maam.

- Before we go on to our discussion, I’ll

first present to you our objectives for
today’s lesson.
- Will you please read the objectives? Objectives:
1. Define growing media and its different
types;
2. Discuss the purpose of different
growing media and its characteristics;
3. Apply different kinds of growing media
through actual mixing of growing

B. Review

- Before I start with our discussion, let - Plant propagation is the process of

plant propagation is?

- Thank you. There are two kinds of

propagation, the sexual method and
asexual method.

- Any volunteer from the class who can

describe how plants reproduce - Maam, by seed propagation! The most
sexually? common method of propagating trees
as it is the easiest is by seeds.

- How about for asexual reproduction? -

- Asexual reproduction has plants

layering, budding, tissue culture and
grafting.
C. Motivation
- I have here jumbled letters. All you
have to do is to guess the hidden
word. I’ll be giving clues for you to
easily guess it. Are you ready class? - Yes maam!
- This is now the jumbled letters.

- Second clue, it is the union of two
plants’ part and grows as one.

- Let’s check if your answers is correct.

- Yes! Very Good! Exactly! 
- Your answers from the activity have
something to do with our topic this
afternoon which is grafting.
D. Procedure
- Okay! Let us start with discussion.
- Anyone who has an idea of what - Maam, grafting is connecting parts of

- Yes. Another?

- Class, grafting is the art of joining

parts of plants together in such a
manner that will unite and continue
their growth as one plant. By the way
class, grafting is one of the techniques
in asexual propagation.

- In grafting, you don’t only connect

parts of plants together but there are
two parts of plants to be considered.
The SCION which is the short piece if
detached shoot with one to several - Maam, does it mean that scion is the
dormant buds. upper portion of graft combination?

- Yes. Very nice observation.

- Second is the ROOTSTOCK, which is

the lower portion of graft which
develops into the root system of the
grafted plant.

- Another one is the INTERSTOCK; it is a

piece of stem inserted between scion
and rootstock. It is used to avoid any
incompatibility between scion and
rootstock and/or to take advantage of
its growth controlling properties.

- I hope you understand the parts.

- Now, how useful is grafting? Can you - Disease resistant rootstocks

give benefits of using grafted plants? - Stronger root systems
- Yes! Those are the advantages gained - Dwarfing capabilities
for using grafting as one way of
asexual reproduction.
- There are different types of grafting -
namely:
1. Whip or tongue grafting
2. Splice grafting
3. Side grafting
4. Cleft grafting
5. Bridge grafting
6. Bark grafting
7. Saddle grafting

- Any volunteer from the class to - Whip or tongue grafting is most

equal size and preferably no more than
½ inch in diameter.
- How about the splice grafting?
- Splice grafting, a method of grafting by
cutting the ends of the scion and stock
completely across and obliquely, in
such a way that the sections are of the
same shape, then lapping the ends so
that the one that was cut on the
surface exactly fits the other. And

usually done on potted rootstock.
- Very good!  Another type? Anyone?
- Cleft grafting, it is a method for top
working both flowering and fruiting
tress in order to change varieties.
- Nice  how about the next type?
- Bridge grafting, it is used to bridge a
diseased or damage area of a plant,
usually at or near the base of the
trunk.

activity for you.
- Steps for Grafting:
1. Choose your cultivar and your
rootstock.
2. Amputate your rootstock.
3. Cleave your rootstock.
4. Prepare the scions.
5. Insert the scions into the rootstock.
6. Seal the graft.
7. Look after the graft.
- Did you understand how grafting is
done?

- Yes Maam.
E. Culminating Activities

1. Guided Practice (Formative Assessment)

(3 mins.)

- As a form of assessment, you have to

arrange the steps chronologically by - The student will answer the quiz
numbering it from 1-7. Write your
answer on the answer sheet provided.

______ Cleave your rootstock.

______ Look after the graft.
______ Insert the scions into the
rootstock.
______ Amputate your rootstock.
______ Seal the graft.
______Choose your cultivar and your
rootstock.
______Prepare the scions.

2. Closing Activities( 2 mins.)

1. Define grafting and identify the steps in

grafting.

2. Identify the importance and its steps in

grafting

3. Organize small group and assign tasks to

group members to complete the grafting
activity.

Summary

- One of the methods of plant

reproduction in asexual propagation is
grafting. Grafting is the union of the
cambium layers of a parent tree (stock)
and a desired variety (scion) in such a
way that the two form a solid, growing
unit. And one of the importance of
using grafted plant is to achieve the
desired variety of fruit. There are
different types of grafting and one of
the activities performed by the student
is the cleft grafting.

* Give values learned

Aside from those benefits that were discussed,

can you cite personal advantage of using
grafting as a way of plant propagation

IV. EVALUATION ( 10 mins.)

G – To practice the method of asexual propagation in their community

R- An agricultural technician who provide information about methods/techniques of
propagation/ plant reproduction
A- Crop producers and other small farmers in the selected area
S- Some fruit trees bear fruits too long about 10 years
P-Apply the steps of grafting and let them know the benefits of grafted pili tree.
S- Your work will be evaluated according on how you follow the steps and
completed within 10 mins.

V. Assignment/ Agreement( 1 min.)

1. Visit a nearest botanical garden in your town and identify other plants that can
be grafted.
2. Report to the class your observation.
