B. Motivation
Nathan has decided to go camping with some friends. While out on a hike, they reach the top of a ridge and look down at
the trail behind them. In the distance, they can see their camp. They want to find out how far they’ve travelled.
Is there a way to do that? If yes, how will they do it?
From here, teacher will now relate this illustration to her lesson.
C. Unlocking of Difficulty:
Did you know that?
Using a slide deck presentation, teacher will briefly discuss the history of Trigonometry.
D. Activity 1:
Activity Entitled: Mystery Words
Pick all words that match with the given words.
1. Elevation Rise Above view
2. Depression Below vision fall
3. Sight
E. Activity 2
Activity Entitled: Identify Me!
Given the figure, identify the segment that represents the line of sight and identify the angles that represent the angle of elevation
or angle of depression. The first two were done for you.

F. Analysis
1. From the activity, how did you identify the line of sight, angle of elevation and angle of depression?
2. In your own words, describe line of sight, angle of elevation and angle of depression.
3. Do you think you can use these ideas in your daily life?
4. Give and illustrate situation in your life involving angle of elevation and angle of depression.
G. Abstraction
Line of sight – is an imaginary line that connects the eye of an observer to the object being
observed
Angle of Elevation - an angle from the horizontal to line of sight of the observer to the object
above
Angle of Depression - an angle from the horizontal to the line of sight of the observer to the
object below Angle of Elevation & Angle of Depression

Practice Exercises
1. A tower is 15.24 m high. At a certain distance away from the tower, an observer determines that the angle of elevation to
the top of it is 41. How far is the observer from the base of the tower?
2. An airplane is flying at a height of 4 kilometers above the ground. The distance along the ground from the airplane to the
airport is 6 kilometers. What is the angle of depression from the airplane to the airport?
H. Application
Using slide deck presentation, teacher will briefly discuss the different applications of the concept of angle of elevation and angle
of depression in real life situation.
I. Final Task
Using differentiated instruction, ask students to work by group. Each group will be given a specific task based from their
inclination.
Group 1: SOLVERS
Solve the problem.
A hiker is 400 meters away from the base of the tower. The angle of elevation to the top of the tower is 46. How high is the
tower?
(Show an illustration of the problem. Choose a representative to present your output)
Group 2: ILLUSTRATORS
Draw My Problem! Draw the pictures presented by the information in the problems given (You don’t have to solve the problem,
just draw and color). Clear, neat and accurate illustrations are necessary.
A hiker is 400 meters away from the base of the tower. The angle of elevation to the top of the tower is 46 . How high is the
tower?
(Choose a representative to present your output)
Group 3: WRITERS
Write a Poem for Me! Write a 2-stanza poem that highlights the concept of angle of elevation, angle of depression and line of
sight. Write your pome on the manila paper provided. All members should participate in the presentation.
Group 4: SINGERS
Sing a Song for Me! Create a song that highlights the concept of angle of elevation, angle of depression and line of sight. Be
creative. (You can add beat box, rap, etc.) All members should participate in the presentation.
GRADE 9-MATHEMATICS
Group 5: ACTORS
Create a Story for me! Create a skit that highlights the concept of angle of elevation, angle of depression and line of sight. Be
creative. All members should participate in the presentation.
1. PERFORMANCE/OUTPUT – 20 points
The performance/output shows creativity and resourcefulness. The delivery has great impact to the audience.
2. COLLABORATION – 10 points
The group shows teamwork and cooperation. Tasks are well distributed to all members.
3. ACCURACY / RELEVANCE TO THE TOPIC – 20 points
For solvers, this pertains to the correctness of the solution and answer.
For Illustrators, this pertains to the accuracy of the drawing/illustration.
For singers, writers and actors, this pertains to the relevance of the poem and song to the topic. (the concept was
clearly illustrated).
Each group will be given the chance to evaluate the output of the other group. After the evaluation, each group will get their
average score to provide opportunity for them to use their numeracy skills.
IV. EVALUATION
V. ASSIGNMENT
Illustrate and Solve.
1. An observer in a lighthouse 48.8 m above sea level saw two vessels moving directly towards the lighthouse. He
observed that the angles of depression are 42 and 35. Find the distance between the two vessels, assuming that they are
coming from the same side of the tower.
