Doc: Good morning, Sharee.
JO: So, doc ah ano po ba ang paso o burn injury at may posibilidad ba na ma
apektohan ang ating buto nito sa katawan?
Doc: So, paso o Burn is a medical condition that occurs when the skin or other tissues
of our body are exposed to heat, radiation, electricity, chemicals, or friction. Burn injuries
can range in severity from minor burns that affect only the top layer of our skin to more
severe burns that penetrate deep into the skin and underlying tissues and can even
cause damage to bones and internal organs.
Doc: The severity of a burn injury is typically classified based on its depth and the
percentage of the body surface area that is affected. The most common classification
system is the "Rule of Nines," which divides the body into regions that make up 9% or
multiples of 9% of the total body surface area.
So, First-degree burns only affect the top layer of our skin (epidermis) and cause
redness, pain, and swelling, but generally heal within a few days without leaving scars.
Yung Second-degree burns naman po is extend into the deeper layer of our skin
(dermis) and can cause blistering, pain, and swelling. Third-degree burns are the most
severe and extend through all layers of skin and may also affect underlying tissues and
organs, leading to extensive tissue damage and scarring.
- Debridement: This is a surgical procedure in which dead or damaged tissue is
removed from the burn site to prevent infection and promote healing. The
surgeon may use a scalpel, scissors, or a special tool to remove the damaged
tissue.
- Skin grafting: Skin grafting is a surgical procedure in which healthy skin is taken
from another part of the body (the donor site) and transplanted to the burn site.
The transplanted skin acts as a temporary or permanent covering for the burn
site and helps to promote healing.
- Flap surgery: In some cases, a flap of healthy skin and tissue from a nearby
area may be used to cover the burn site instead of a skin graft. This is known as
flap surgery and is often used when the burn site is large or difficult to cover.
- Tissue expansion: Tissue expansion is a procedure in which a balloon-like
device is inserted under healthy skin near the burn site. Over time, the balloon is
gradually inflated with saline solution to stretch the skin and create a larger area
of healthy skin that can be used for grafting or flap surgery.
- Amputation: In rare cases, amputation may be necessary if the burned area is
too large or damaged to be effectively treated with surgery.
It is important to discuss all available treatment options with a medical professional to
determine the best course of action for treating third-degree burns.
Doc: Burn injuries can lead to various complications, depending on the severity and
location of the burn. Some of the common complications include:
 Infection: Burned skin is more prone to infection because it is damaged and has
a reduced ability to fight off bacteria. Infection can lead to sepsis, a life-
threatening condition.
 Scarring: Burns can cause permanent scarring, which may affect the function
and mobility of the affected area. Severe burns can also result in contractures,
which are permanent tightening of the skin, muscles, and tendons that limit
movement.
 Respiratory problems: Inhalation of smoke or other toxins can lead to
respiratory problems, including lung damage and respiratory failure. In severe
cases, a patient may need to be placed on a ventilator.
 Psychological problems: Burn injuries can have a significant psychological
impact on a patient, leading to depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD).
 Hypovolemia: Hypovolemia is a condition in which the body loses too much
blood or fluid, leading to low blood pressure, decreased organ perfusion, and
shock.
 Hypermetabolism: Hypermetabolism is a condition in which the body uses
energy at an abnormally high rate. This can result in weight loss, muscle wasting,
and increased susceptibility to infection.
 Renal failure: Burn injuries can lead to acute kidney injury due to the release of
myoglobin, a protein found in muscle tissue, which can damage the kidneys.
 Nutritional deficiencies: Burn patients may require specialized nutrition
support, as they often have increased caloric needs and may have difficulty
eating due to pain and other complications. Malnutrition can lead to delayed
healing and other complications.

Doc: Syempre naman meron po, burn injuries can be prevented by taking appropriate
precautions and practicing safety measures in everyday life.
- Install smoke alarms: Ensure that you have smoke alarms installed in your
home, and make sure that they are functioning properly. This will alert you in
case of a fire and help you take the necessary action.
- Keep a fire extinguisher handy: Have a fire extinguisher at home and make
sure you know how to use it. You can prevent a small fire from turning into a
major disaster by extinguishing it early.
- Be careful while cooking: Cooking is a common cause of burn injuries. Always
keep a close eye on the stove and use potholders and oven mitts while handling
hot dishes and cookware.
- Check water temperature: Make sure that the water temperature in your shower
or bathtub is not too hot, especially if you have children or elderly people at
home.
- Be cautious around flammable liquids: Flammable liquids such as gasoline,
lighter fluid, and cleaning solvents can ignite easily. Keep them away from open
flames or heat sources.
- Be careful with electrical appliances: Faulty wiring or damaged electrical
appliances can cause fires. Always make sure that electrical appliances are in
good working condition and keep them away from water.
- Use protective gear: When working with potentially hazardous materials or
equipment, always use protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and masks.
- Educate children: Teach your children about the dangers of fire and how to stay
safe around hot objects and open flames.
By following these precautions, you can reduce the risk of burn injuries and create a
safer environment for yourself and those around you.
