A little circular chapel called a tempietto was built in the courtyard of San Pietro
in Montorio in Rome, supposedly where St. Peter was crucified. Following
Donato Bramante's designs, it was commissioned by Ferdinand and Isabella of
Spain and constructed in 1502.

History:
The church was built on the site of a prehistoric shrine to Saint Satyrus, confessor and sibling of Saints
Ambrose and Marcellina, which the archbishop Anspertus constructed in 879. Instead, the existing
church was constructed between 1472 and 1482 at the request of Duke Gian Galeazzo Sforza and
Duchess Bona di Savoia. Some sources claim that the architect was Donato Bramante, who had just
relocated from the Marche. Recent evidence, however, shows that Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, who
designed the façade, actually did most of the work and that Bramante only played a tiny part. The
sacristy perspective is unquestionably a Bramante creation. Agostino de Fondulis included a terracotta
bust of the architect, according to sources who credit Bramante with designing the entire chapel.
The building includes two aisles with barrel vaults and a nave. At the intersection with the transept, a
hemispherical dome atop the nave. The bell tower still belongs to the Romanesque building that
existed before its renovation in the 1480s. The baptistry that is attached to the church is also from the
15th century.
Initially, white and gold paint was used to beautify the interior. Borgognone painted frescoes on the
walls, which have since been moved to the Pinacoteca di Brera. A terracotta sculpture by Agostino de
Fondulis depicting the Dead Christ adorned the ancient sacellum of San Satiro, which was also covered
with cotto decorations. Several terracotta busts in the sacristy, which is on the main plan and
influenced by the Colleoni Chapel or the Portinari Chapel of Sant'Eustorgio, are also by the same
artist. An altarpiece from Giuseppe Peroni's Extasis of St. Phillip Neri (1764) can be found in the
church.

Such a person was Donato Bramante. Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza of Milan ordered a brand-
new church for his community in 1472. Although he had lofty goals, the location he could
choose from was constrained by the presence of a busy thoroughfare. The church was
uncomfortably too small because the choir, which was the area behind the altar, had to be
cut out. Bramante found an inventive solution despite the difficulty. He painted a trick of the
eye
In the late renaissance and baroque periods, trompe-l'oeil, or architectural optical illusion,
was common, but Bramante elevated the trickery to whole new heights. Standing at the
building's entryway, one has the feeling that the area is considerably deeper and extends
farther than it actually does behind the altar. The reasonably consistent lighting within the
building aids in the optical illusion. As soon as one moves away from the church's central axis,
the illusion, of course, rapidly vanishes; yet, if one turns around, the illusion returns.
Understanding Bramante's Santa Maria presso San Satiro church properly depends on
perspective and faith, just as religious belief itself.
