1. SCOPE

This Method Statement is to describe the methodology for execution of Structural Piles for the
PROPOSED PILING AND SHORING WORKS AT BAHRAIN MARINA PHASE 1 & ZONE 3, to be constructed by
Bahrain Foundation Construction Company.

This is also developed to make concerned people familiarized with the sequence of activities, utilizations
of resources and relevant risk assessment to meet project specifications & contractual obligations.

This task will be carried out on the approved location in conjunction with the shop drawings/authorizes
approved drawings developed for the project.

4. RESPONSIBILITIES

4.1 Project Manager

 Overall Responsible for implementation of the company management systems, policies, and
procedures in line with Project Specification, Drawings, Method Statements, Control Mechanism
and Quality & HSE Programme.
 Preparing and monitoring a resources plan for the whole project duration in coordination with the
site team.

The name and contact number of the Project Engineer including the site staff who will be working for the
4.2 Project Engineer installation of the structural piles shall be submitted and coordinated with the Supervising Consultant Engineer.

 The Project/Site Engineer shall ensure that the activities are being executed in accordance with legal
requirements.

 The Project/Site Engineer shall ensure that legal approvals and permits, which are in BFCC’s
responsibility are received.

 Project/ Site Engineer shall be sure of the provision of the required PPE as well its suitability for the
job and compatible with standards by the HSE Officer assistant.

 Project/ Site Engineer with Safety shall maintain waste manifests and submit to HSE.

 Supervision and managing direct report project personnel.

 Ensuring that the quality of materials and the installation of work are in accordance with the criteria
identified for the project.

 Receive all relevant information regarding design, drawings, and engineering.

 Identify and take the necessary corrective action to improve the progress and I or quality of work.

 Ensure that all the works are carried out as per the specification and the related quality procedures
and QA/QC plan.

 Overseeing quality related activities to control all non‐conformances to avoid occurrence in any
construction activities.

 Inspect all activities while requesting and gaining the approval of the Client/Main Contractor team
(mainly inspectors).

 Maintain inspection and test records complete for any future reference.

 Verify and confirm casting of piles as per program of work and sequence.

 Ensure all tests done comply with engineer's requirements and specification. Report all test failed
conducted by laboratories and to hold all activities that do not conform to contract specifications.

 Engineer shall sign all requests for inspection prior to submittal of the same to the engineer's
Inspectors.

 Prepare, control, and administer inspection and test plans, method statements and checklists and
other quality requirements in conjunction with the project quality.

 Record for any NCR internal & external and copy furnish to the Engineer.

 Maintain a log of all NCR's as well as follow up closure of all outstanding of NCR.

4.3 HSE Officer


 HSE Officer shall monitor and control that the activities are being executed in accordance with legal
HSE requirements.

 HSE Officer shall submit daily observation reports and incident reports to the Project Engineer.

 Coordinate the safety activities between the Client/Main Contractor and Subcontractor.

 Review and approve the subcontractor safety program and procedures, advice and recommend any
corrective actions necessary.

 Patrol the work site periodically to verify that the work is carried out under safe conditions, with no
violations of safety requirements.

 Advice promptly the supervisors and workers of corrective action when any unsafe conditions or
violations are observed.

 Submit accident report to project Engineer.

 Maintain the published safety literature, safety regulations, codes and other communications in
accordance with contract. Advise management of compliance and conditions requiring attention.

 Conduct independent audits to ensure conformance with the established safety program and
determine the effectiveness of individual elements of the program.

 Check each work procedure from the safety point of view and coordinate with the project Engineer
before commencement of work and, or while working.

 Check on the use of all types of personal protective equipment, evaluate effectiveness and suggest
improvements.

 Make thorough analysis of the statistical data through inspection, delineate problem areas, and
make recommendations for solutions.

 Make sure that suitable personal protective equipment is available and in use.

 Ensure that new employees attend safety induction and are properly instructed in precautions to be
taken before they are allowed to start work.

4.4 Surveyor
 Reporting to Project Engineer and to receive all layout plans and approved drawings.

 Coordinate with the project team and guide the team to execute the job as per the approved
layout.

 Responsible for the settings out of coordinates of the working piles and ensure the required
accuracy. Any deviations of the plant‐as‐built coordinates shall be recorded and forwarded to the
Client/Main Contractor.

 Responsible for the as built coordinates/ locations to be incorporated on the as‐built drawing prior
to proceeding with any activities.

 Ensure the calibration of all survey instruments.

 Provide level data and setting outlines.

4.5 Foreman/ Work Supervisor


 Responsible for daily activities and resources (labor, machinery, material etc...) are effectively
utilized and monitored to achieve HSE & Quality requirements.

4.6 Workforce (Labor)


 Carry out their work under direct supervision by their Foreman and charge hand and under
instruction form the Site Engineer to ensure all works are undertaken in a safe manner.

 The workforce shall attend daily Toolbox Talks and morning task briefs prior to starting any new
work.

 The workforce shall receive a full Project briefing and site rules induction prior to commencing any
work on site.

6. DEFINITION

6.1 Rig Machine


 A drilling rig is a machine that creates holes in the earths subsurface. The term "rig" therefore
generally refers to the complex equipment that is used to penetrate the surface of the Earth's crust.

6.2 Crawler Crane


 Consists of an upper carriage mounted on a crawler type undercarriage. The upper deck and
attachments rotate 360º. A crawler crane features either a box or a lattice type straight boom and it
may be equipped with an optional jib (boom extension).

6.3 Casing
 Steel tube used to maintain stability of a pile excavation in unstable ground.

 A steel casing shall be used to support the wall of the drilled hole during drilling in the dry
construction method of a pile.
 When the process encounters water bearing or caving soil formation a temporary casing is placed
into the impervious formation to seal the pile bore from water‐bearing and unstable strata.

6.4 Auger
 Tool consisting of a stem, helical flights and cutting edge or edges for intermittent excavation.

6.5 Tremie pipe


 Concreting pipe, with watertight joints for submerged concrete placement.
 During placement the lower end of the pipe remains immersed into the concrete (3m).

6.6 Drilling Bucket


 Boring tool in the form of a cylindrical container, at the bottom of a Kelly bar, used for intermittent
excavation and incorporating cutting blades or teeth and corresponding openings in its hinged base
plate for the intake of material.

6.7 Reinforcement cage


 Reinforcement for piles comprising longitudinal steel bars arranged to form the generatrices of a
cylinder prism around which inks, hoops or helices are wound and fixed.

 Material Inspection Request (MIR) to be submitted for all materials delivered to the site.

7. STEPS OF WORK

7.1 Surveying
 Setting out of works must be according to Project specification. At the start of the contract,
benchmarks are checked jointly with the Engineer and levels in the tender drawings are verified
accordingly in relationship to surveying department data.

 For ease of reference in daily activities, temporary benchmarks are established and protected on
site. A layout drawing showing the location, coordinates, and values of these benchmarks shall be
produced, duly signed, and submitted to the Engineer for the future records.

 At the beginning, setting of the lines is carried out to check all possible obstructions prior to
commencement of construction.

 Surveying records must keep up to date as they will form the basis for as built records of the works
done on site in conjunction with inspection request.

 Inspection Request to be submitted to obtain Engineer’s approval.

7.2 Mobilisation and site preparation


 After getting the required approvals and site handing over from the relevant Authorities,
mobilization will take place after notifying the authorities with the mobilization plan.

 The construction site should be prepared prior to the commencement of the work.

 Ensure safe mobilization by following the safety control measures as determined in the approved
RA.

 Ensure utility clearance from client before commencement of works.

 Check the working platform level.

 Identify accessibility of site condition to manoeuvre the piling equipment.

 Obtain site clearance of underground services if required.

 Mobilize the drilling rig(s) and cranes after getting the required permit to carry out the construction
of the piles.

 Locate the position of the pile and put an identification number referring to approved drawing.

8. Work Sequence and Methodology

8.1 Sequence of works


The sequence of execution of bored piles shall be:
 Setting out
 Construction of Guide wall
 Construction of Contiguous pile
 Boring & Cleaning
 Reinforcement Installation
 Tremie Pipe
 Concrete pouring
 Casing Withdrawal

8.2 Setting Out


 A well‐qualified surveyor shall be deployed for the process.

 The surveyor shall make sure that all the surveying equipment is calibrated, and valid calibration
certificates are available throughout the execution of the work.

 Temporary benchmarks/control points shall be established on the site and shall be protected from
all the disturbances.

 Pile center points will be marked as per the approved construction shop drawing.
Main Contractor should have specified in the Method Statement the preferred methodology for Pile
driving casing either by method Option 1 or method Option 2. The Method of pile driving shall be further

8.3.1 Driving Casing by Twist Casing Method (Option 1)

 The working platform is prepared at an appropriate level. The piling rig will be positioned at the
platform level.

 Rig’s auxiliary hook shall lift the casing and place it into the adopter of the Kelly bar.

 Position the casing exactly on the survey setting out/ pile center mark up.

 The rotary head then twist the casing downward till top of the casing is approximately 500mm to

1m above the working platform level.

 During driving, the verticality of casing shall be monitored with the help of spirit level (1m length) at
every 2m interval, and the position of casing shall be continuously monitored with reference to the
reference pins.

 The casing shall be driven up the position of hard strata and terminated. The placing and depth of
the casing shall be varying from place to place depending on the soil condition.

8.3.2 Driving Casing by Power Pack Vibro Method (Option 2)


 Crane shall lift the casing with the spare hoist and place into the clamp’s jaws of the casing vibrator
previously lifted with the main hoist.

 The casing vibrator then clamps the casing securely into the jaw area.

 Position the casing on the previously identified pile location pin (with position being ascertained
with respect to the previously placed reference pins).

 The casing vibrator is then switched on to vibrate the casing to pre‐determined depth level (into
hard strata).

 During driving, the verticality of casing shall be monitored with the help of spirit level and the
position of casing shall be continuously monitored with reference to the reference pins.

 During driving, the verticality of casing shall be monitored with the help of spirit level (1m length) at
every 2m interval, and the position of casing shall be continuously monitored with reference to the
reference pins.

 Care must be taken that the casing is vibrated securely into hard strata.

8.3.3 Boring and Cleaning


 The center to center (c/c) distance of bored piles produced with a time‐difference less than 4 hours
should be at least four times the diameter with a minimum of 2m. (EN 1536)

 Drilling will be carried out using drilling rigs at working platform elevation mentioned in IFC
drawings.

 The drilling rig is maneuvered to a stable ground near the casing.

 The auger is attached to the Kelly bar of the rig and lowered inside the casing to start the drilling.

 The auger is rotated in one direction while being lowered.

 The spoils accumulated in the auger during the boring process will be lifted to discharge it outside
the bore.

 During the process of boring the soil condition changes on every layer, when the auger is no longer
suitable to pick up loose and wet soil, it is raised and replaced with the drilling bucket. The drilling
bucket is designed to bore with its teeth at the bottom and contained the loose soil on its
cylinder/bucket.

 The drilling bucket is lifted, and the spoils are discharged outside the casing.

 The process of boring is repeated with the method above until pile toe level is reached as per
approved Drawing.

 The top of casing and pile location will be checked again by the surveyor and counter check by the
engineer representative for reference.

 Depth monitoring will be checked using meter tape with dead weight attached at the end of the
tape to ensure the pile length.

 By this method we can assure the desired depth in every pile.

8.3.4 Reinforcement Installation


 Reinforcement shall comply with the requirement of B.S 4449.

 All reinforcement shall be clean and free from materials that may cause corrosion of the
reinforcement.

 Binding wire shall be approved, and it shall be free from dust and other contaminants.

 Reinforcement cages will be fabricated in the fabrication yard as per the requirement.

 Fabrication will be carried out with minimum reinforcement cover as per the approved shop
drawing.

 MIR (internal inspection by Nass QA/QC Department) shall be raised and secured approval
immediately after delivery of the cage to site, prior to use.

 After the inspection the cage is lifted by the crane and lowered in the center of the casing down the
pile borehole.

 Cages shall be provided with the spacers to maintain the clear cover as per the approved drawing at
min. 3 nos. every 3.0m c/c.

8.3.5 Tremie Pipe


 Tremie Pipe shall be water‐tight including all its joint, minimum internal diameter of tremie pipe: 6
times Dia. max. of aggregate or 150mm whichever is the greater.

 Tremie pipe shall be cleaned of all encrusted concrete or mortar prior to use it.

 The tremie pipe shall be extended to the bottom of the pile toe and lift it 75cm at the
commencement of the concreting.

8.3.6 Concrete Pouring


 Concrete must be mixed according to specifications established by the designers and as per
approved design mix.

 Once the boreholes have been inspected and approved, the concrete shall be poured directly into
the boreholes by way of a tremie tube from the mixer truck fastened to a concrete pump.

 The concrete must be poured without any interruption to avoid previously poured concrete from
hardening and a cold joint forming.

 Test of fresh concrete shall be carried out by an independent testing laboratory for every concrete
delivered at site. All fresh concrete shall be at all approved check points.

 The tremie tube should be withdrawn gradually throughout the concreting process.

8.3.7 Casing Withdrawal


 The extraction shall be carried out while concrete is still of the required workability.

 The removal of the casing will be carried out using a power pack vibratory hammer which is carried
by the crane. The hammer jaw will be connected to the casing and then the extraction will start
using the crane.

 Care must be taken not to exert too much pull prior to the loosening of the casing.

 During the continued extraction a sufficient quantity and head of concrete shall be maintained to
balance the external pressure so that the annular space vacated by the removal of the casing is
filled with the concrete.

 Careful visual inspection is carried out to ensure that the casing is extracted in the vertical position.

9. Health, Safety & Environmental


 The approved risk assessment for the project shall be explained to all personnel involved prior to
start of the job and shall be attached to this method statement once approved. The approved risk
assessment shall be used for conducting daily Start card Meeting as well.

 A spill kit and fire extinguisher shall be provided.

 Flagman & banks man shall be assigned for vehicular movement within the site.

 Two Tag lines will be provided with all loads while lifting/shifting with crane.

 Adequate personnel protective equipment’s shall be used by all employees at work.

 In addition to their safety induction received on their arrival on site, all workers will have a toolbox
meeting and be briefed about the risks of their specific work task, prior to start of works. A relevant
risk assessment is attached.

 All personnel must require wearing basic personal protective equipment (PPE) and those exposed to
vehicular traffic shall always be provided with a warning vest marked with or made of reflectorized
or high visibility material as an additional safeguard.

 Workers are still required to wear hard hats.

 Starting instructions will be given by the HSE officer before the start of each activity to explain the
methodology of work and to communicate safe working procedures to the operatives. These talks
are structured in a way to highlight the major risks involved in the activity and the various control
measures required to minimize the risk. It is delivered in a manner such that the key points will be
remembered by the operative receiving it.

 Weekly toolbox talks will be held for each crew, on group of employees, regarding more general
topics of the project HSE Policy, for example: lesson learned near miss report, implementation of
the requirements and message from the management, an Engineers, and HSE personnel.

 The area in which workers are exposed to danger shall provide safeguards, including warning signs,
barricades, and temporary fences as required for the protection of the public and site personnel
during demolition and removal operations. The safeguards are to be maintained until the
demolition and removal operations are complete.

 Operations in a manner that minimizes the spread of flying particles and dust. Rubbish and debris
shall be sprinkled with water to keep dust to a minimum. Also, to carry out regular housekeeping to
maintain a clean and safe working place for the workers.

10. Environmental
 All personnel should follow the health requirements and maintain a good housekeeping on site.

 All equipment and materials used on site will be correctly stored. Oil, fuel, sewage spillage from
motorized equipment will be avoided by placing adequate catch/retention basin/dip tray & spill kit.

 Dust control using ground water from the nearest extraction point.

11. House Keeping of materials


 Unused equipment shall be removed regularly from the work site. Any potential hazards not
identified in this assessment shall be noted and raised during tool‐box talks prior to work
commencing and controls implemented. Work area shall keep clean and tidy to prevent slips and
trips.
