Fuel Transfer Float Shut-Off Valve Failures Category A220-MISP-28-001/20 and Continued Airworthiness

Stage SB target
Background Root cause Sol evaluation Sol selection
April 2022

Strategy FOC SB. On attrition

Intermittent fuel imbalance reported on all aircraft where the Transfer Float Recommended with compliance time for ETOPS aircraft

Shut-Off Valve was replaced. Supplier Parker

In all cases the imbalance caution message was triggered during climb or early
cruise while still having fuel in the center tank.

Since Apr-21 FMM

Update since last FMM
• Slippage in planning due to qualification test failure

Mitigation
• Aircraft may be dispatched under MMEL (cat C) except for ETOPS
operation, center tank must be empty

Terminating
• New Fuel Transfer Float Shut-off Valve P/N 2130130-102 to introduce a new
Teflon Seal and heavier float
• Service Bulletin to remove the old valve and replace with the improved one
• Old valves will be discarded and replaced with new valves

SB release planned for April 2022

Fuel imbalance caution messages reported in service.
• Fuel feed tube flanges deterioration downstream of the feed ejector Supplier Parker, Spirit

• Ruptured fuel tubes (initial finding)

• Feed ejectors flange wear New Configuration
Transport Canada AD CF-2019-19 mandated initial inspection every 1800FH

Since Apr-21 FMM

Update since last FMM
• Sampling inspection performed on 6 a/c post interim fix SBs BD500-282004 &
Added support
BD500-282005, inspection revealed flange wear. SB BD500-282006

Terminating Action
• Upgraded ejector pump with a stainless steel outlet and improved end fitting
• Flexible motive flow line upstream of the ejector pump
• Flexible fuel line downstream of the ejector pump
• A redesigned T-fitting in line with the new design

New inspection interval under review with TCCA

Issue Stage Root cause

Strategy Not determined yet, depending on the solution concept

Customers have reported FUEL EJECTOR FAIL CAS Supplier Parker

messages caused by failed feed ejector check valve.
Wear at the flapper holder causes the flappers to detach
therefore contaminating the fuel system. Contact wear at stop Wear under spring tab Wear or play at the flapper
and flapper retaining pin

Root cause
Root cause just completed with following outcomes:
Several design features of the existing check valve present
vulnerabilities to very severe pressure fluctuation and vibration
associated with the A220 engine feed line environment

Mitigation / Solution
Mitigation
• Until a repeat inspection interval is determined, Airbus Canada recommend to perform an inspection of the affected check
valve simultaneously with SB for fuel feed lines. Inspection step will be included in next revision of SB BD500-282006
Termination Action
• Under review

Root cause analysis just completed. Inspection recommended.

Strategy Inspect per SB, replacement part FOC

Pylon fuel motive flow flexible hose was found twisted in its shroud on MSN Supplier Spirit
55093.
The twist in the hose caused a pressure drop in the motive flow and had the
effect of degrading the RH fuel transfer and caused an imbalance during the
first test flight.

Since Apr-21 FMM

Update since last FMM
• All titeflex hose inspection per SB BD500-282011 to be performed within 4
months of TCCA AD CF-2021-09 released March 2021 (75% completed to
date).
• Sampling ongoing on previous hose configuration manufactured by EATON
per SB BD500-282016 to be accomplished by Dec-2021
Mitigation
• Installation procedure revised at FAL and in the AMP to eliminate this
condition
• Inspection ongoing
Termination
• Removal of flexible hose assembly to inspect for twist in the hose
• Damaged hose will need to be discarded

Redesign effort ongoing. Schedule to be defined
