What`s New

In this module, you’re going to study on how to solve word problems. A

problem like:

The width of a rectangle is 3 feet less than its length. The

perimeter of the rectangle is 110 feet. Find its dimensions.
Questions:

1. What are the given facts in the problem?

2. What is asked in the given problem?
3. What is the number sentence of the given problem?

Page 6 of 18
What Is It

What is a word problem?

A word problem is a math problem written out as a short story or

scenario. Basically, it describes a realistic problem and asks you to imagine
how you would solve it using math. Word problems aren’t just on school
tests. You solve word problems every day in your work or even while you’re
just out and about.

To solve geometric word problems, you will need to memorize some

geometric formulas for at least the basic shapes (circles, squares, right
triangles, etc). Usually, you will figure out from the word problem which
formula to be use, and sometimes, you will need more than one formula for
one exercise.

Here are some of the formulas that can be used.

Polygon Area Formula Perimeter Formula

Triangle A =½ b h P = a +b +c
where a, b and c are sides of a
where b=base, h=height
triangle.

A=lw P = 2l + 2w
where l=length, w=width
Rectangle where l=length, w=width
A = s2 P = 4s
where s= side
Square where s= side
A=bh P=a+b+c+d
where a, b, c and d are sides of a
Parallelogra where b=base, h=height
parallelogram
m
A = ½ h ( b1 +b2) P=a+b+c+d
where h=height, b1 and b2 where a, b, c and d are sides of a
Trapezoid
are parallel sides trapezoid

You can solve any word problem by following these five steps:
Step 1: Read through the problem carefully and figure out what it's
all about and what are the given.
Step 2: Represent unknown numbers with variables.
Step 3: Translate the rest of the problem into a mathematical
expression.
Step 4: Solve the problem.
Step 5: Check your work.

Study and analyze the following examples carefully.

Page 8 of 18
Example 1:

The perimeter of a rectangular lawn is 26 m. If the length of the lawn is 5m,

what is the width of the lawn?

5m

Step1: You were asked to find the width of the rectangular park given
that the Perimeter is 26m and the length is 5m.

Step 2: Let W be the width of the rectangular park

Let L be the length of the rectangular park

Step 3: To solve for the width of the rectangular park, we use the
formula
P = 2L + 2W.

Step 4: Solution:

P = 2L + 2W ( substitute P by 26 and L by 5 )
26 = 2(5) + 2W ( multiply 2 and 5 )
26 = 10 + 2W
26+(-10) = 10+(-10) +2W ( add both sides by -10 )
26 = 2W ( since 2 is the coefficient of W,
(½ )(16) = (½)( 2W) multiply both sides by ½ which
is the reciprocal of 2 to obtain
the value of W)
8=W

Step 5: In checking, use the formula P = 2L +2W. Substitute the value of

W and L to the formula. So, we have
26 = 2(5) + 2(8)
26 = 10 + 16
26 = 26

The result in step 5 is equal. Therefore, the width of the

rectangular lawn is 8 meters.

Page 9 of 18
Example 2:
The area of a triangular cloth is 4800cm2. If the base of the cloth is 120cm,
what is the height of the cloth?

Step1: You were asked to find the height of the cloth given that the
Area is 4800 cm2 and the base of the cloth is 120cm.

Step 2: Let h be the height of the cloth

Let b be the base of the cloth

Step 3: To find the height of a triangular cloth, we use the formula

A= ½ b h.
Step 4: Solution:

A=½bh (substitute the given values

to the formula)
4800cm2 = ½ (120cm)(h) (multiply ½ and 120 cm)
4800cm2 = (60cm)(h)
2
4800 cm 60 cm
= (h) ( divide both sides by 60 cm)
60 cm 60 cm

80cm = h

Step 5: In checking, use A= ½ b h

4800 = ½ (120)(80)
4800 = (60)(80)
4800 = 4800

The result in step 5 is equal. Therefore, the height of a triangular cloth is

80cm.

Page 10 of 18
Example 3:

What is the sum of the interior angles of a pentagon?

Solution:

To find the sum of the interior angles of a polygon, we use the

formula sum of the interior angles of a polygon = (180°) (n -
2) where n is the number of sides.

The value of n is 5 since the given polygon in the problem is a

pentagon.

Using the formula,

Sum of the interior angles of a pentagon = (180°)(n - 2) (substitute n by 5)

= (180°)(5 - 2)
= (180°)(3)
= 540°
The sum of the interior angles of a pentagon is 540°.

Page 11 of 18
Example 4: How many sides does a polygon have if the sum of its interior
angles is 900°?

Solution:
To find the number of sides of a polygon, we use the formula
(180°) (n - 2) where n is the number of sides. So we have now,
Sum of the interior angles of a polygon = (180°) (n - 2)
900 = (180°) (n - 2) (multiply both
sides by 1/180)
1 1
900°( 180° ) = (180°) (n - 2) ( 180° )
5 = n-2 (add both sides by 2 to
eliminate -2)
5 +2 = n + (-2 +2)
7=n
The number of sides of a polygon is 7.

Example 5: An interior angle of a regular polygon measures 60°. How many

sides does the polygon have?

Solution:

To find the measure of each interior angle of a regular polygon, we use

(180) ( n−2 )
the formula interior angle of a regular polygon = where n
n
is the number of sides.

(180) ( n−2 )
60 = (multiply both sides by n)
n
60n = (180) (n-2) (multiply 180 to each term in the
quantity)
60n = 180n - 360 (add both sides by 360)
60n+ 360 = 180n + (-360 +360)
60n +360 = 180n (add both sides by -60n)
60n + -60n +360 = 180n + -60n (combine like terms)
360 = 120n (divide both sides by 120)
3 =n
