One day, an outbreak of Dengue
happens to their community. Her mother
wants her to stay at home for a while since
some of her classmates have Dengue
already, but Leni insists on going to
school.
1. Her condition worsened and her
parents decided to admit her to the
hospital. The doctor diagnosed that
she is suffering from Dengue, and she
needs to be treated as soon as
possible.
2. One week later, she develops rashes,
is vomiting and nauseous, having a
fever and body pain.
3. Leni is already fine, and she can go
back to school. The Dengue break-
out in their community has already
ended.
4. In the school, Leni is playing at the
park where drums of water are
scattered, and mosquitos are
everywhere. She noticed that she was
bitten by a mosquito. She is not
bothered since she doesn’t feel ill but
has a little fever.
5. After all the laboratory tests and
medication, Leni is feeling better but
not totally healed. She still needs to No, ma’am!

Based on our activity, what do you think Infections ma’am?
is our topic for today? How does the disease go to our body?

Yes, very good! Our topic for today is the

5 stages of infection. We will discuss each
stage for you to understand it more. Let us
first define what infection is.

Infection occurs when harmful

microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses,
fungi, or parasites invade the body and
multiply, leading to a disruption of normal
bodily functions. These microorganisms
can enter the body through various means,
including inhalation, ingestion, or through
openings in the skin. Depending on the
type of microorganism involved and the
site of infection, symptoms can vary
widely, ranging from mild discomfort to
severe illness. Infections can affect any
part of the body and may require medical
intervention, such as antibiotics or
antiviral medications, to treat effectively.

Okay. Based on the first sequence of the The bacteria enter the body, and the
story of Leni, what do you think happens person might feel some symptoms.
in the first stage of infection?

This is what we called the

INCUBATION STAGE. It is the time
between the exposure of the pathogen and
appearance of symptoms. The signs and
symptoms may appear toward the end of
the incubation period.

From the next event that happened to

Leni, what do you think is the second The signs and symptoms are already

That’s right!

It is when the signs and symptoms of a

disease start to appear. During this stage,
the body reacts to the presence of
pathogen. Although showing signs and
symptoms, the person may still function
normally despite the feeling of
discomfort. The stage is the
PRODROMAL STAGE.
The disease has become worse.
Next thing that happened to Leni talks
about the 3rd stage of infection. What do
you think happens in the 3rd stage?

Yes.

It is called the ACUTE STAGE. It is a

period when the disease is at its peak and

Leni talks about what stage of infection?

Correct!

The 4th stage is the DECLINING

STAGE. The period when symptoms start
to subside and the severity of the disease
declines. The infection is still present but
is now reduced. The infection is already gone.

On the last stage, Leni is already better.

What do you think this means?

Excellent!

It is the CONVALESCENT STAGE.

The stage in which the symptoms of the
disease begin to fade, and the patient
recovers his or her health and strength. So that we can understand what is
happening to ourselves or other people.
Since you already know the stages of
infection. Why do you think we need to
learn this?

Yes, in addition, it is important to know

the different stages of infection because
this gives a clear understanding of the
