analyze some words that we will encounter
during the discussion.
Directions: Choose a word in box A that
will match the definition in box B.

1. It construct or arrange according to plan.

Answer: Structure

transition between the difficult ideas in
your paper clearly.

What are the different sources of
information? Who have an idea? Ma’am books.

sources of information. The information

stated or written in those books,
newspapers and etc. are called informative
text. For today’s lesson we will learn about
the structures of an informative text. Can
you read the definition. Informative text is nonfiction writing,
written with the intention of informing the
reader about a specific topic.
Thank you, an informative text contains
facts and true information. It is typically
found in magazines, science or history
books, autobiographies and instruction
manuals.

Writing a text is like constructing a

building. Both need to be planned well and
need to be arranged to be excellently made.

Structure is from the Latin word

“structura” which means “ a fitting
together”.
So understanding text structures can
definitely improve your ability to
comprehend what you are reading.

Choosing your text structure depends on

your topic. There are topics that suited for
description, there are some topics that are
best explain through compare and contrast
and there are topics that should be explain
through a step by step procedure.
Now here are the structures that I’m
talking about. Starting with Cause and
Effect, kindly read the definition. Cause and Effect can include several
reasons why an event occurred or several
effects that resulted from a cause.
Thank you, Cause explains why something
happened and effect is the result of what
happened. There are several signal words
that will help you identify a text as using
the cause and effect text structure.
These are, will you please read all of you. Signals Words:

Those are the signal words that will help
you identify the cause and effect text.
We also have here the graphic organizer
that we can associate to show the cause and
effect in the text. This is what do we call a

T-Chart.

But before that lets proceed first to the

example of text using cause and effect
structure, kindly read.
Example:
Miguel isn’t allowed to eat shrimp because
he is allergic to sea foods. The shrimps and
other seafoods can make him very itchy
and can even result in ear infections.
What signal words are used here in the
example?
Ma’am we used the signal word, because.
That’s correct! What else?
Ma’am we used the signal word, result.
Very good, here in the example we used
the signal words because and result.
Lets try to use the graphic organizer to
show the cause and effect.

Can you identify the cause in the given

example?
Excellent! So what are the effects?

Is there any question about the cause and

effect text?

Next we have the Problem and solution.

Please read the definition. Problem and solution identifies a
problem, provides possible solutions with
possible results, and finally the actual
solution selected.
Presents a problem and explains how it
solved. In problem and solution text you
should look for a problem that being
described followed by on or more solution.
The signal words that you will see as clues
are , all of you kindly read. Signal Words:
issue perhaps
problem possible
conflict resolved
difficulty solution
We have here the graphic organizer t-chart
to show the problem and solution in the
text.

Now, kindly read the example. In Northern areas, the weather is too cold
to grow crops all year long. But some
farmers have found a way to grow food all
year. A greenhouse is a special building
that stays warm in the winter. Crops like
lettuce and cabbage can grow well in the
greenhouse, even when the weather is
cold!
Ma’am the problem of the farmers is the

That’s correct their solution is building a

green house.
I’m glad that you are able to identify the
problem and the solution of the farmers
from the text.

Those are the signal words for compare

and contrast text. A while ago we have the
graphic organizer, T-Chart for cause and
effect, we can also use T-Chart in
comparing of two or more things and aside
from that we can also use the Venn
Diagram.

We have here an example, please read. Example:

Mars is only about one-half the diameter of
Earth, but both planets have roughly the
same amount of dry land surface area. This
is because over two thirds of the Earth's
surface is covered by oceans, whereas the
present surface of Mars has no liquid
water.
Which signal words will help the readers to
see the similarities and differences of the
example? Will you please give one. Ma’am we used the signal words but and
both.
Very good! What else? Ma’am we used signal word same.
Yes! Signal word same is used, and lastly
we have the signal word? Ma’am whereas.

That’s great! The signal words used in the

example are but, both, same and whereas.
Lets try to use the graphic organizer Venn
Diagram to show the similarities and
differences of the text.

What are the things being compared? Ma’am the things that being compared are
Mars and Earth.
What are their similarities?

The next is the text structure sequence.

Will you please read the definition.
Sequence is a text that provides steps in a
procedure or events in chronological order.
This type of text describes events in order
which they happen, it is also called
chronological order.

There are many signal words and phrases

that are like clues to help you identify the
text structure sequence. All of you kindly
read those signal words.
Signal Words:
first before now
second after soon
next finally then
We have here the graphic organizer finally preceding earlier
timeline.

Let’s look at this text. Will you please read

the example.
Example:

Correct! Signal words then, next and
finally are used in the given example.

Let’s proceed to the next text structure, the

description. Will you please read.
Description describes a particular topic.
Description paragraphs are written to put a
picture in a reader’s mind, to help you
picture or get to know a person, a place, a
thing or an idea.
There are certain signal words that you can
look for to help you identify the text
structure as description text. All of you
please read. Signal Words:

for instance such as
For this description we will use the graphic most important to illustrate
organizer concept map.

Here’s is an example of a description text.

Kindly read the example.
Example:
Mars is the 4th planet from the sun. It is a
terrestrial planet which means that it has a
hard rocky surface that you could walk on.
Mars' surface is dry and much of it is
covered with a reddish dust and rocks.
When viewed from Earth, Mars appears to
be the color red.
What is this paragraph describing? Ma’am the paragraph is describing about
Mars.
So, how the planet Mars being described? Ma’am, Mars is described as a hard rocky
surface.
Yes! So those are the words that used to
describe the planet Mars.

Is there any questions before we begin our

activity?

E. APPLICATION
None Ma’am.
Divide the class into three.
Directions: Identify the structure of
each paragraph if cause and effect,
compare and contrast, description, problem
and solution, or sequence. And use the
graphic organizers, T-Chart, Concept Map,
Venn Diagram and etc. that associate to the
structure of the informative text to present
your answers.

Group 1: Beach is a perfect place. The air

is hot, but the water is cool and fresh.
Many people are enjoy swimming and
surfing in the ocean. The sand is soft and
white. The air smells salty from the sea
many people feel relaxed and peaceful.
When they want to relax in summer, they
go to the beach.

Group 2: The beach and the woods are

both popular places to relax. The type of
activities that each location offers are an
important point to consider. At the beach
one can enjoy the water by swimming,
surfing, or even building a sand castle with
a moat that will fill with water. When one
is in the woods, one may be able to go
fishing or swimming in a nearby lake, or
one may not be near water at all.

Group 3: Smoking is one of the oldest

phenomenon in the world. One of the
negative effect of smoking is that it can
cause, serious health problems. Smoking
can increase the chance of getting lung
cancer, as well as cancer of the mouth,
throat, bladder, pancreas and kidneys.
Heart disease and ulcers are also related to
smoking.
I will give you 10 minutes to answer this
activity.

their relatives, like caimans and the

crocodalians are reptiles with long snouts,
long tails, four short legs, tough skin and
sharp teeth. There are some differences,
however. Gavials have the longest snout
and most teeth. Some people say that both
alligators and crocodiles differ in the shape
of their snouts and the positioning of the
teeth. On the other hand, zookeepers say
that crocodiles move faster than alligators
and have nastier disposition.
